Joanna Lumley teases possible Coronation Street return

Dame Joanna Lumley has teased a possible return to Coronation Street over 50 years since her last appearance.

The star, best known for her roles in Absolutely Fabulous and Finding Alice, appeared on the soap back in 1973 as Elaine Perkins, with the character turning down Ken Barlow’s (William Roache) offer of marriage.

Lumley was reportedly close to returning back in 2009, and revealed on The One Show (Tuesday 2 January) that she would still be open to reprising her role in the future.

“I write every year so is there any chance?” she quipped. “I was hoping to get back into Ken Barlow’s range again but anyway, we’ll wait and see. I’ve always said: ‘Yes, I’d come back like a shot.’”

Whilst Lumley could make a sensational return as Elaine, one character who has re-entered Weatherfield in recent weeks is Damon Hay, with the criminal attempting to enact revenge on Adam Barlow whilst winning the attention of Sarah.

The character had Adam in the palm of his hand after a kidnapping plot came through, but elected to let him go, with actor Ciarán Griffiths teasing that his character could be changing his ways.

“It’s good to show he's got a bit of a heart as well,” he said. “I’m enjoying getting to know him a bit more and seeing he’s a bit more human. I like playing the softer side to him, although I'm not too keen on the romantic stuff.

“I cringe at myself sometimes, I struggle to keep a straight face with it. I like playing Damon’s edgier side but it’s also great playing the fun side to him as well. We see him trying to get some legitimate deals going this time and I’m enjoying playing that too.”
