Philip Treacy Busy Designing Hats for Royal Wedding – But for Whom?

With eight days to go to the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William, hat-maker to the stars Philip Treacy is swamped.

“People came to see me as soon as the invites went out,” Treacy, 43, tells Style.com. “Most will have three or four fittings because, of course, it has to be right; something like a billion people will see them on the day.”

And while he assures fans there will be a selection of Philip Treacy hats bobbing in the sea of guests at the royal wedding, he’s not saying who exactly will be wearing them. His royal connections are strong, though – Treacy designed Camilla Parker Bowles’s dramatic feathered fascinator when she married Prince Charles in 2005 – so naturally there’s been speculation he’ll be designing for the bride herself this time around.

“I’m designing hats for queens, princesses and celebrities; you definitely won’t miss them on the big day” is all he will say on that topic, however, adding that royal weddings are “a real hat moment.”

While he won’t be attending the April 29 affair, Treacy is still holding on to the memory of attending Prince Charles’s 2005 wedding.

“It was the most interesting day of my life,” he says. “I watched Princess Diana’s wedding as a boy, so to see the future Queen of England coming round the corner towards me in one of my hats was just amazing.”

Though he’s designed hats for the Harry Potter movies, the Irish-born milliner will always have a soft spot for royalty, he says. “I design for royalty throughout the world because royals actually wear hats,” Treacy explains. “They are the true hat-wearers of the 21st century, the ultimate influencers who keep the millinery business going.”
