TELLY SAVALAS
The Golden Globe-winning actor signed this black and white photograph in black felt tip
Photograph signed: "Telly/Savalas". B/w, 8x10. In 1973, Telly Savalas (1922-1994) starred
as police lieutenant Theo Kojak in Kojak: The Marcus-Nelson Murders, a television movie
based on a real-life homicide. The actor's fully rounded interpretation of a sarcastic and
incorruptible New York detective and the popularity of the television production led to a
regular CBS series Kojak (1973-1978). The character Kojak and Savalas himself were
smokers, but Savalas started to quit after cigarette commercials were banned in 1971. As
Savalas quit smoking, so did his character. In a December episode of the show, Kojak
exchanged his cigarette for a Tootsie Pop lollipop. The cynical detective's whimsical
consumption of the candy soon became a trademark of the show. Before his Kojak role,
Savalas could be seen in various guest appearances and films. Most notably, he appeared in
Kelly's Heroes (1970) and On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). His numerous awards
include two Golden Globes (six nominations) and an Emmy Award (three nominations).
Slightly creased at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
