Audience Member An excellent film: The photography is classic. The setting is simple and forceful. The music is perfect. The acting is top drawer. Who cares if the script is simplistic. It doesn't matter, because all the other elements of a great film carry the day. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review victor o Interesting movie. Basically this qualifies an example of high-end European cinema. It's not bad but not great, but what it lacks in popularity is a complex and involving story-telling. A priest is summoned to an International Monetary Fund conference that becomes a mysterious death that becomes the centerpiece of the movie. Before the man died, he made a confession to the priest. Caught up between attempting to help find out the truth as well as following his duty in keeping the seal of confession, the priest is certainly in a tight spot. All the while various other characters from the politicians to other prominent guests are depicted here. It is interesting but I wouldn't want to watch again. I like the acting from the man who plays the priest as well as the Italian minister. I'm a big fan of Connie Nielsen and was happy to watch her in this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Outstanding photography and ambitious theme...but disappointing from economic/ philossophical/ human interest/ metaphorical or any which hat the viewer tries on to appreciate. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A slow moving think piece. While anti-capitalist themes are fairly common in films abroad, here in the US, it's something of a rarity. Especially, given the unholy alliance between Christianity and the free market that is assumed in America, the Monk's POV was a refreshing take down of consumerism Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty pictures. Great music. Tons of philosophy and symbolism. I liked the ending... Scott Marks San Diego Reader Those expecting the brand of hefty satire found in And's last film, Long Live Liberty, will have to wait. Rated: 1/5 Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Godfrey Cheshire RogerEbert.com The film's strongest suit is its elegant photography and confident mounting, but these virtues do little to offset the script's pervasive weaknesses. Rated: 2/4 Jul 7, 2017 Full Review Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times And's film feels entirely manufactured, distancing itself from its audience and blunting its points in the process. Jul 6, 2017 Full Review Denise Pieniazek Puesta en Escena (AR) The Confessions is exquisite on a formal and aesthetic level, accompanying in perfect harmony the narrative that doses the information in an ingenious way, with touches of ironic humor in the midst of suspense... Rated: 9/10 Jan 12, 2024 Full Review Erica Peplin Vague Visages Sleek visuals and cryptic dialogue aren’t enough to save a film that’s essentially a truncated season of House of Cards. Dec 5, 2023 Full Review Aaron Pinkston Battleship Pretension By the end, the film itself becomes only philosophy and metaphor, the latter happening in a strangely mystical way that feels empty and confusing.
