Conference Proceedings: IASPM 2009. "The Music of Exil of Mikis Theodorakis: the Eternal Voice of Freedom..."2009 •
In Greece, one of the consequences of the World War II was the onset of the Civil War. Conflict between the Right and Left wing parties was running high. Having been defeated the leftists were obliged to go into exile; among them was the Greek composer, politician and philosopher Mikis Theodorakis. However, his exile did not prevent him from continuing his musical and political activities. On the contrary, he was very productive and composed many musical works, such as “The Songs of Exile A’”, the “First Symphony” etc., during his incarceration. In 1949, after the end of the Civil War, he was liberated but his fate was to reserve for him a new period of exile. Almost twenty years later, during the Dictatorship of Colonels (1967-1974), his lack of freedom made his will to struggle stronger and so, he composed new musical works, among them: “The Songs of Exile B’”, “The Songs of the Struggle”, “The Sun and the Time”, the last one based on his own poetry. The aim of this paper is firstly, to examine the general historical and social context and the specific conditions which gave birth to these musical works of Mikis Theodorakis, and secondly, to highlight, through a specific poetical and musical analysis (prosody, melody, rhythm, harmony…), their diachronic value.

Due to technical developments in computer-based sound editing, the inclusion of imaginary spaces in electroacoustic music has been possible for quite some time. Imaginary spaces are those that are not perceivable in reality. These spaces arise when one alters the acoustic features or spatial indicators of the space so much that its space impression seems unrealistic or imaginary. In the formation of imaginary spaces, and even in the stimulation of the listener’s imagination, electroacoustic music provides a degree of control that is superior to instrumental music. Electroacoustic music is thus suitable in many contexts — for instance, virtual reality computer games and film. Electroacoustic music also provides composers with flexibility in the formation of abstract ideas and the development of new musical languages based on sound metamorphosis. Such an art enables sounds — with unknown tone colours, unrealistic space impressions, and abstract contexts — to detach listeners from the ...
This paper is a portfolio/catalog of my original graphical works and continues our familial activity in visual arts (listed in the chronological order of their creation) [1]. Each graphical work is presented as a table containing not only that piece but also important information on its creation: the title, the approximate date of its creation, the paper size, and the graphical technique used plus various observations and explanations on that work. Approximate date of creation (and my age then): Paper size: A4 (portrait/landscape) The graphical technique used: Various observations and explanations on the work: ** The graphical works contained in this portfolio/catalog, listed in the approximate chronological order of their creation. * [1] Approximate date of creation (and my age then): 2001 (19 years-old) Paper size: A4 (portrait) The graphical technique used: Chemical pencil and spread dust of such chemical pencil Various observations and explanations on the work: The central motif is a recorder (a motif which is used to build the harp, the pan flute emerging from the piano keys etc). The background scene contains many other instruments (like the piano, guitar, harp, cello, balalaika etc) and a large human hand (with instrument-shaped fingers) playing the keys of another mountain-like keyboard from the right-side (diametrally opposed to the one from the left-side of the picture). #DONATIONS. oggetti II (2021), written between November 17 and December 7, 2021 for the TACETi Ensemble and Thailand New Music and Arts Symposium, is the second work in a larger cycle exploring concise musical objects, gestures, and formal constellations. Over time, my compositional process has become increasingly introspective and critical—thus, oggetti II is an attempt to re-capture the spirit of my earlier works with a more spontaneous and economical nature. oggetti I (Omaggio a Sciarrino) for wind quintet and antistasis for Ensemble Nikel were composed nearly simultaneously in a 10-day period during the summer of 2014 in NYC. Many concepts and compositional devices are shared, but not musical materials. antistasis, meaning opposition, is a rhetorical term for the repetition of a word or phrase in a different or contrary sense. This was poetically translated through the repetition of a small number of musical gestures, or objects, continually recurring and recontextualized so as to contribute to the composite in different ways. oggetti I and now oggetti II both function in a similar manner, drawing upon extremely limited materials reconfigured in various ways, something like a musical jigsaw puzzle.
