Rooney Mara drapes baby bump in maternity top on solo stroll... after sharing pregnancy news on Berlinale red carpet

Rooney Mara draped her baby bump in a flowing, casual ensemble when she surfaced in Los Angeles this week.

The 38-year-old actress is expecting her second child by her fiancé Joaquin Phoenix, whom she has been romantically involved with for eight years.

She broke the news of her latest pregnancy by cradling her blossoming bump as she posed on a red carpet at the Berlinale less than two weeks ago.

Then this Tuesday, with the cat out of the bag, she was spotted dashing around Los Angeles in a comfy-looking outfit including a maternity t-shirt and a jacket.

Sweeping her dark brown hair into a high ponytail, she popped on a pair of sunglasses and kept herself entertained with her headphones on.

She debuted her baby bump at the Berlinale premiere of her film La Cocina, a drama about a Manhattan restaurant from Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios.

Rooney cut a luminous figure on the red carpet in a gently ruffled, strapless black gown that flowed back into a small train in a touch of retro chic.

As the shutterbugs snapped away at her, she folded her hands at her waist, cinching the fabric in to throw her burgeoning bump into relief.

Rooney and Joaquin struck up their romance in 2016 and in 2020 they welcomed their son River, named after Joaquin's late brother, a Hollywood heartthrob who died of an overdose of cocaine and morphine at the age of 23.

Joaquin and Rooney are known for being assiduously private about their personal lives, waiting months after their son's birth before discussing the matter in public.

News of River's arrival broke in September 2020 when the Russian filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky leaked the information at the Zurich Film Festival.

The director was premiering his documentary Gunda, which had Joaquin for an executive producer, and discussed the movie star during an onstage Q&A.

'He just got a baby, by the way,' Victor spilled to the live audience in a sound-byte that quickly went viral. 'A beautiful son called River.'

Two months later, Joaquin and Rooney broke their silence about their baby for the first time in a People op-ed about migrant children at the US-Mexico border.

'As new parents, it's unbearable to imagine what it would feel like to have our child taken away from us for a day, let alone years,' they wrote.

Rooney appeared on the Launch Left podcast last year and waxed rhapsodic about the joy she experienced after becoming a mother,

'I love it. I love it so much. I think it's the best thing in the world,' she gushed. 'I mean, it sounds so cliché when you talk about it, but things are cliché for a reason.'

She acknowledged that she leads 'a very privileged life,' one that affords her the luxury of scaling back her work obligations to spend more time with her son.

'Motherhood is very challenging, even when you have a privileged life, and I'm so lucky that I have the choice to get to be with him most of the time,' she said.

'That I'm like" "Oh, I'm just going to work once a year if something feels right, and other than that, this is what I'm doing." Most people don't have that option.'
