Former Italy goalkeeper Walter Zenga quit as coach of Dinamo Bucharest after the club were beaten 1-0 in a derby against Steaua Bucharest.
"It's easier to fire a coach rather than 30 players," Zenga, who took charge of the club in September, said.
Steaua beat champions Dinamo late on Saturday with a goal from Adrian Neaga in a match marred by violent clashes between fans and riot police.
Dinamo spokesman Ionel Culina said Zenga, who had signed a two-year contract, handed in his notice early on Sunday despite being asked to stay on by the club board.
"I failed to do well at Dinamo and this made me abandon the idea of continuing in Romanian soccer," said Zenga who had previously coached National Bucharest and Steaua.
Dinamo lie sixth in the league on 26 points, 14 fewer than leaders CRF Cluj. Steaua are fifth on 28 and have a match in hand.
Zenga was fired by Steaua two years ago even though the team were leading the table and went on to win the league title.
