Weekend trip: Poiana Brasov

Poiana Brasov is placed at approximately 15 kilometers away from Brasov Railway Station. It is a hot spot for tourists who crave a getaway deeper in the mountains, but also like to feel comfortable in a more high-end hotel. Nonetheless, there are also more affordable options if you choose to stay for a weekend.

The area is a part of Brasov city and it has been acknowledged since the 15th century for the activities which took place here, such as sheep farming. Starting from the 19th century, the location became a point of attraction for ski enthusiasts because of the great tracks and has been keeping its reputation ever since. Nowadays, it is known as one of the deluxe ski resorts of Romania.

You can get here by car on DN1E (National Road 1E) from Brasov, or with the bus number 20 from Livada Postei. The bus departs every 30 minutes from here, and the bus fare is 6 lei (1.20 euros) for a one-way ticket.

A great place to eat

If you want to try the full Romanian cuisine experience in a beautiful, authentic place, you should definitely check out Coliba Haiducilor (literal translation: Outlaws’ Hut). The environment is warm and cozy, but also lively, due to the wonderful colors, traditional patterns on carpets on the wall and… the band! The local folk band plays at times and by request and will immerse you better into the Romanian culture. Now, regarding food, it is mostly meat-based, from veal, pork, chicken, soups, starters such as eggfish, eggplant salad and deserts. If you want to try more dishes, platters would definitely satisfy you if you are travelling with a larger group of friends.

You can choose to eat inside the restaurant, or, when the weather is sunny and pleasant, you should definitely eat outside. There are plenty of tables seated near designated paths right between the trees, so the atmosphere is very serene and reminds you of a family dinner in the backyard. The restaurant is placed on Drumul Sulinar street. You can park in front, but on weekends it might get crowded, especially during lunch and dinner time.

Regarding accommodation, we highly recommend you to use booking.com, as it is the most used and reliable platform in our country, especially for popular tourist areas such as Poiana Brasov. You will find accommodation starting from 120 lei/night (25 euros) for a double room with a bathroom. For extra facilities, such as breakfast, private parking, spa and so on, the price will naturally grow, even up to 1400 lei/night (300 euros) for an apartment in a hotel. Also, the prices will vary on the position of the accommodation. If it is farther from the main road, the stay will be cheaper, but the access is usually made by car, on one-way roads usually. The good part is you will get to enjoy the silence of the forest.

Another important tip: do not venture out at night close to the forest. There is a possibility you might encounter bears.
