Kate Bosworth will star as Sharon Tate in a film which will focus on the life and legacy of the late actress, rather than her brutal murder conspired by Charles Manson.

Tate will be directed by Bosworth's husband Michael Polish, and produced by Tate's sister Debra.

The 35-year-old actress shared the announcement on Instagram, and revealed that the female-driven story will "celebrate Tate's life", and "take away the microphone from the maniac" behind her death.

"It is my honour to play Sharon Tate in our next film Tate," the star wrote on Instagram. "This movie will only celebrate her life. We will not violate her or exploit her death."

"For too long this beautiful woman made of light has had to endure tragedy. It is time to take away the microphone from the maniac," she continued.

"It's her time. Thank you Debra Tate for joining us in sharing your sister's life. I know, with you as our producing partner- we will do right. I love you. "And to my husband- who stands with me, everyday, striving to bring female forward stories to the screen. I love you. Simply, you are the greatest."

There are currently three other films about Tate and the Manson Family murders in production, including Quentin Tarantino's untitled project which has reportedly cast Leonardo DiCaprio as Charles Manson, and eyeing Margot Robbie as Tate.

Meanwhile, Hilary Duff will play Tate in psychological horror film The Haunting of Sharon Tate, which will centre on on the last days of Tate's life before her murder.

And The Crown's Matt Smith will play Charles Manson in independent movie Charlie Says, which will follow the lives of the three young women who were sentenced to death following the 1969 murders.

As producer of Tate, Debra fully approves of Bosworth and Polish's project because it "has nothing to do with Sharon's death".

"They're telling her story as a woman aside from the murders. Kate is going to capture Sharon’s heart, feeling and attitude," she added to People.

And although "there is no one that's ever going to look like Sharon", Debra said Bosworth is "very Sharon-like - she's kind-hearted, gentle and generous".

Speaking previously about the prospect of Jennifer Lawrence's potential casting as Tate in Tarantino's film, Debra told TMZ: "I don't think as much about Jennifer Lawrence.

"Not that I have anything against her but she just – I don't know – she's not pretty enough to play Sharon. That's a horrible thing to say, but you know, I have my standards."

Debra had previously branded Duff's film as "classless" and "exploitative" as next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the murders.
