Hi!

I'm form Latvia (Romanians know this country as Letonia). From 1st of June this year Renault dealer started to sell Logan in Latvia.
Here is the price list:
Acces 1.4 - 6 849 EUR
Ambiance 1.4 - 7 357 EUR
Ambiance 1.6 - 7 708 EUR
Laureate 1.4 - 7 923 EUR
Laureate 1.6 - 8 276 EUR

As you can see Laureate 1.4 is just 215 EUR more then Ambiance 1.6.
Laureate 1.4 compared to Ambiance 1.6 has smaller engine, but comes with alloy wheel 15 full, radio-cd 4x15W (radio-tape 2x15W in Ambiance), power operated rear windows and manual air conditioner.

So, here is my question - is engine power worth the bonuses, which come with Laureate?

P.S. I'm a big guy - 115 kg, the same with my father. We together will considerably increase the weight of the car. This is why I was thinking about bigger engine. But in some of old posts here I read that 1.6 is not much stronger then 1.4, that is why the question arosed.

Depends on what's more important for you. A slightly quicker engine , or more confort (Air Conditioning especially). The Radio-CD isn't such a big deal .. neither are the power rear windows (who needs those anyway?). Does the 1.6 Ambiance have A/C as an added option over there?

Go for the AC version if it is hot in summer in Latvia.
If u can affor to buy a 1.6 version with AC go for it.

The diference between the 1,6 engine and 1,4 is real... you have more power and this count when you need to use big power consumers like AC... also, the consumption of the 1,6 engine is lower at high speeds (> 130)...

For me, the only one target was to have AC (in Romania the summer is very hot)... for this reason I have a Laureate 1,4, but in some moments I need the aditional power of the 1,6 engine...

Yes, we do have AC as an added option for Ambiance 1.6. Ok, I got the idea. Thank you for answers!

If you are a very calm driver smile.gif, the 350 Euro difference doesn't worth. (bigger consumption of 1.6 is also a second very important factor)
But if your driving style is a little bit "faster" I think that this 350 euro more is OK

1.6 with out any question, the 1.6 cold use some more horse power allso. But both choices will serve you well.

You must allways be aware of the limitations of the car, no matter how many horse power it has.

I don't know what it's like in Latvia, but in Romania, the only model available with ABS ith the 1.6. Since I absolutely wanted ABS, the choice was easy for me... Knowing that in Latvia it snows and rains too, I think ABS is a wise choice.
If the story with the ABS is the same as in Romania, I recommend the 1.6 l engine (0.4 l more average consumption is not so much after all)

I saw all the last shows of Top Gear and they only mentioned Logan once. It was a positive thing, because they were talking about cars not available in UK. They were making two piles: we want them here and we are better off without them. Jeremy Clarkson said it was an interesting car and put it in with the cars they want in the UK.

I have the 1,6 engine on my Logan and still would like more power...But if I were to chose I would go for (in this order): ABS, AC, more power

I got the 1.6 l engine and it works just fine.
As the guys said the ABS comes first for me also.
Nevertheless, my choice wasn't totaly influenced by the fact that I wanted a car equiped with ABS. I wanted as badly the 1.6 l engine for the extra power and the result matches my expectations.
I drove a Dacia Solenza (same engine as Logan 1.4) and the engine seemed a little too soft for my likings.
But, in the end, you are the only one who can balance all these variables and make the right choice to meet your budget and performance expenctations.
Good Luck. wink.gif

1,4 with consumption of 6-6,5 liters of gas with economic style of driving in the city is the right choice... it is enough powerful in every road situation (especialy in 3 and 4th speed)

i was so supprised, when i realize that logan can succesfully run in 4th speed from 40-100kmh.... i mean, when you drive, allways are traffic situations around you,and loggy can handle it veery good in 4th speed...

It depends what you need. Of course that the 1.4 has enough power in 3rd and 4th gear, but will that be more efficient than the 1.6? I have serious doubts. Plus, as you have probably figured out, Logan in kind of a familly car so you'll probably carry some loads with it (people, goods, etc), thus the extra power would be very convenient.

I think you should spend som extra 350 Euro and take the Laureate 1.6. The difference between 1.4 and 1.6 in terms of power and torque is very big. With the 1.4 is often risky when trying to trespass other cars in a sporty way. With the 1.6 you have enough power reserve in almost any conditions.

Yes, all of us are car racers and we always need to trespass other cars in a sporty way wacko.gif
To much power sometimes means more risk.
I think it is better to spend extra money for better tyres.

For the cost you should ask the dealer.
As for the installation, I don't see why not since there are no major differences between a Logan with A/C and one without (maybe some extra space under the hood biggrin.gif )

As far as I know, the differences are much deeper, including the ECU injection tables. I think it's way too much hassle to install the air conditioning system later, the best way to go would be to order your car with AC.

And now back to the 1.4 v.s 1.6 question.

I still havent seen a 1.6 in Zagreb, except mine offcourse smile.gif

But there's more and more Logans, and the predominant color is toreador red.

EDIT

To be correct I have not seen a 1.6 Logan with Croatian plates other than mine smile.gif, I think vv's was 1.6

Liar! Mine is 1.6 too tongue.gif
I saw quite a few Logans in Croatia (~10 I think), but I didn't really pay a look to see whether they are 1.4 or 1.6.
And to answer your question - in 5th gear, 1.6 (fully loaded) could only go 80km/h on the highway (whille climbing the mountains). So I guess that considering your highways, 1.6 is a good option wink.gif
