Cynthia Nixon married longtime girlfriend Christine Marinoni Sunday, almost exactly three years after announcing her engagement at a marriage equality rally.

"On May 27, 2012, Cynthia Nixon and her girlfriend, Christine Marinoni, were legally married in the state of New York," a spokesperson for Nixon told People magazine. "Nixon wore a custom dress by Carolina Herrera."

Nixon, whose credits include a long run as Miranda Hobbes on HBO's Sex and the City and a current Tony award nomination for her performance in Broadway's Wit, has been an increasingly outspoken advocate for same-sex marriage and LGBT rights since becoming engaged to Marinoni, an education activist, in May 2009.

"We have to do everything we can to open that door a little bit wider and escort same-sex marriage down the aisle," Nixon said at the 2009 rally before flashing her engagement ring to the crowd, which included Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former New York governor David Paterson.

"We're hoping to do it in New York. We're not going to wait forever, but we're hoping it's just around the corner," Nixon said two months later.

In February 2011, Marinoni gave birth to the couple's son, and same-sex marriage was legalized in New York in July of that year.

Nixon was criticised in January for remarking that for her, being gay was a choice.

"I understand that for many people it's not, but for me it's a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me," Nixon said.

Nixon has two children from a previous relationship with photographer Danny Mozes.
