Rooney Mara Is Pregnant With Her Second Child With Joaquin Phoenix

Congratulations are in order for Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix. The couple, who are already parents to a three-year-old son, River, are expecting their second child together — according to People. 

On Friday, Mara debuted her baby bump at the premiere of La Cocina during the 74th Berlinale International Film Festival while posing for photos on the red carpet. The actress chose to show off her growing stomach in a strapless black gown that featured a tight bandeau-style bodice that expanded into a flowing, floor-length skirt with a mini train. She accessorized minimally with just a delicate ring on her pinky finger, and finished off her look with a slicked-back bun, pink lipgloss, and her natural pregnancy glow.

Rooney and Joaquin welcomed their first child, a son named River after Phoenix's late brother, in August 2020. The pair initially met on the set of sci-fi drama Her in 2012, and quietly got engaged seven years later. 

The couple has kept quiet about both their relationship and roles as parents, but for her first Mother's Day, Rooney pulled a rare move and opened up about being a mom in a heartfelt letter written for Farm Sanctuary's Mother's Day campaign in 2021. "As a new mom, Mother's Day has taken on a special meaning this year," she wrote, adding: "Raising our baby, River, has opened my heart to a whole new life filled with hope and more determination than ever to create a kinder and more sustainable world."
