In 1891, Gauguin traveled to Tahiti, where he spent two years living among the indigenous people and immersing himself in their culture. He created a series of paintings and woodcuts that depicted the people and landscapes of the South Pacific in a bold, colorful style that was unlike anything seen before in Western art.
