Lewis Hamilton has revealed what caused his break up with Nicole Scherzinger last year.

Speaking to Top Gear Magazine, the Formula 1 driver opened up about his past relationship and admitted that he split from the former X Factor judge as there was something more important to him than romance.

"My cars are my babies," said the 31 year-old. "I used to say, when I had a girlfriend, 'I'm taking one of the girls out, so you can come if you want, but you come second when it comes to the cars.'"

Ouch.

The pair had an on/off relationship for seven years before putting an end to their romance last year. Although neither of them had commented on the reasons behind their split, it was reported that it was due to long distance.

However, since the split, it's been safe to say the Grand Prix champ hasn't been short of female attention as he's been linked to a number of other ladies in the limelight including Chanel Iman and Rita Ora.

Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton were spotted at the same London nightclub this weekend... but are they back on?

According to sources, the pair both attended The Box nightclub in Soho on Friday night and spent four hours inside together to watch singer John Newman perform.

The pair reportedly left the venue seperately.

A source told The Sun: "They arrived separately to watch a John Newman performance and sat at different tables.

"But then they were taken to a private room. John and 5 Seconds Of Summer were in a second one."

The source added: "The Box's security were not allowed in Nicole and Lewis' room and told to not let anybody else in.

"They stayed well after the club shut. Staff were desperate for them to leave."

Do we sense a reconciliation?...

A spokesperson for Nicole told The Mirror: "It was a coincidence they were both at the same club. Nicole is not back with Lewis."

Referring to her as his "friend", Lewis claimed their time together made him who he is now, and wished her all the best for the future.

He wrote: "Dear friend, Through the years we shared alot, i wouldn't have changed a thing. All the experiences made me the man i'm proud to be right now.

"The Memories together will never be taken away no matter how old we get and I'm thankful for the time we had.

"I'm wishing you the Happiest of Birthdays, and may God continue to Bless you in all that you do. #waayyyupstayblessed."

While Lewis appears to have moved on with TV appearances, red carpets and A-list parties, Nicole has kept herself out of the limelight since their split.

Nicole is currently celebrating her birthday in Mykonos, and captioned this idyllic photo: "Goodmorning from#Mykonos...I couldn't imagine a better birthday view to wake too...actually haven't slept. Don't want to miss a second of this day. Not a moment.#stillness Reflecting...where does the time go? Thru it all, I'm so full of #loveand #gratitude. Poor Nicole Scherzinger. The singer has confirmed that she's split from Lewis Hamilton a fourth time, saying she's "heartbroken and devastated" by the end of their relationship.

"I'm devastated that it didn't work out. It was the hardest decision we had to make, but we made it together," she confirmed. "I love Lewis and I know he loves me. We wish nothing but happiness and the very best for one another."

She added: "I'm trying to stay strong in my faith right now." Although the star hasn't gone into details, media outlets are reporting that it's due to Lewis' refusal to settle down and marry her.

"She finally had enough. Nicole knew Lewis had no plans to marry her, she's completely gutted and feels lost about her future," a source said. "They spend so much time apart that things just became untenable."

While Lewis is busy racing around the streets of Monaco, Nicole has been performing in London in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical CATS. It's thought that members of her family have flown over from the US to help the star through this difficult time.

Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton have split after five years together.

The F1 driver and X Factor judge are thought to have ended their relationship because their busy work schedules made it difficult to spend time together.

A source said: "Nicole is just so heartbroken and completely devastated."

The singer's rep confirmed the news, just a few weeks after Lewis was rumoured to be planning to propose.

He told reporters: "We've been together for five years, which is quite a milestone really. But hopefully in the near future. Maybe before we get to six years."

Nicole has been a keen supporter of Lewis on the racetrack. "For me there's only ever one winner and a lot of people would agree with me on that - Lewis is the best," she said recently.

But the relationship is thought to have become strained when Nicole took up the role of X Factor judge, meaning that she has to travel around the country during the auditions phase.

The pair met at the European Music Awards in 2007 and officially went public six months later at the Monaco Grand Prix.
