Calgary as a winter getaway: Three things to do on your travels

TPA's newly announced Canadian route is an exciting destination for snowy sports, alpine scenery and other cold-weather fun.

As summer comes to an end, it’s the perfect time to start planning your winter escapade. Calgary is the ideal place for your next trip if you’re looking to embrace the cold and embark on thrilling outdoor adventures.

With WestJet launching nonstop service between TPA and Calgary on December 23, we’ve gathered our top three attractions to help you plan your winter getaway.

1 .       Ice skating on the frozen lakes

Put on your skates and embrace the winter season. With numerous frozen lakes and outdoor rinks, Calgary is the perfect place to go ice skating. One of the most popular outdoor rinks is in Bowness Park’s lagoon, where visitors can enjoy free ice skating during the winter. Another beautiful spot is the Olympic Plaza skating rink. Conveniently located in downtown Calgary, this plaza is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and is one of the few refrigerated outdoor rinks in the city.

2.       Skiing and snowboarding on the slopes

With the Rocky Mountains a mere hour away, visitors can hit the slopes for some skiing and snowboarding. Places like Banff, Kananaskis Country and Canmore have thrilling terrain and stunning alpine scenery. Plus, they’re only a short drive away from the city. Whether you are a seasoned skier/snowboarder or just looking for an adrenaline rush, Calgary has plenty of ski resorts for all levels, ages and adventurers.

3.       Exploring the Devonian Gardens

Take a break from the winter chill and visit the indoor Devonian Gardens. Located in the heart of Calgary, these botanical gardens include over 500 trees and 50 types of plants that make up 2.5 acres of foliage. On top of the beautiful collection of plants and flowers, the Devonian Gardens also offer fountains, fish ponds and a playground for visitors to explore.
