2009: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth meet while filming 'The Last Song'

Cyrus and Hemsworth met in 2009 on the set of The Last Song, the movie adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel. Shortly after filming wrapped, the two confirmed their romance when they had a PDA-filled goodbye at the airport.

Actor Alex Emanuel, who watched their "full-on make out," said the ultra-romantic exchange "was like a scene out of an old movie where the guy's getting on a train and they're saying their goodbyes."

August 2010: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth break up

It wasn't all smooth sailing and epic, big-screen-worthy goodbyes for the couple. In August 2010, Hemsworth's representative confirmed to PEOPLE that he and Cyrus had split after months of breakup rumors.

September 11, 2010: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth get back together

Less than one month after Hemsworth's representative said he was no longer dating Cyrus, the former couple were spotted together grabbing lunch and coffee to go in L.A.

"Miley and Liam kept smiling and seemed to really enjoy their afternoon together," an eyewitness said of the two. "They acted like they had missed each other, kept chatting and seemed to be catching up. They definitely seemed like a couple again."

Later that month, the pair were seen sharing cuddles and whispers while having dinner in Brentwood, California.

November 2010: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth break up (again)

Cyrus and Hemsworth were "off again" in early November 2010, according to a source.

"Their on- and off-again relationship is currently off," the source told PEOPLE. "But you never know with Miley and Liam. They could be back on at some point."

"There was no drama," another source added. "The relationship just ran its course. They were good friends first and remain friends."

May 31, 2012: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth get engaged

After three years as an on-again, off-again couple, Hemsworth proposed to Cyrus in 2012 with a 3.5-carat ring from Neil Lane. "I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam," Cyrus told PEOPLE at the time.

A source told PEOPLE the engagement had the blessing of Cyrus' famous family. "Billy Ray loves Liam. He's happy his daughter has found the right guy," the source said, adding that Hemsworth has spent a lot of time with her family, barbecuing together. "The whole family loves Liam."

March 2013: Breakup rumors swirl around Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's engagement

The engagement wasn't all about cake tastings and dress fittings, however: the two were plagued by rumors of an impending breakup. In early March, Cyrus was spotted in L.A. with her engagement ring off.

Despite it all, Cyrus insisted on Twitter on March 6 that she did not end her engagement to Hemsworth.

"I am so sick of La. And sick of the lies that come with it," she posted. "I didn't call off my wedding. Taking a break from social media. #draining"

Later that month, Cyrus posted photos of herself with her ring back on.

April 2013: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth postpone their wedding

The chatter of Cyrus and Hemsworth's relationship being on the rocks was fueled even more in April when the stars postponed their wedding. Though they never announced an official date, the couple originally intended to marry in summer 2013.

However, a source told PEOPLE that the couple did not break up. "They're still engaged and living together," said the source. "They just realized that there is no rush with the wedding and that it's better that they wait a bit."

"They don't want to get married until they figure out their problems," said another source. "But Miley is very worried about losing Liam. She is crazy about him."

September 16, 2013: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth call off their engagement

Months of rumors came to a head in September 2013 when the couple unfollowed each other on Twitter. Two days later, Cyrus and Hemsworth confirmed they were ending their engagement.

As many suspected, the split had been a long time coming: Cyrus discussed writing "Drive," a breakup anthem on her album Bangerz, as early as Valentine's Day that year.

2013: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth move on

Following their breakup, Cyrus spoke to Ellen DeGeneres about how the music on her album Bangerz, released on Sept. 30, 2013, chronicled her up-and-down relationship with Hemsworth.

In a December 2013 interview with Barbara Walters, Cyrus said she was looking forward to a stress-free future: "Now, I just feel like I can actually be happy."

That included a rumored dalliance with Benji Madden and a relationship with Patrick Schwarzenegger. And she wasn't the only one rebounding – Hemsworth was spotted locking lips with Mexican singer-actress Eiza Gonzalez days after the split.

2014-2015: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth talk about their former relationship

Months after their breakup, the two still spoke favorably about each other. A source told PEOPLE that "despite them constantly fighting before the split, Miley always said Liam is the love of her life."

In the November 2015 issue of Men's Journal, Hemsworth commented on his relationship with Cyrus, "We were together five years, so I don't think those feelings will ever change."

January 3, 2016: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are rumored to be back together

In January 2016, just a few days after New Year's Eve, the stars were spotted at the Falls Music Festival in Hemsworth's native Australia. Based on the kisses they were seen sharing, it was obvious to onlookers the pair was more than friends.

Cyrus and Hemsworth even hung with Liam's older brother Chris and his wife, Elsa Pataky.

January 18, 2016: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are engaged again

Later, in January 2016, PEOPLE confirmed that Cyrus and Hemsworth's engagement was back on after Cyrus posted a photo on Instagram showing her wearing her engagement ring again.

"Miley is beyond happy to be engaged to Liam again," a source told PEOPLE. "It might seem sudden, but they have been very close for the past few months."

April 28, 2016: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth visit Hemsworth's parents in Australia

Cyrus and Hemsworth were spotted with Hemsworth's parents, Craig and Leonie, at lunch in Byron Bay, Australia, in April 2016. Although the couple didn't show any PDA, Cyrus was spotted wearing the same engagement ring she received before they split in 2013.

Later that day, the singer was pictured shopping at a local boutique with Hemsworth's sister-in-law, Pataky.

July 25, 2016: Miley Cyrus shows off another ring from Liam Hemsworth

On July 25, the singer uploaded an Instagram photo of herself —with a new addition to her ring finger — lounging at the pool with her friend. The ring was a gold band set with small diamonds.

The upgraded bling hinted at an engagement, with the two spending time together on date nights and holiday vacations.

November 23, 2016: Liam Hemsworth wishes Miley Cyrus a happy 24th birthday

On Cyrus' 24th birthday in November, Hemsworth gifted his "little angel" a brightly adorned gift box and honored his fiancée on social media.

"Happiest birthday to my favorite little angel!" The singer responded on Instagram, writing: "Best bday evaaaaaa!!!!!!! Thank you my loooooove."

December 21, 2016: Liam Hemsworth joins Miley Cyrus' family for Christmas

Hemsworth joined in on the Cyrus holiday fun by joining the performer and her family for a special celebration a few days before Dec. 25.

Brandi, Cyrus' mother, posted a family photo (including Hemsworth) on Instagram, captioning the image, "Cyrus fam Christmas in full swing."

It was Cyrus' turn to celebrate her leading man when he turned 27 — with none other than a weed-themed party. "Happiest birthday EVER to my favorite being EVER EVER EVER!" Cyrus captioned the photo.

May 2017: Miley Cyrus talks about having to "refall" back in love with Liam Hemsworth

In a revealing interview with Billboard, Cyrus revealed that following her breakup with Hemsworth, she was "so immersed in work" to find herself again. "I needed to change so much. And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard," Cyrus recalled. "Suddenly, you're like, 'I don't recognize you anymore.' We had to refall for each other."

And they did just that: At the time, the couple shared a Malibu property with their seven dogs, two pigs and two miniature horses.

September 2017: Miley Cyrus says she isn't yet "envisioning marriage" with Liam Hemsworth

In a September 2017 interview with The Sun on Sunday newspaper, Cyrus said she wasn't yet "envisioning marriage."

January 16, 2018: Chris Hemsworth shuts down rumors that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth secretly married

Rumors began to circulate in early 2018 that the couple had secretly married to ring in the new year, but Hemsworth's older brother, Chris, confirmed that Cyrus was "not officially" a member of the family — yet.

The Thor: Ragnarok actor joked to SiriusXM that he often tried to get the Disney Channel alum to sing. "I always just expected her to put on a show and bang a few songs out, but she never does ... I'm insisting constantly. I'm like, 'When's the performance coming?' But she's just a lot of fun."

November 23, 2018: Liam Hemsworth wishes Miley Cyrus a happy 26th birthday

In November 2018, after the house Cyrus and Hemsworth shared burned down during the devastating California fires, the singer and her family celebrated her 26th birthday with cake and drinks.

"Happy birthday to my sweet girl," the Hunger Games star wrote of Cyrus in a photo showing the singer surrounded by colorful balloons while holding her dog. "You're more precious than ever. So thankful to have you in my life."

December 23, 2018: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are rumored to have wed

On Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018, just days before Christmas, Hemsworth's close friend Conrad Carr posted a video on his Instagram story of the actor and his brothers, Chris and Luke, doing a "shotski" with Mr. and Mrs. balloons in the background.

Another photo showed Cyrus and Hemsworth — dressed in traditional white and a tux — in front of cake and cupcakes, with the singer's mom Tish in the frame.

December 26, 2018: Miley Cyrus confirms she and Liam Hemsworth are married

On December 26, Cyrus shared black-and-white portraits from their wedding day on Instagram, confirming that the couple tied the knot three days earlier.

Cyrus captioned the photos of her embracing Hemsworth: "12.23.18" and "10 years later ….." In the snapshot of the newlyweds kissing, the singer wrote: "This is probably our one – millionth kiss."

Hemsworth also shared the same photo, writing, "My love."

August 10, 2019: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth separate

On Aug. 10, Cyrus' rep exclusively confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple had split. "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time," the rep said in a statement.

The rep continued in the statement: "Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy."

Three days later, Hemsworth addressed the separation in an Instagram post, writing, "Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated, and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward."

August 21, 2019: Liam Hemsworth files for divorce from Miley Cyrus

Though PEOPLE reported on Aug. 13 that Cyrus was not rushing to divorce Hemsworth, Hemsworth filed for divorce just eight days later, citing "irreconcilable differences."

Later that day, a source close to Cyrus told PEOPLE that the singer "didn't expect" Hemsworth to file for divorce and was "a bit disappointed" but that she was "still doing well and has obviously moved on as well."

December 24, 2019: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth settle their divorce

Nearly a year after Cyrus and Hemsworth married, TMZ and Entertainment Tonight reported that the former couple settled their divorce. The couple agreed to divide their property, with Cyrus retaining custody of their pets.

"Miley is relieved that she and Liam reached an agreement when it comes to the divorce," a Cyrus source told PEOPLE two days after the settlement. "She just wants to move on."

February 22, 2020: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are officially divorced

On Jan. 28, 2020, Cyrus and Hemsworth finalized their divorce, declaring the two legally single on Feb. 22.

The divorce process was accelerated because there were no "community property assets or liabilities" created during their marriage and neither Hemsworth or Cyrus sought spousal support, according to the court papers.

However, a week after the divorce was finalized, the former couple attended the same pre-Oscars bash on Feb. 7, 2020.

Months after their divorce was finalized, Cyrus sat for an interview on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast and shared that going through the divorce with Hemsworth in the public eye "f------ sucked."

January 13, 2023: Miley Cyrus releases single "Flowers," which fans speculate is about Liam Hemsworth

Cyrus released her song "Flowers," which contains lyrics that look back on a past relationship. In the song, the Hannah Montana alum sings about how everything this ex-partner did for her, she can do for herself.

March 10, 2023: Fans speculate Miley Cyrus accusing Liam Hemsworth of cheating in her song "Muddy Feet"

After Cyrus released her album Endless Summer Vacation, fans on Twitter speculated that her song "Muddy Feet" accused Hemsworth of cheating.

In the song, Cyrus sings about smelling perfume that doesn't belong to her on her partner.

"And you smell like perfume that I didn't purchase/Now I know why you've been closing the curtains/Get the f--- out of my house," the former Disney star sings.

August 29, 2023: Miley Cyrus says the Malibu house she shared with Liam Hemsworth had "so much magic"

In a TikTok video, Cyrus reminisced about making her first solo record, Meet Miley Cyrus, in the Malibu house she'd eventually share with Hemsworth.

"I was working with a producer in Malibu that lived in a house in Ramirez Canyon, which I would've never known 15 years later I would be living in that house, which would eventually burn down," she said, referring to the 2018 wildfires. "That house had so much magic to it. It ended up really changing my life."
