The iconic fairytale Pinocchio tells the story of a man named Geppetto who loses his young son and creates a wooden puppet as a way of dealing with his grief.

Geppetto's pain did not go unnoticed for a spirit decides to help him by bringing the wooden puppet, named Pinocchio, to life.

The readers may well think they know what comes next—Pinocchio wants to become a real boy and he does so by following Geppetto's rules. However, del Toro's version of the story deviates at this point, particularly because it is set against the backdrop of the rise of fascism in Italy.

At a preview event for the film that Newsweek attended, del Toro reflected: "There is a reason why the movie has a possessory title, to me there is Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio, there's Walt Disney's Pinocchio, and there's Guillermo del Toro's spin on it.

"Because, to me, the interesting thing is can I make up a Pinocchio that celebrates disobedience, as opposed to celebrating obedience? Can I make a Pinocchio in which he doesn't have to turn into a real boy because he was obedient at the end?"

Del Toro's version of the story is animated and so a plethora of actors lend their voices to the characters, including newcomer Gregory Mann as Pinocchio and Carlo, Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket, and David Bradley as Geppetto.

Christoph Waltz voices the main villain of the piece, Count Volpe, while Cate Blanchett voices Volpe's monkey sidekick Spazzatura.

Although it was animated using handcrafted puppets, the actors helped provide their own facial expressions to help during the animation process.

Mann told Newsweek about voicing his character, sharing: "When I was in the recording studio, they had a camera just to film my face as well. I think that sometimes they related my facial expressions while I would say a line to what Pinocchio says. So sometimes, if his face and his eyes light up in a certain way, it's sort of what I was doing while I was in the booth recording."
