With Women’s Day in sight (observed on 8th March), Celina Jaitley, former Bollywood actress, expressed on Instagram the utter disappointment she felt after posting a photo with her newborn twin sons. In the post she mentions that she was brutally judged, slut shamed, and trolled for posting a photo of her in a bikini, holding her twins.

She wrote in the caption, “This was the most trolled photograph of me with my one-month-old twin boys on the internet when it was first posted. While the bikini had a lot to do with the trolling I remember I was attacked for placing one of my love cakes ( Baby Winston) next to me and not holding him in my arms. I was called everything from being a witch to being a w#@re to being inconsiderate and whatnot.”

Although not all the mothers in the world are as famous and hence as discussed online as Jaitely,  the palpitations before posting about our pregnancy or our kids online are all too familiar. Ridicule and trolling is not a thing isolated to the uber-famous. All of us have experienced just how harsh, judgemental, and inconsiderate certain parts of society can be.

“I was judged, trolled, and called names for wearing a swimsuit (At a swimming pool by the way). No one once thought of showing any consideration. I was being shamed for being a human, for not losing my identity just because I became a mother, for my mothering skills which did not fit in with preconceived expectations,” she added.

While the onus of a safe space does not lie on those being judged unnecessarily, it is still important to consider the mental health impact of announcing your pregnancy or posting your kids online.
