Prime Arena A national football arena was always a dream for Bucharesters. We had to promise UEFA and to fight to host the Europa League Final, on May 9, to get finished with the new stadium. The new National Arena is a football stadium just completed in Bucharest, in the Lia Manoliu Sports Complex. Finished mid-2011, it usually hosts Romania national football team’s games, the Romania Cup, and the Romanian Supercup finals. The UEFA Europa League 20112012 final, played in Bucharest on May 9, made the new stadium famous in Europe. The two finalists first competed in 1921 but Athletic Club and Club Atlético de Madrid’s rivalry gain a new dimension for their meeting in the UEFA Europa League final. For Atlético Madrid, the final has been their 100th UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League appearance. And their fourth visit in Bucharest was a lucky one. So, now it is the time to welcome you on the arena for music concerts! The legendary Romanian rock band Iris, probably the Romanian band with the most fans, will go on stage for the first concert at the National Arena, on June 22. The event celebrates 35 years in activity for Iris. Let’s see how it looks a full National Arena for a rock concert! The concert, prepared already for a couple of months, will be a technical superproduction, with a 70 meters wide stage and a multimedia show. Recorded in HD by 18 cameras the concert will be available soon after the concert. The anniversary concert on June 22, organized by FunTime Production in partnership with the Bucharest Municipality, will probably start at 20:30 (acces starts at 17:00) and will last about three hours. Tickets cost 50, 75 and 100 Lei and 150 Lei for a limited number of VIP seats. Other details on the official website - www.iris35ani.ro. Iris concert it’s an anniversary one, that’s why they have no opening act, instead a couple of special guests – the soprano Felicia Filip and the rapper Puya. The organizers also intend to allow many children from rural or underprivileged families to enter for the concert for free. Although surveys on such issues are not done in romania, Iris is certainly the most beloved rock group from the country, a living legend of the Romanian music, which, in their 35-year music career, kept loyal their audience and won, over time, more and more fans. In 2007, Iris at their 30 years celebration, the concert on Baneasa Airport has been attended by more than 15,000 fans. Many are the mega-successes of the group over the years, from a discography with 16 LPs, 3 singles and 2 DVDs. Starting with 1977, Iris had over 5.000 shows, in front of a number of spectators equivalent with at least a third of Romania’s population! The actual components of the band are: Cristi Minculescu (voice), Boro (bass), Relu Marin (keyboards), Nelu Dumitrescu (drums), Valter Popa (guitar). Let’s enjoy real rock, by Iris! But Iris is only opening the ball. As already confirmed on the official site of the artist, Lady Gaga concert in Romania is certain! Lady Gaga will have a grand show on August 16, concert included in The Born This Way Ball World Tour, which debuted on April 27 in South Korea and includes 21 other European cities. During this now tour, she will perform songs from her latest album, Born This Way, and tracks included on the albums The Fame and The Fame Monster. In Europe, Lady Gaga is accompanied by the band The Darkness, recently reunited, and by Lady Starlight. The Born This Way Ball, the third tour from the artist’s career, is expected to be one of the most spectacular tours in the music history, Gaga preparing for her fans a new concept, a new scene and a new production. Red Hot Chili Peppers concert, which follows, registered record sales in Romania, all tickets available on the lawn being very close to sold-out. The event is scheduled to take place on August 31. And, between so much music, a little football – on July 14 is scheduled the Romanian Supercup, a game which will open the new season, between the champion, CFR Cluj and the Romania’s Cup, Dinamo. Now we can say we have a prime arena in Bucharest!

cover story

M E H E D I N T I, the Place where the Danube Wanted to Arrive! If you check the web you find that Mehedinti is a county of Romania, mostly located in the historical province of Oltenia, with one municipality (Orsova) and three communes (Dubova, Eselnita and Svinita) located in the Banat area. The county seat is Drobeta-Turnu Severin. Low information make from this area, the place where Danube chose to enter Romania, a place where tourists are still expected.

Although less known, Mehedinti county is considered one of the most beautiful places in Romania, while for many is hard even to locate it on the map. Mehedinti, with its county seat Drobeta Turnu Severin, or the Clisura along the Danube, or the Ponoarele area, can become real alternatives for Romanians and foreigners who want to discover new places in Romania. The authorities and the business people in the county understand the benefits it would bring an increased number of tourists in the area and are already doing many things for a sustainable development, but the area needs much more support. A discussion with the county authorities brought us conflicting information. Marius Balu, Mehedinti County Council president until the elections on June 10, is proud of the diversity of landforms, impressive in the area, where “only the see is missing”. In Mehedinti you find a wonderful picture: mountains with steep ramparts up to 1,500 meters, closing to the West the South Carpathians, and spectacular forms of relief, hills, plateau areas, plains, lakes, rivers and, especially, “the Danube, a bonding of the country with Europe“. Constantin Gheorghe, Drobeta Turnu Severin municipality mayor, said that until recently the tourists reached the city with difficulty because of the poor roads. In the last two years they have invested most in the roads. The County Council and the City Hall Drobeta Turnu Severin accessed about 200 6 Bucuresti what, where, when

www.bucurestiwww.ro

million Euros from European funds, amounts allocated to the county’s development. Among the major projects undertaken by the two institutions are included the water supply and sewerage, waste management, rehabilitation of county roads, and those aimed at restoration of tourist attractions. Between the attractions, the Cultural Palace - former Teodor Costescu Theater, the Medieval Fortress of Severin and the Iron Gates Region Museum which includes the remains of the Bridge of Trajan, symbol of the city, are in the process of restoration and rehabilitation. In part by the end of this year, plus the rehabilitation of the Water Castel and the rest next year, these projects will be completed, being financed from European funds. These works are completed by a program funded from the local budget for the rehabilitation of the parking lots, parks, building playgrounds for children, retirement homes, wells, roundabouts, planting trees... that will change much the city’s appearance. When these will be finalized, the authorities hope that increasing the number of tourists visiting the city has the chance to become reality. The authorities want to increase the number of visitors, but need to think about a strategy to attract more people to spend their holidays in this area. From the same discussion we learned that last year came in the Danube Clisura area about 1,500 tourists a week. Meanwhile, things have evolved. For Christmas or New Year’s Eve all the hotels and boarding places

were occupied long before. Also they think about the foreigners coming on the Danube, on cruise ships. About 90,000 tourists pass the river annually, but few liners stop. To stop in the future in Drobeta Turnu Severin the docking points for the vessels need to be improved and also the attractions in the area, because from Belgrade down the Danube this is the biggest problem of all the cities on the Danube river. The owners of the guesthouses that were built in the recent years on the river in the area called Clisura Danube also hope to increase so their occupancy rate for the whole year. Also in order to create a European attraction there is a special project for Simian Island, which could become a European center of the Danube. For this project the authorities are still looking for investors for a publicprivate partnership. The city is ready to provide the infrastructure on the island. Thus, Decebal and Trajan statues, looking at the passers in the city park, would have a chance to see a more diverse crowd, coming from Romania and from Europe to see the area where the Romans crossed the river to conquer Dacia. The city of Drobeta-Turnu Severin offer to its visitors unique places in Europe: the ruins of Trajan’s first bridge over the Danube, the Roman Fort, the Medieval Fortress of Severin. The energetic sector is highly developed in the county, on the Danube being two big hydro electrical power plants (Iron Gates I and Iron Gates II), and North-East Drobeta Turnu Severin there is a heavy water complex. Visiting Danube’s Iron Gates it’s an impressive experience, the modern technology which transforms the river’s power into electrical energy attracting children, students and many other tourists. The tourists who arrive in Mehedinti may try a ride on the Danube shore or go on a cruise by boat on the river. Scheduled ships are not yet, but smaller or bigger ships can be rented for a cruise on the route between Orsova and the Great Boilers of the Danube, a cruise during you can enjoy the view but you can even dine on board. Moving upstream on the Danube you can not miss the Tabula Trajana inscription, located on the Serbian bank, reminiscent of the way carved in stone by the Romans in 100, to move troops on the river, avoiding the uncertain and unprepared mountains area. Tabula Trajana was raised from the original position with 25 meters to be saved from the waters of the lake and is part of UNESCO heritage. On the Romanian bank, nearly facing Tabula Trajana, Decebal Rex statue deserves special attention. Sculptured in a cliff and representing the king Decebal, this is one of the attractions in Mehedinti county. The 55 meters high statue is on the rocky shore of the Danube, between localities Dubova and Eselnita, and is the highest stone sculpture in Europe. The businessman and historian Iosif Constantin Dragan was the one who promoted and financed the idea of this work performed between 1994-2004, aiming to demonstrate the contribution of the Romanians to the www.bucurestiwww.ro

formation of the European culture, based on the premise that the cultural identity of the Romanians can be defined first of all through its Daco-Thracian component. Those who look a little left of Decebal Rex can not miss Mraconia monastery, located in the beautiful gorge on the river about 15 km from Orsova, also raised from the Danube, when the lake was filled. The cruise ends before the Great Boilers, impressive, but which can be crossed by boats and barges only after a wellestablished schedule, only on one fairway. While navigating the Danube Gorge, the Romanian bank is called the Danube Clisura, between Moldova Noua and Gura Vaii, the most picturesque part of it being the area from Orsova to the Great Boilers of the Danube. Here were built the majority of the holiday homes and guesthouses in the county, some owners being also able to access European funds for initial construction or for expansion. Between Dubova and Eselnita there are situated the most popular guesthouses. Gherghina Tanasie, owns the four star guesthouse Danubiana, with a capacity of 17 beds. She has invested 200,000 Euros in this pension built on the Danube, also accessing European funds. She is satisfied by the number of tourists only from the months from June to August and believes that if the area would be better promoted the tourism should increase also in the rest of the year. She complains that although the area is very beautiful and attracts many tourists, it is not promoted enough yet. From the local authorities she expects practical things, such as the building of a sidewalk, so that visitors can walk, or the Decebal Rex statue to be illuminated, so visible for tourists coming in the evening. Another example is Melba pension, in which the owners invested 650,000 Euros, of which 250,000 from European money, with has 10 rooms and is expanding with other 5. September and Ancora are other places that offer modern accommodation at prices ranging from Lei 150 per night for a double room and Lei 250 for an apartment. Here, accommodation is modern, pools and boats for cruises await tourists, and the menu consists of fresh products specific to the area, assorted with the famous Vanju Mare wine, recently international medalist. Once arrived in the area you have plenty to see, beautiful landscapes, places that talk about the Romanian history and holy places with spiritual charge. The county is full of spirituality, and tourists have the opportunity to visit the Monastery of Saint Ana, Vodita, Gura Motrului, Topolnita, Baia de Arama, Cerneti, or Mraconia, which I have mentioned before. For those who want to walk, some attractions are available, which include Mehedinti Plateau Geopark, Iron Gates National Park, Domogled National Park Cerna Valley, along with other reserves and natural monuments of the Mehedinti county. If in the North-West of the county there are the Mehedinti Mountains with heights up to 1,500 m, part of the Western end of the Southern Carpathians, the heights decrease 8

towards the East, passing through the hills to a high plain - the Western end of the Romanian Plain. In the South the Danube flows, forming a wide valley, with channels and ponds. Another important river is the Motru, and also Cerna River forming a passage between the Oltenia and the Banat regions. The plate between Cerna and Motru rivers it’s known as one of the important karst areas in Europe. An important point in the area is Ponoarele, a commune composed of fifteen villages. The commune has many natural monuments, including God’s Bridge (Podul lui Dumnezeu), Bulba Cave, Lapiezuri Plain, Zaton Lake, Ponoarele Cave, Topolnita Cave, the Valley of the Mills and the Lilac forest, Baluta Notch. In Ponoarele God was good with its residents, offering them much more than in other places, and the people of the place return this good thoughts to all the visitors in the area, with fresh and special products for their meals and nice Romanian folklorique music and dances. We arrived in Mehedinti, in places which I haven’t visited for a long time, invited by the energetic Beatrice Chiriac and Force Tourism Association, who made a new magazine-catalog, in Romania series, Force Tourism - Business & Tourism Magazine, Severin Municipality edition, to promote the economic, geographical, historical and cultural potential of the Mehedinti county. The area is at least as attractive for tourism as the Coast or the Prahova valley, certainly a different corner of the country! We left for Bucharest with the clear thought that we have to come back to this places!

Thomas Cook returns on the Romanian Coast Thomas Cook - Neckermann, second largest tour operator group in Germany signed contracts for all inclusive services of 50 rooms within hotels Comandor and Amiral in Mamaia, owned by Unita Turism, and of 30 rooms within Europa Hotel in Eforie Nord. Also, the German tour operator signed all inclusive contracts with the 5-star hotel Saturn in the homonym resort, owned by THR Marea Neagra, a company which manages all the seaside hotels owned by SIF Transilvania. Thomas Cook - Neckermann is represented in Romania by Karpaten Turism, managed by Gheorghe Marginean. EUROPAfest Artists at From Mount Athos the Elisabeta Palace to Grand Hotel Continental Mid-May, EUROPAfest artists were invited to the Elisabeta Palace. continuing the tradition of the annual meetings of artists present in the festival and the Romanian Royal House. Jazz, blues, pop and classical music musicians from across the continent, which have captivated Bucharest starting with May 4, brought little of their music and their creative spirit at the Elisabeta Royal Palace.

Grand Hotel Continental held on May 4, in partnership with Mount Athos Area, an authentic dinner with Mount Athos cuisine dishes. The action is part of the gastronomic events with the generic Gourmet Area Mount Athos annually held during May 15 to June 15. The initiator of this project is Tourism Organization of Mount Athos, secular entity closely related to the only monastic republic in the world. The dinner was prepared under the careful guidance of the monk Epiphany Mylopotaminos, the most famous chef of the 22 Orthodox monasteries of Mount Athos. Monk, who is for 38 years at Athos, is the Mylopotamos hermitage abbot, which belongs to the oldest monasteries of the Mountain - Great Lavra. The monk published in 2010 the only cookbook of Mount Athos, already translated into Russian, English and German and currently under editing in Romanian.

The program prepared by the EUROPAfest organizers reflected the high artistic level of the participants in the festival. The audience could hear a virtuoso interpretation of one of the Paganini caprices to the trumpet and the Queen’s March, which is usually sung at the entrance of the crowned heads. Merel Vercammen, the beautiful Dutch, managed to captivate the audience through an evolution at its best.

Further, the only Romanian presence in the international competition of jazz Bucharest International Jazz Competition, Loungerie II, offered a novel interpretation of the Royal Anthem of Romania, followed by a processing in personal style, of an emotional and moving piece of Maria Tanase - “Until I Loved You “. We saw an extraordinary meeting in which they shared smiles and handshakes, talks with the musicians, they took pictures, to the great joy and honor of all those who participated. Since 2005, EUROPAfest takes place under the patronage of Their Royal Highnesses Princess Margareta and Prince Radu. Confident in the power of music to transcend beyond barriers and change for the better the young generation, the royal family supports the concept of the festival. EUROPAfest annually gathers more than 300 musicians from 45 countries. 10

The menu presented at the Grand Hotel Continental consisted of dishes prepared after authentic recipes from Mount Athos cuisine: octopus soup, salad with crithmum maritimum from Mount Athos Bay, code with zucchini and halva of semolina with fruits from the forest of Aristotle. The dinner was ennobled with bio wine brought by the monk and made from the Athos vineyards, bearing Mylopotamos brand: Lefkó (dry white wine, with green apple flavor, from Muscat of Alexandria and Roditis grapes), Inómeli (medium dry red wine, only from Muscat Hamburg grapes), Erithró (dark red wine, with rich and mature taste, but with a delicate bouquet), Nama (sweet and aromatic red wine, from Muscat of Alexandria and Merlot grapes). Mount Athos cuisine is special and unique in the world. The diet of the 1,500 monks, among whom are many Romanians, is based on vegetable and fish dishes. Because these healthy menus the monks rarely get sick and they have a long life. How to cook food is unique: wood fire, pottery, biological materials from the gardens and hills of the Holy Mountain. The fish and seafood from the Holy Mountain are recognized for their special taste. The unique taste is because the waters are deep, pure and crossed by purifier marine currents. Seafood is caught in very deep water with the highest salt content of all the seas of Greece.

THE COTROCENI PALACE

It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reflect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides offices, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM

Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in fine weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. Visiting hours: Nov.-Apr.: 09:00 - 17:00., May-Oct.: 09:00 19:00, every day, including Monday THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART

The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. Visiting hours: Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (May - September) 10 a.m - 6 p.m. (October - April) Closed: Monday, Tuesday THE OLD ROYAL COURT

During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

what, where, when

Old department stores in Bucharest are in a transition period. Besides specialized departments, it is not unusual to find a large number of small private “Turkish-bazaar” type stands inside. Crowded but convenient because of their diversity, the Bucharest department stores offer low- to mid- sometimes even high- quality products. Galeriile Victoria 6D : 17, Calea Victoriei Bucur Obor: 2, Soseaua Colentina SUPERMARKETS There are stores in each section of town that present a complete range of products, from European to American, Arabian and Asian. Many world-wide brands are available. Prices may differ slightly because of the location of the store (downtown – periphery) or the availability of products. MARKETS IN BUCHAREST

One of the unique and more pleasurable forms of food shopping in Bucharest are the outdoor markets. Due to transportation difficulties, supplies are often copious at one market and non-existent at another. Of the markets listed here, Amzei market has the best selection and prices. It is advisable to bring your own shopping bags when shopping at the outdoor markets.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

• LUDWIG GELOBTER

Dear Reader, Here in the USA we have been in the Presidential election cycle since mid 2011, by the time the election actually takes place on November 6 it will have gone on for over a year. Now that the Republican Party has essentially selected its candidate, George Romney, to oppose President Barack Obama, the real battle has begun. I have given some thought to the differences between the political systems of Romania, and the USA. In the US we have essentially a two party system. While small other parties can and do exist, they are not significant, and rarely elect even candidates for local office. In Romania there are 6 parties which have elected representatives to the Parliament, in addition there mandated representatives of ethnic minorities, as well as a further 9 or more, smaller political parties. While our Democratic and Republican parties are generally regarded as more “liberal” left leaning”, and “conservative”, respectively, those terms are not very well defined. Every four years the candidates for President define the meaning of those labels and largely control the development of each Party’s “platform” so that the ideas put forth will help them get elected. It is the candidate who dominates the ideas. While the US Congress is divided into Republicans and Democrats, with a rare “independent” in

the mix, in fact, within each Party there is a wide ranging ideological spectrum, and little intra-party discipline. In Romania, each Party puts forward a candidate who, they believe best combines the Party’s ideology with potential electability. While a candidates personality surely influences voters, Romanians mostly vote for a Party and the ideas it proposes, while Americans vote primarily for the Candidate, though somewhat influenced by the Party label. As media have changed, and television has become a major means of campaigning, money is playing a major role in elections I the USA, and increasingly so in Romania. People’s belief in the importance of their vote, and thus the percentage of eligible voters who actually declined steadily in the USA since 1968, until 2008, when the candidacy of Barack Obama lead to increased participation. That has been mirrored in Romania, where I recall everybody going to vote in 1994, while the turnout barely reached 50% in the most recent Presidential election. With the general dissatisfaction with the austerity measures imposed especially over the past year, it will be interesting to see if that will be reflected in the voter turn-out in the parliamentary elections now scheduled for November of this year. For you, the visitor, not concerned with politics early summer is a great time to visit the Romanian country side before the vacationing crowds gather. So take a day trip to Prahova Valley, or just Snagov if time is short, or at easy go for a walk in one of our many parks. Enjoy Bucharest. Ludwig Gelobter, Publisher lgelobter@hotmail.com
