Why this petition matters

The Clown Knifefish is technically an invasive species, however we have spoken to FWC officers in the past and have been told numerous times that they are not a threat to the native fish in our waterways. Peacock Bass were introduced in Florida in 1984 and generate well over 286,000 hours of angling enjoyment each year and provides nearly $5 million of annual economic benefit. The local charter guides make their living off of catching and releasing peacock bass as well as clown knife fish, and we have clients traveling from all over the country to cross clowns off of their angling bucket list. This not only benefits local guides, but also hotels, restaurants, tackle shops, the state of Florida with purchase of the required freshwater fishing license, and more. We believe these fish should be protected with bag limits so they can continue to fuel our local economy.

In the Lake Ida/Osborne chain alone there are over 10 full time guides doing well over 200 trips each per year who primarily target these fish. The majority of their clients are from out of state. This adds up to over 200,000 people visiting the state of Florida for this elusive fish. We strongly believe if this fish is decimated the local economy will be impacted.

Please join us by signing this petition to influence FWC to classify the Clown Knifefish as a game fish in the state of Florida.
