Locally-Built Sandero Introduces A New Era For Renault In South Africa

    *
New Renault Sandero hits the South African market with orders opening on 21/02. Extremely competitive prices start at R98 800 with a 3 year / 100 000 km warranty.

    *
New Renault Sandero provides a high-value proposition: affordable motoring, together with impressive levels of space, reliability and features. It allows Renault to compete in one of the passenger car market’s biggest segments.

    *
The range is perfectly in tune with customer needs and market trends. And it meets the desperate need for affordability and outright value in a tense economic climate.

    *
Sandero is expected to revolutionise entry-level motoring in SA with an unparalleled package. The result of R1-billion investment by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, it allows Renault to compete effectively at the entry level for the first time.

    *
Local production will allow significant local content, with direct benefits in terms of parts sourcing, pricing and availability. It adds to the Sandero proposition of affordability linked to safety, style, space and features – and, ultimately, value for money.

    *
Sandero based on Renault’s B0 platform, shared by the Logan sedan. Five-door hatchback styling is assertive, with broad appeal. Exterior dimensions and interior space rival larger, more expensive vehicles. The luggage compartment is generous, too.

    *
      Two engines – a 55 kW 1,4 and a 64 kW 1,6-litre unit – are offered, both linked to a five-speed manual gearbox.

    *
All of these elements establish the new Renault Sandero as the class leader in one of the most hotly contested segments in the passenger car market. Fuel efficiency is a key factor in both cases.

    *
The Sandero range consists of five models, with satisfying safety and convenience features on even the entry-level version. Three of the five also offer a full maintenance plan – a first in this market segment, further strengthening the Sandero’s value proposition. Pricing starts at R98 800 – well under the key R100 000 mark.

The Renault Sandero makes its highly anticipated South African market debut with the emphasis on providing a high-value proposition, by offering affordable motoring, matched to impressive levels of space, reliability and features.

As the first Renault to be produced in South Africa in more than 30 years, it marks a turning point for the brand locally, giving it a platform to compete in one of the passenger car market’s biggest segments.

"The Sandero is the right car at the right time," says Xavier Gobille, managing director of Renault SA. "It is a key model in our revitalisation strategy, and represents Renault's firm commitment to offering a product range that is perfectly in tune with customer requirements and market trends in South Africa.

"More crucially, however, it meets the desperate need for affordability and outright value in a tense economic climate defined by credit restrictions, negative economic sentiment and severe budget constraints."

Revolutionary

The Sandero five-door hatchback is expected to revolutionise the local entry-level segment by delivering an unparalleled package that ticks all the right boxes as far as pricing, practicality, styling, safety and spaciousness are concerned.

The local production of the Sandero is the result of a R1-billion joint investment by the Renault-Nissan Alliance at the organisation's Rosslyn plant, near Pretoria.

Marking a step-change in Renault's status as being merely importer since returning to SA in 1996, the commencement of Sandero production allows the French manufacturer to effectively compete in the entry-level segment for the first time.

"By manufacturing the Sandero in South Africa, we have been able to incorporate significant local content and parts sourcing which, in turn, has a positive spin-off on pricing and availability," Gobille says.

"This follows our philosophy of delivering an affordable range of products that is modern, safe, stylish, spacious and well equipped. We believe the Sandero fulfils that mandate, and offers an unrivalled motoring proposition defined by unbeatable value for money."

Versatile B0 platform

The Sandero is latest product based on Renault's B0 platform, which was designed as a multi-faceted basis for a wide range of products with different body styles and engines to meet varying customer needs.

South Africans were first introduced to this platform with the Logan, launched locally in October 2008. This aggressively priced sedan has already significantly bolstered Renault's monthly sales volumes, and the Sandero is set to continue this upward spiral.

With its modern and attractive design, the Sandero will appeal to both first-time buyers and existing motorists in the market for a practical and modern, yet inexpensive five-door hatch.

The design is both expressive and assertive, with the contoured headlights integrating neatly with the familiar Renault grille. The side profile is characterised by an inverted wave-shaped body, while the rear view adds a dynamic element to the robust styling.

Unrivalled space and comfort

The Sandero introduces a new level of spaciousness, as well as practical and innovative packaging, to this entry-level segment.

At a length of 4 020 mm, this appealing five-door hatchback easily punches well above its class positioning in terms of interior space and comfort. This is further accentuated by the above-average width, height and wheelbase – all of which come close to rivalling the C-segment standards.

In particular, the large doors and generous shoulder room at the rear allow for three adults to be accommodated in comfort.

Similarly, the Sandero's unrivalled price-versus-space ratio is evident in the vast 320-litre luggage capacity, which rivals the B-segment hatchback contenders. This makes it a versatile and intelligent choice.

Access to the luggage compartment is facilitated by a wide-opening rear hatch, with the split-folding rear seats expanding the volume to a commodious 1 200 litres.

All of these elements establish the new Renault Sandero as the class leader in one of the most hotly contested segments in the passenger car market.

Practical, robust and reliable

Competing in a price-sensitive sector typically dominated by older-generation vehicles, the Sandero represents a fresh offering combining generous space and sturdiness, all underpinned by solid engineering.

The platform is shared with the Logan sedan, and offers stable handling characteristics matched to sure-footed confidence regardless of the driving conditions, whether on smoothly tarred roads or poor surfaces.

Meticulous attention has been paid to anti-corrosion measures to ensure exceptional longevity in the harsh operating conditions the Sandero is likely to encounter in South Africa.  Also, interior materials have been selected for their durability.

A single-unit dashboard is fitted to eliminate rattles, while also being designed to minimise injuries in the event of an impact.

Proven engines

At launch, two engines are available in the Sandero, comprising Renault's proven fuel-injected 8-valve 1,4 and 1,6-litre four-cylinder units – both of which are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

Both of these powerplants are renowned for their reliability, efficiency and low maintenance requirements, while offering solid performance focussed on impressive torque levels from low engine speeds.

The entry-level 1 390 cc unit produces a maximum power output of 55 kW at 5 500 r/min, allied to a torque peak of 112 Nm at 3 000 r/min.

The engine is capable of propelling the Sandero 1.4 to 100 km/h from standstill in 13 sec, and on to a top speed of 161 km/h, while returning a combined cycle fuel consumption of 7,0 l/100 km. This drops to just 5,4 l/100 km in freeway driving conditions.

All Sandero models are equipped as standard with a catalytic converter, and the CO2 emissions rating for the 1.4 is 165 g/km.

The larger-capacity 1 598 cc engine is renowned for its torquey nature, and is credited with respective peak outputs of 64 kW at 5 500 r/min and 128 Nm at 3 000 r/min. It allows the
0-100 km/h sprint to be dispatched in 11,5 sec, with an accompanying top speed of 174 km/h.

Fuel efficiency remains a key feature of this unit, consuming 7,2 l/100 km in mixed conditions, and 5,6 l/100 km on the open road. The CO2 emissions rating is 170 g/km.

Model range

A total of five models is available in the Sandero range, with the entry-level 1.4 Authentique offering unrivalled value – and, vitally, priced under the key R100 000 mark.

In brief, standard specification on this base model includes power steering, a collapsible steering wheel, height adjustment for the driver's seat, a driver's airbag, four speakers and pre-fitted wiring for a CD receiver.

Also included are a heated rear screen with wash-wipe function, high-mounted third brake light, an integrated immobiliser, headlight level adjustment, full wheel covers and a full-size 14-inch steel spare wheel, as well as comprehensive instrumentation.

Standard on all models is a 3-year/100 000 km mechanical warranty and 6-year anti-corrosion warranty, while service intervals are stipulated at every 15 000 km.

In addition to this, the 1.6 Expression gains a passenger-side airbag with a deactivation switch, air-conditioning, key-operated central locking, and satin chrome finishes for the dashboard facia and interior door strips.

Also included are fabric door trim inserts, while white instrument dials with satin chrome surrounds count amongst its significant differentiating features.

In the case of the 1.6 Expression Pack, a more comprehensive array of active safety features is include. These comprise the advanced Bosch 8.0 anti-locking braking system (ABS), enhanced with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and electronic brake assist (EBA).

This model also receives remote central locking with selective unlocking functionality, as well as the Renault Anti-Intrusion Device (RAID) for added security.

Adding further to the high-value purchasing proposition, a full 5-year/60 000 km maintenance plan is standard on the 1.6 Expression Pack, and the two higher-spec models in the line-up.

Offering a full maintenance plan in the budget sector, and at this price level, is a local industry first, and strongly underscores Renault’s commitment to superior value and customer satisfaction.

A 3-year/45 000 km service plan or a 5-year/60 000 km maintenance plan are available as added-cost options in the case of the 1.4 Authentique and 1.6 Expression variants.

One step up, the 1.6 Expression+ Pack is differentiated by the inclusion of electrically operated front windows, an MP3-compatible CD receiver, body-coloured side mirrors and classy satin chrome door handles.

Filling the range-topping role, the full-spec 1.6 Dynamique boasts electric mirrors, electrically operated front and rear windows, a useful 60:40 split for the folding rear seats, and height-adjustable front seatbelts.

There are also additional satin chrome finishes on the air vents and the gearknob insert, together with body-coloured side door mouldings, a colour-coded grille with chrome detail strip, front fog lamps and 15-inch alloy wheels shod with 185/65 R15 tyres.

Fan3
stergatoarele au alt mecanism !
slider2
