4<strong>Winter</strong> <strong>2012</strong>-<strong>13</strong>Sports CenterBy: Pete Sanfilippo IV, Athletic DirectorI want to thank all the athletes andcoaches for their hard work and dedicationduring the fall sports season.NEWSLETTER FOR ALUMNI AND MEMBERS OF THE OAKWOOD FRIENDS COMMUNITYThe Boys’ Varsity Soccer team was coachedby Simon Culley and Will Bussert, andthe team was led by senior captains KwabenaArthur, Henry Harms (WNEPS-SA All-star) and Hungsun (Mickey) An(WNEPSSA All-star and team MVP). Ourbest performances came against strongersides. The team ended with a regularseason record of 5-3-2 and went 6-4-2overall. Tehron Durr ’15 was awardedthe Coach’s Award and also achieved perfectattendance. Hyungsun (Mickey)An ’<strong>13</strong> earned the coach’s MVP award.<strong>2012</strong> Cross Country TeamTristan Fah ’14The Boys’ JV Soccer team was coachedby David Kehlenbeck and Mauro Parra,and the team had an up and down seasonfinishing with a record of 1-8-2. The BoysJV captains, Sebastian Wayne '<strong>13</strong>, theCoaches Award recipient, and TJ Sayah'<strong>13</strong> who was the Team MVP recipient, ledthe team all season long, setting positiveexamples during practice and games alike.Jingchen (Frank) Feng ’16 earned theMost Improved Player award. The youngerplayers benefitted from their leadership,as well as from the experience of Alex Rodriguez'<strong>13</strong>, and every player's skills andconfidence grew throughout the season.The Girls’ Varsity Soccer team was coachedby Lauren Dorsa and Sasha Skulsky, andthis season the girls’ team was made upof almost completely of new players. Thegirls came with an excited attitude and thedetermination to do well. The team qualifiedfor the quarterfinals against Marvelwood,but after a competitive game, theylost 2-4. Throughout the season the teamof mostly freshman and new players developedskills and knowledge of soccer.Victoria Jackson ’15 and Sage Altamirano’16 were invited to attend the WesternNew England All Star game. CaptainsNayana Pratt ’15 and Marla Ogden ’14were named to the All-Conference SecondTeam and Victoria Jackson was namedto the All-Conference First Team. FreshmanSumayah Harrell's speed became aforce as forward and a combined effort ingoal between Sage Altamirano, Iulia Ionescu’14, and Yiting (Iris) Lu ’14 heldthe team together. Victoria Jackson wasthe team MVP, Iulia Ionesco was awardedthe Coach’s Award, and Sumayah Harrellwas awarded the Most Improved Award.The Middle <strong>School</strong> Soccer team wascoached by Caitlyn Hopkins. The teamended their season with a record of 0-7.Even though it was a bit of a tough seasonall the players were excited to playeach game and always gave 100%. Theyalways had a positive attitude and displayedgreat sportsmanship on and off thefield. Our four goals were scored by ElliotGrant ’12 (1 goal), Jade Walker ’17(1 goal) and Dumitru Mahoney ’17 (2goals). All three earned Coach’s Awards.The Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team wascoached by Gary Zwick. Gary notes theywere spirited in so many ways, leadingto laughter every practice, bus ride,and game, and a truly enjoyable group.Ally Cerniglia ’15, Rui (Skyler) Ma’<strong>13</strong>, and Rachel Plotkin ’<strong>13</strong> eachearned a Coach’s Award. The team wasa pleasure to coach and looking backon the season it is difficult not to smile.The Girls’ JV Volleyball team was coachedby Jessica Contino. She reports thatworking with so many new students wasa great experience and the girls workedhard every practice and always remainedpositive. They also developed solid friendshipson and off the court. She looks forwardto welcoming more girls to the teamnext fall and making each season betterthan the last. Congratulations girls on agood season! Jinghan (Jessica) Wang’15 was awarded the Most Valuable Playeraward. Siyi Chen ’14 earned the MostImproved Award, and Alexandra Stephens’15 received the Coach’s Award.Boys’ Cross Country started the seasonwith its best finish (5th of 12) in recentyears at the <strong>Oakwood</strong> <strong>Friends</strong> Invitational.With the entire school cheering themat the League Championship at <strong>Oakwood</strong>,all <strong>13</strong> boys and 2 girls ran personal bests.The boys’ team tied the top-ranked team inthe league, but unfortunately lost the tiebreaker.Even so, the team was buoyed byclosing a sizeable gap to earn the tie. EarningAll-Star status were Steven Kaufman’14, River Hoffman ’14, and freshmanDan Barletta ’16. At the League Championshipmeet, Steven finished 4th, River 6th,and Dan 8th. Earning Honorable Mentionwere Jiajun (Tony) Zou ’15 in 12th placeand Alan Schlessman ’14. Kate Wilkinson’15 and Sarah Keaveney ’14 broughtnotice to Girls’ Cross Country by earningindividual medals at multiple invitationalmeets even though the team was too smallto score. At the League Championship,Kate finished 4th and Sarah finished 6th.Kate also earned All-Star status, and Sarahearned Honorable Mention for the league.For their performances over the season,River and Steven both earned MVP awardsand Kate earned the Most Improved Runneraward. Other highlights of the seasonwere the annual Workout and Make-Your-Own-Pizza at Katie Rose’s house, andthe building of a Shoe Tree from studentand faculty donations of worn-out shoeshung from a tree in the old faculty gardens.This display was intended to distractand slow down the other teams, but theteam’s efforts overshadowed that need.Race to RebuildSaturday, May 18th
