Ancient Greek documents a great diversity of expressions related to human stupidity. In many of them they appear individuals and even peoples who became a paradigm of stupidity, to which all kinds of foolish actions were attributed. These paradigmatic fools could be characters created by popular imagination, figures of literary origin, cities and regions whose inhabitants were considered especially fool, and animals that had a reputation for being particularly stupid. In this article we will deal with the individuals who paradigmatically represented foolishness for the ancient Greeks: characters probably created by popular imagination like Coroebus, Melitides and Acco; divine figures such as Dionysus Morychos and the Egyptian god Bes; characters from literature such as Margites and the Adonis by the poet Praxilla; historical figures such as the boxer Buthos and the poet Ibycus. We also include a short catalog of phrases that designates paradigmatically absurd or useless actions, typical of fools. Keywords: Phraseology. Ancient Greek. Stupidity. Coroebus. Melitides. Margites. Acco.

PERFORMANCE AND STABILITY OF SOME BREAD WHEAT GENOTYPES FOR GRAIN YIELD, PROTEIN AND GLUTEN CONTENTS UNDER DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS [72015 •
Seventeen genotypes (G) of bread wheat (14 promising lines and 3 commercial cultivars) were evaluated for mean performance and stability of grain yield/plant, grain protein content and dry glu-ten percentage under 16 environments (two loca-tions (L), two sowing dates(D) and four fertilization treatments (F)). The results confirmed the exist-ence of considerable genetic variation among gen-otypes and their performance was significantly affected by different environments for the studied traits. Kalubia locations recorded the highest mean values for grain yield/plant while; Fayoum location recorded the highest mean values for the two qual-ity traits. Yield and quality traits were significantly increased on early (recommended) sowing dates at Kalubia and Fayoum locations than on late sow-ing dates. Applying biofertilizer only gave the low-est mean performance in all traits, but adding min-eral N besides biofertilizer markedly increased grain yield/plant and the two quality traits. Howev-er, insignificant differences existed between the rate of nitrogen recommended (80kg N/fed.) and the rate of (biofertilizer + 60kgN/fed.), indicating that biofertilizer could be efficient in reducing costs of the expensive mineral N and reducing environ-mental pollution. On an average highest values of grain yield/plant were recorded by the promising wheat lines no. 10 (24.57 g), no. 9 (22.50 g), and no. 11 (21.64 g) as compared to the best check cultivar Giza 168. Meantime, this cultivar sur-passed the other genotypes in protein and dry glu-ten percentages. Concerning phenotypic stability, the three superior lines no. 10, 9 and 11 gave the highest mean values (x¯) of grain/plant coupled with significant regression coefficient (bi) values higher than unity and significant deviation from regression (S2di), thus they considered specifically adapted to favourable environments.

Genetic Variation in the SLC8A1 Calcium Signaling Pathway Is Associated With Susceptibility to Kawasaki Disease and Coronary Artery Abnormalities2016 •
Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute pediatric vasculitis in which host genetics influence both susceptibility to KD and the formation of coronary artery aneurysms. Variants discovered by genome-wide association studies and linkage studies only partially explain the influence of genetics on KD susceptibility. To search for additional functional genetic variation, we performed pathway and gene stability analysis on a genome-wide association study data set. Pathway analysis using European genome-wide association study data identified 100 significantly associated pathways (P<5×10(-)(4)). Gene stability selection identified 116 single nucleotide polymorphisms in 26 genes that were responsible for driving the pathway associations, and gene ontology analysis demonstrated enrichment for calcium transport (P=1.05×10(-)(4)). Three single nucleotide polymorphisms in solute carrier family 8, member 1 (SLC8A1), a sodium/calcium exchanger encoding NCX1, were validated in an independent Japanese ...

In a groundbreaking speech in the European Parliament in June 2005, the then British Prime Minister Tony Blair effectively signalled room for negotiation on the UK rebate in exchange for fundamental reform of the EU budget, with particular reference to the common agricultural policy. No concrete proposal was presented, but in the European Council’s Decision on the financial perspective for 2007–13 in December 2005, the Commission was invited to undertake a full review of EU budget expenditures and resources, and to report its findings in 2008–09. This review represents a unique opportunity to reshape the budget more in line with the needs of the EU. The review offers the prospect of breaking the often-vicious circle between expenditures, resources and the net balances of member states, and the budgetary paralysis engendered by old policies preventing the introduction of new initiatives. The CEPS Task Force on the EU budget began its deliberations shortly after the December 2005 Coun...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of nano-particle of selenium on liver antioxidant activity, blood cells count and IgG level in rats exposed to oxidative stress. Twenty four male rats were randomly divided into four treatments with six replicates. Treatments included of: control group gavaged and injected (ip) normal saline; T1: injected (ip) tert butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) at 0.2 mmol per kg body weight and gavaged normal saline; T2: gavaged nano selenium (0.3 mg per kg body weight) and injected (ip) normal saline, and T3: injected (ip) t-BHP (0.2 mmol per kg body weight) following gavaged nano-Selenium (0.3 mg per kg body weight). Experimental period was lasted for 35 days and administrations were done each 48 hour. Oxidative stress (T2) increased the liver activities of antioxidant enzymes and also the levels of liver enzymes released in the plasma as compared with other treatments. T3 had lower (P <0.05) enzyme activities than T2 group. T2 had the lowest (P&...

Effects of sugammadex on platelet levels and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio in morbidly obese patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy2021 •
Sugammadex is known to have minimal effects on coagulopathy. The aim of this study was to analyse the changes in platelet levels and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in preoperative and postoperative periods in morbidly obese patients. This retrospective study included a total of 86 morbidly obese patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of >40 kg/m2 and with an American Society of Anaesthesiologists Classification score (ASA) III undergoing elective laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Patient data were obtained from patient files and electronic health records system (SARUS). The patients were allocated into two groups namely sugammadex (Group S) and neostigmine (Group N). Preoperative and postoperative (12th hour) hemogram recordings of the patients were examined. Compared to preoperative levels, there was a significant decrease in the postoperative platelet and lymphocyte values of patients in Group S (p<0.001) whereas postoperative PLR values were significantly increased ...

Multicellular spheroids represent a well-established 3D model to study healthy and diseased cells in vitro. The use of conventional 3D cell culture platforms for the generation of multicellular spheroids is limited to cell types that easily self-assemble into spheroids because less adhesive cells fail to form stable aggregates. A high-precision micromoulding technique developed in our laboratory produces deep conical agarose microwell arrays that allow the cultivation of uniform multicellular aggregates, irrespective of the spheroid formation capacity of the cells. Such hydrogel arrays warrant a steady nutrient supply for several weeks, permit live volumetric measurements to monitor cell growth, enable immunohistochemical staining, fluorescence-based microscopy, and facilitate immediate harvesting of cell aggregates. This system also allows co-cultures of two distinct cell types either in direct cell-cell contact or at a distance as the hydrogel permits diffusion of soluble compound...
