Here’s Where You’ve Seen Rob Morgan Before - Netflix Tudum
- Meet the star of ‘Don’t Look Up’ and ‘The Unforgivable.’Dec. 24, 2021
For the past few years, Rob Morgan has been everywhere — but you might not have noticed him. You can spot him on Stranger Things, working his beat as Officer Powell of the Hawkins Police Department, and as Councilman Sol Brown in the NBC series This Is Us. There he is, playing arms dealer Turk Barrett on Daredevil (and Luke Cage and Jessica Jones and Iron Fist and The Defenders and The Punisher — phew!). On film, he pops in key supporting roles in Just Mercy or The Last Black Man in San Francisco and scorches in a larger role in the Oscar-nominated Netflix drama Mudbound. Morgan is that most thrilling type of actor: the kind that fits perfectly into any setting or role you drop him into.
If you haven’t noticed Rob Morgan before, now is the time. This fall, he’s back on Netflix with not one but two new roles. Opposite Sandra Bullock in The Unforgivable, he’s the tough-love parole officer who’s clearly lived a hard-knocks life of his own. And in Don’t Look Up from Adam McKay, Morgan’s calm confidence balances out the triangle he shares with the sky-is-falling scientists played by Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio. Better hitch a ride on that Rob train now because he’s showing no sign of stopping anytime soon.
Both performances are perfect examples of what makes Morgan such an exciting screen presence: He’s a flawless utility player who elevates everything he comes into contact with. The sober drama of The Unforgivable comes to life whenever he’s on screen; his exchanges with Bullock have a crackling tension even when she’s giving him the silent treatment. And in Don’t Look Up, he slides perfectly into the jumpier energy of McKay’s story, grounding scenes every time they seem just about to escape Earth’s gravity. It’s no wonder The New York Times named him one of the best actors of the 21st century so far. There are few modern screen performers as captivating and consistent.
