Are you ready to really test your maths skills? You might consider yourself a bit of a pro when it comes to addition or multiplication, but how do you fare when it comes to working out number sequences? Recognising number patterns is a real skill that requires you to quickly identify the sequence's rule before you can identify the next number.

And now a new brain teaser has left people really scratching their heads trying to work out the pattern, which is apparently some sort of IQ test. Giving your brain a workout with a puzzle every day can help boost cognitive function, so why not give this one a go and see how good your maths skills really are?

The image below shows you the sequence you have to work out. It says that if 1 + 5 = 6, then 2 + 6 = 14, and 3 + 7 = 25. So what does 5 + 11 equal? Can you work it out? It might seem hard at first but there is a very simple solution to the puzzle.

Any ideas? Keep trying - you'll kick yourself when you see the solution! True brain whizzes should be able to work this puzzle out in a matter of seconds, so if you've already found the solution then you might just be a genius! If you need a little more help, however, we can offer you a hint.

In order to work this puzzle out, you need to know your times tables - and also use some simple addition. Take a good look at the numbers you've been given and try to find something that links them together. We won't give you any more hints than this, so take all the time you need to work it out, and then scroll down to see the answer!

Here's the solution: the pattern is (a x b)+a. That is, 1+5 = 1 x 5 + 1 = 6; 2+6 = 2 x 6 + 2 = 14; 3+7 = 3 x 7 + 3 = 24. And finally, 5+11 = 5 x 11 + 5 = 55+5=60. So simple when you know how to do it!

Did you manage to work it out? If you want to test your brain power with some more tricky puzzles, then why not give this maths question a go , which some people have claimed is "simple" but has left others completely stumped?
