Damon Salvatore is the only older brother known of Stefan Salvatore and a distant relative of Zach Salvatore. He was born in the 1800s with his brother until he became a vampire. At the time of his return to Mystic Falls, Damon and Stefan hadn't seen each other in fifteen years because of their bitter and violent relationship.
Damon's sole purpose for coming back to Mystic Falls was to free Katherine Pierce, the vampire who had turned him and the woman he loved. After the realization that Katherine had never loved him, Damon started working with Stefan, and Katherine's doppelgänger, Elena Gilbert, with whom he fell in love with and has constantly tried to protect her.
Damon is also the head of the Founder's Council along with Sheriff Forbes and currently lives with Stefan in the Salvatore Boarding House. For the first season, Damon was the main antagonist, but has reverted his status to help Stefan and protect Elena.
He had been bitten by a werewolf, Tyler Lockwood after freeing him during a full moon which meant he was slowly dying but was later saved after being fed Klaus' blood by Katherine which healed him. Stefan gave himself over to Klaus for the cure for Damon.
Damon is a member of the Salvatore Family and a member of the Founder's Council.

Added by HoneiVladmirDamon was born to Giuseppe Salvatore and unnamed mother on June 28, 1840. He was in the Confederate Army but much to his father's disapproval, he quit. He likely did this to spend more time with Stefan and Katherine as he claimed he was having too much fun to leave.
He and his brother developed a mutual deep infatuation and for a vampire named Katherine. Stefan and Damon became rivals for her affections and she played with both of them in turn, planning to change them into vampires herself and spend eternity continuing to play them.
Damon was willing to give up his life and spend eternity with Katherine whilst she compelled Stefan to do so. He begged Stefan not to alert their father of Katherine's status as a vampire, knowing he would betray them and destroy her, but Stefan inadvertently broke that promise and Katherine was caught because of it.
Damon was devastated so he and Stefan devised a plan to rescue her, but the brothers were shot by their own father while attempting to do so. They had Katherine's blood in their systems so they began transitioning into vampires.
Because Katherine was now dead, Damon felt his reason for living was gone and decided to die and not complete the transition. However, after Stefan changed, he convinced Damon to complete the transition so they could be brothers for eternity. Damon, furious that Katherine had chosen to turn Stefan as well, drank blood but vowed that he would provide Stefan with an eternity of misery.
Damon dies from a gunshot wound.
Added by EhpachaWhen Emily Bennett, Katherine's handmaiden who was also a witch, saw he had completed transitioning, she revealed that she had protected Katherine and the other vampires when they were placed in Fell's Church with a spell of hers.
She also gave them protection rings, telling them that Katherine had her make them. For the next 145 years, Damon plotted to set Katherine free. He also planned to return to Mystic Falls for the purpose of freeing her.
He has recently returned to the town of Mystic Falls. He was the cause of the recent string of deaths occurring in and around the town because he still fed on humans, unlike Stefan, and was stronger than his brother because of this.

Biography
Ian Somerhalder was born in Covington, Louisiana on December 8, 1978. His father, Robert Somerhalder, was a building contractor of French and English descent, and his mother, Edna, who is of Irish and Choctaw descent, was a massage therapist. He has a brother, Bob, a former professional cyclist, and a sister, Robin, a broadcast journalist. Boating, swimming, fishing and training horses filled much of his recreational time growing up, as did the school drama club and performing with the local theater group. With his mother's encouragement, at age 10 he began a modeling career that took him to New York each summer. By junior high, he opted to put modeling on the back burner and focus more on sports and school. A few years later, when the opportunity to model in Europe arose, Somerhalder grabbed it, embarking on an enriching path of work, travel and study that took him to cities including Paris, Milan and London.
At 17, he began studying acting in New York, and by 19 had committed himself to the craft, working with preeminent acting coach William Esper. His fate was sealed while working as an extra in a club scene in the feature film Black & White (1999). A talent manager visiting a client on the set spotted Somerhalder in a crowd scene of 400 and immediately signed him for representation. Happy to be anchored in New York, Somerhalder spends much of his time studying acting, writing and practicing yoga. His recreational interests include water and snow skiing and horseback riding. Recently he has helped raise funds for 'Disaster in the Gulf', to help the people affected by a oil spill on the gulf coast.
