Cristóbal Balenciaga's couture legacy in 10 vintage photos
On the anniversary of his death, we're taking a look back over some of his most iconic moments and creations in 10 vintage photographs.
With his impeccable mastery of volumes, his play on shoulders and dimensions, Cristóbal Balenciaga is one of the greatest couturiers of the 20th century. Born in a Spanish village called Getaria, the designer practiced his skills with a tailor in Madrid before opening his own workshop in San Sebastian. He gradually became familiar with the sophisticated designs from Paris, which he discovered during his travels, and especially when he moved there in 1937, when Spain was plunged into civil war. There he explored and cultivated his passion for clothing by opening his own house. A century after its creation, Balenciaga continues to dominate the fashion scene.
As a true arbiter of Parisian elegance, Cristóbal Balenciaga, whose favorite color was black, presented popular and emblematic creations. From flamenco dresses, to free silhouettes like his mythical Sack dress, to his balloon jackets, all of them have stood the test of time. Each of his outfits was considered a work of art by Cristóbal Balenciaga himself, and proved to be an expression of the woman's body. Take a look back at the moments that shaped the legacy of the famous designer.
