Though the public knows Kate Hudson as a gorgeous and talented actress, the 44-year-old has revealed to podcast host and comedian Chelsea Handler that her dream was to be a musician. On top of that, she hinted that she’s no longer keeping it "just" a dream, and has been developing a debut album. “I love to sing. I mean, honestly, when I was younger I thought that's what I was going to do,” she said on her episode of Dear Chelsea....“You know, I thought I was going to sing and dance and musical theater was always my favorite type of acting, other than improv. But really I thought I was gonna sing,” she told Handler.

With her role in the 2000 movie Almost Famous, Hudson’s acting career took off when she was just 19 years old. Her performance as the character Penny Lane would go on to earn Hudson a Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress and an Oscar nomination for the same category. From there, her career launched her into movie stardom, as she starred in classic romantic comedies like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Fool’s Gold, and Bride Wars. “You don't break what's not broken,” Hudson explained, “You don't go from being an actor to like, now I'm, you know, a musician. So, I just kind of kept it to myself forever. I just wrote music my whole life and I have never shared it.”

It took some new inspiration for Hudson to revive her music, and it appears she’s doing just that. “In the lockdown I was really writing music and then I was like, I can't keep going and not put this out there,” she revealed in the podcast.

While the pandemic may have been a launchpad to resume writing, it was the musicians around her that gave her confidence. In addition to working with singer-songwriter Linda Perry, Kate Hudson also found herself working with her friend and Australian singer-songwriter Sia. “She really gave me that kiss of confidence,” Hudson said, recalling when Sia labeled her a singer. “I had a hard time really believing in myself as a singer for a number of different reasons. But over the years as I got older, I got more and more kind of closed off with my singing, and then Sia really opened it back up again for me, for sure.”

She continued, “It just sort of unfolded from there with no expectation. It just sort of was like, I'm just gonna make a record. I'm gonna make a record. And here I am like two years later. It's been a great, really great massive creative experience for me and I can't wait for it to come out.“ As Chelsea Handler joked about Kate’s past musician exes giving her previous touring experience, the host asked, “And you’re gonna go on tour, right?” Hudson seemed thrilled about the possibility, but added, “the only way I'm gonna get back on tour is if I do it myself.”
