The real question is, “why not do Emily in Paris for the cover of Vogue France?” This is the pitch that Winta, our casting director, put up for discussion during an editorial meeting last January. Half-amused, half-perplexed expressions were cast around the table. The character of Emily Cooper, who had newly arrived from Chicago to work in a French luxury marketing agency in Paris, was divisive. The series, a pure byproduct of the American imagination, succeeded in fascinating and irritating audiences to no end. But Lily Collins, who plays the role of Emily, knows how to get the viewers hooked. The acting and the storyline are not complicated, the characters are extremely well-developed, and yet there is a spicy je-ne-sais-quoi that makes the whole thing irresistible. So yes, Vogue and its editorial team offered Emily Cooper her first cover. Because if there is one woman who debunks the clichés of the Parisian woman, it's her. With her Emily in Paris character, Emily Cooper, Collins delivers an alluring smile, while maintaining her signature awkwardness and her anything-but-minimalist wardrobe. What we also love about Emily is her delightful way of reinventing Paris. An icon of new French joy, she is playful, assertive, colorful, and freed from conventions. While the essence of the Parisian woman cannot be truly articulated, one thing is clear. Lily Collins has what it takes to be a star. Happy Holidays!
