About the author
Brian Quail is founder and CEO of Quail Consulting, which focuses on guiding nonprofit CEOs and boards to achieve exceptional results. His nonprofit career spanned four decades, including twenty-five years serving as CEO of three affiliates of national organizations: Heart of Florida United Way, American Red Cross Louisville Area Chapter, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. Combined, his fundrais- ing, oversight, analysis, and development efforts throughout his professional life have resulted in over one billion dollars in human-services funding.
Born in Clinton and raised in neighboring Sterling, Massachusetts, Brian attributes his discipline and integrity to his hard-working blue-collar parents. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he went on to the University of Chicago where he earned his MA in nonprofit administration and management in 1984.
Since 2009, he and his wonderful wife, Liz, have called Fort Lauderdale, Florida, home. There he enjoys spending time with their amazing daughter, Chloe, running his consulting and speaking services, volunteering, fitness training, playing golf, and attending sporting events.

Somehow, I had the good fortune to also be a board member for a while with Brian as the new CEO. I got to see Brian lead the Non-Profit to beyond expectations. His leadership was inspirational for me turning around my Non-Profit Professional Organization. I know my experience then is why my former Professional Organization continues today. How much easier it would have been if I had Brian’s book back then.
I am not the first to say Brian’s book is a “Master Class” for new Non-Profit CEOs. I call this book a “Blessing in Disguise” because it is not just for new CEOs. Actually, it is more because it offers organizational excellence, community relationships and examples for all Non-Profit Team Members and Donors that are passionate about supporting their treasured Non-Profits. My copy of Brian’s Book has a number of “dog eared” pages to return to as reference to share specific passages with others.
Yes, I am still involved with volunteering with a number of Non-Profits. I am excited to share Brian’s Book because I know they will find new inspiration to help their Non-Profits grow. When all levels of Non-Profit staff have the opportunity to read and learn from a Guidebook like Brian’s I believe your Non-Profit Team will be on a cohesive quest for excellence.
As I write this review on “Giving Tuesday” there is urgent time left in the year for Non-Profits to reach their financial goals. Blink and it will be a new year to start a new annual fund-raising clock. If at this time of the year your fund-raising is praying for a Photo-finish it means all the hard work this past needed a better strategy. Learn Brian’s Five Frameworks and it is Non-Profit Team Victory Lap time ready for next year’s first 90 days.
Blessings to everyone of the believers that work for and support their Non-Profits with passion.
This is a very well written and engaging book. And I can personally testify to the efficacy of the program he has so eloquently outlined. I have always considered the role of a nonprofit CEO to be one of the most challenging leadership positions in the professional world. These leaders are faced with the daunting task of doing more with less. I witnessed Brian walk the talk he describes in his book. I believe this guide can be a very effective and practical tool to help not only new CEOs, but volunteer Board Chairs charged with finding and supervising these valuable executives.
I, like Brian, entered the nonprofit management consulting world several years ago. A few days before this book became available on Amazon, the CEO of one of my clients announced her resignation. I was so impressed after reading Brian’s book on Kindle, that I ordered a hard copy version for the incoming Board Chair. I am certain if the volunteer leaders help their new CEO apply the principles and practical exercises described in this book, their collective future will be filled with success. I whole-heartedly recommend The Ultimate Guide for New Nonprofit CEOs.
