Rooney Mara – Your New Favorite Vegan Celebrity Designer
Celebrity lifestyle is nothing new for Rooney Mara, she has been in the public eye since her breakthrough Golden Globe nominated lead role in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in 2011.
Since then the forward thinking Mara has founded the charitable Faces of Kibera providing housing, food, and medical care in Kenyan slums, all the while staying busy acting in multiple films each year including the forth coming Mary Magdalene expected to be released in the first half of 2018.
Becoming Vegan
Becoming a vegan seven years ago, Mara found it troubling how difficult it was to access vegan clothing and accessories so she set out to launch her own vegan brand with her friend Sara Schloat, and Hiraeth was born. The line features elegant women’s clothing and accessories with a sincere and environmentally conscious message.
Mara told Vogue about her first mission to design vegan combat boots, “Finding a pair of really nice vegan combat boots is sort of impossible—the kind you can dress up, but also run around town in. That was my first order of business.”
Mara’s Message
Mara’s message isn’t just for better treatment of animals but for treatment of humans too. Her mission statement to make something you can wear forever is inspired by the excessive waste in our world and what actions and perspectives are needed to change the problem. Not to mention the line is all made in Los Angeles, Mara made it a point to meet every person working on the products telling Vogue, “That was really important to me—to know where everything comes from, and that it’s all coming from a place of integrity.”
The few photos that have been released of the Hiraeth line show a distinct style and one pointedness, not unlike Mara’s social stance.
The lines are soft and strong, with a calm seriousness that is not easily swayed. The neutral colors add to the serious nature, creating a visual conversation, one that is as urgent and important as environmental consciousness and humane treatment for all of the earth’s creatures.
