Öpik to wed Cheeky Girl

This article is more than 16 years old

Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Öpik is engaged to his girlfriend, Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia, it has been announced.

Opik proposed to the novelty pop star in Rome, the couple said during an interview with Hello! magazine. The Montgomeryshire MP, 43, asked Irimia, 25, to marry him beside the Trevi fountain last week.

The couple said they plan to hold their wedding next year or possibly in 2010.

Irimia told the magazine she is now dreaming of a "lavish white wedding in a castle".

"When I said 'yes' he started to cry. Tears of joy poured out of his eyes. I couldn't cry, I was so happy that I just kept smiling and laughing," she said.

Öpik added: "We were euphoric afterwards, walking around the city and then sipping champagne and chatting away in our hotel suite until the early hours. I couldn't ask for things to go better than they did."

Öpik met the Transylvanian singer in 2006 on Five's All Star Talent Show. At the time he was engaged to ITV weather presenter Siân Lloyd, but they split up later the same year.

Lloyd is now married to millionaire businessman Johnathan Ashman. She has published an autobiography in which she was critical of Öpik's Westminster lifestyle.

Öpik says her comments have prompted him to consider legal action.

Irimia became famous after appearing on the talent contest show Popstars: The Rivals with her twin sister in 2002. The duo did not rich the finals of the competition, but had become a cult hit by then with their unique image and singing style.

In 2004, the twins hit the charts with The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum) and went on to have a string of other novelty pop hits.
