Michael Schumacher’s family has made the difficult decision to auction off the Formula 1 legend’s collection of watches amid his health battle.

The notoriously private family of the racing driver, who suffered a serious brain injury while skiing in 2013, have listed two custom-made watches for auction.

They include a custom Ferrari-themed watch gifted to Schumacher by his close friend Jean Todt after he won his sixth of seven world championships.

Todt has been a confidante of the family and one of the few people to have regular contact with the driver, who has not been seen in public since his accident.

A second watch, gifted to him to commemorate his seventh world championships and features custom touches including a picture of his racing helmet and the Ferrari emblem.

Auction house Christie’s is selling off the watches in Geneva next month. It is understood the pieces are expected to sell for several million dollars each.

“Christie’s expresses sincere thanks to the Schumacher Family for their trust in us and their wish to share these masterpieces of horology with other passionate collectors around the globe,” the auction house said.

“We are proud to present these iconic and unique timepieces belonging to one of the most celebrated Formula One legend. An exceptional moment, for watch and F1 enthusiasts alike.”

In 2021, Schumacher’s wife Corinna, who shares children Gina and Mick with Michael, gave insight into why fans have been given few details on her husband’s condition since his accident.

“We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond.

“And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will.

“We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.

“’Private is private’, as he always said.

“It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”
