Wonder Woman 3 was technically confirmed in December 2020, but there's been a lot of change at DC since then.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have officially taken charge of DC Studios, and a new DC Universe is coming — starting with Creature Commandos in 2024 and Superman: Legacy opening the movie slate in July 2025.

So, where exactly does that leave Wonder Woman 3 and the return of Gal Gadot's Diana Prince? Well, it's complicated.

Let's break it down.

Has Wonder Woman 3 been cancelled?

As of September 2023, it appears as though Wonder Woman 3 has been cancelled — despite what Gal Gadot has been saying.

In December 2022, it was reported that the threequel wasn't part of the plans for the new DC Universe, but then Gunn debunked those reports in early January 2023. Despite this, Wonder Woman 3 wasn't among the first projects announced for the new DC slate in late January 2023.

That was the last we heard until August 2023, when Gadot revealed that she was going to develop a third movie with Gunn and Safran. But shortly after that, it was again reported that a third Wonder Woman movie wasn't in the current plans for DC.

We are definitely getting a Wonder Woman TV series called Paradise Lost, but since it's a prequel, Gadot won't be a part of it.

So, right now, we might have seen the last of Diana Prince in the DC Universe.

Wonder Woman 3 potential release date: When could Wonder Woman 3 be released?

Unsurprisingly, Wonder Woman 3 doesn't have a release date yet, as we don't even know if it will happen.

Even if the threequel is confirmed, we'll be waiting a while. As mentioned above, Superman: Legacy is the first movie of the new DC Universe, and it comes out on July 11, 2025 (assuming no delays).

So, Wonder Woman 3 wouldn't arrive until after that, meaning we're probably looking at 2026 and beyond — again, if it even happens.

Wonder Woman 3 cast: Who's coming back for Wonder Woman 3?

Without an official confirmation, we don't have any confirmed cast for Wonder Woman 3, but we're safe to assume Gal Gadot would be back as Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, if it does happen.

This year, Gadot has reprised the role for cameos in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash. She wasn't in Blue Beetle, but there's a chance she might have a cameo in Aquaman 2 (although it seems unlikely).

Though Chris Pine as Steve Trevor had a wonderful part to play in Wonder Woman 1984, it's unlikely — we think — he'd return for a third film, and Pine seems to think so too.

"I think Steve's done," Pine told Entertainment Tonight. "I think Steve's done his bit."

As for anyone else from Wonder Woman 1984, never say never. Given that Steve returned from the dead, there's nothing to say we won't get a flashback or a memory in which Pedro Pascal or Kristen Wiig appear, but it seems unlikely.

In the sequel, we did go back to Themyscira, so there's always a chance we could return (again) and see Robin Wright as Antiope, Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta and even Lilly Aspell as a young Diana.

Beyond that, we just don't know... yet.

Wonder Woman 3 plot: What will Wonder Woman 3 be about?

With Wonder Woman 1984, Patty Jenkins moved the characters closer to the present day. When the next movie will be set, however, is mostly a mystery, especially if the DC Universe gets a soft reboot.

Jenkins — who might not even be back to direct the third movie if it goes ahead — did have a story in mind before the release of Wonder Woman 1984 about where the series can go, but that might have changed now.

Speaking to CinemaBlend, Jenkins said: "I actually came up with a story, and Geoff Johns [Wonder Woman 1984's screenwriter] and I beat out an entire story for Wonder Woman 3 that we were super fired up about.

"But I've never felt this way before as much as I do now. I don't think I'm doing it next, and so I have to wait and see where we are in the world [when it comes to making the movie].

"I still love the story that we came up with. I'm sure that parts of it would come over to it. But I'm trying to say, 'Don't decide.' Don't fall in love with anything. See 'What would Wonder Woman do now?' What are you craving Wonder Woman to do in this world?"

Wonder Woman 1984 didn't give much away as regards the third movie, even with the post-credits scene that brought back the OG Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter. She was playing Asteria, not Diana Prince, but she could play a role in the third movie.

Wonder Woman 3 trailer: Any Wonder Woman 3 footage yet?

It won't be surprising to know there isn't any footage yet. It'll be a while before we see anything from the third movie at all. Sorry, folks!
