Slicing is the term for preparing an object to 3D print and it is the core software for most of the 3D printing in the Fab Lab.

Ultimaker Cura is a 3D printer slicing software that provides an intuitive and user-friendly interface that simplifies the configuration process for your 3D printing projects. Taking a 3D object file like an OBJ or an STL, and referencing a set of user-defined settings, Cura slices your 3D model into layers and paths that a 3D printer can understand. This sliced file is represented as a preview in Cura, so users can verify that the model will print successfully. If the file is good, it can be exported as a Gcode file to the 3D printer’s memory card, and the printer will begin the process of producing a real-world copy of the virtual model.
