Looking for adventure in Greece beyond the typical Acropolis and Santorini? Meteora might be the perfect day trip from Athens for you!

Meteora at a Glance

Meteora is an area in mainland Greece (4 hours by train from Athens) that has insanely beautiful, natural rock formations and boulders.

It is also known for its six Eastern Orthodox monasteries that were built ages ago atop the rocks.

How To Get To Meteora

You can visit the area on your own and rent a car or motorbike, or go with a tour agency!

If you go on your own, board the train from Athens to Kalabaka and vice versa to get back to Athens.

I went with Visit Meteora and genuinely loved it. They include transportation to three monasteries, the Hermit Caves of Badovas, and also photo spots to get spectacular photos. They also booked the roundtrip train ticket from Athens for me, which made the entire day super easy!

What To Wear On A Day Trip To Meteora

Definitely wear comfortable shoes for walking, climbing stairs, and exploring the rocky terrain!

I wore simple sneakers and felt fine. Sneakers, converse, or supportive sandals would be smart to wear.

Also, be sure to have your shoulders and knees covered to enter the monasteries.

Women still must wear a skirt or dress that covers the knees. If you wear pants or shorts, you can purchase a scarf for €3.

Entry Fees

Note that the monasteries require entry fees. Tickets range from €3-3.50 and must be paid in cash.

Outside the monasteries, you might find souvenir stands or snack/drink carts, so bring additional cash if you want to buy snacks or do any shopping!

Where To Eat In Meteora

Other than the snack/drink carts outside the monasteries, you won’t find restaurants or cafes unless you go back into the town of Kalabaka.

Kalabaka has plenty of bakeries, cafés, restaurants, and a grocery store.
