News flash! Load shedding schedules in next week's publication

No room to move

Just how many of these shipping containers are being stored in Cape Town? Where did they all come from and where are they going? Is the storage space in Cape Town close to capacity, such as this lot near Killarney racetrack? Read TygerBurger next week for an in depth look into what this means for the public and for the local economy. PHOTO: DAVE COLINS

NONPROFIT: FRIENDS WHO WANTED TO HELP OTHERS NOW FACE EACH OTHER IN COURT

Spat over safe house ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

A

spat between Richwood’s Brenda Faught and chairperson of a Milnerton non-profit organisation (NPO), Charmaine Parreira, is turning ugly. Meanwhile, the NPO Reaching out to Others is threatening to implode if multiple issues between Faught and Parreira cannot be resolved. Where the two once shared the dream of

making life easier for those in need and considered one another friends, they are now fighting one another in court. More than a year ago Parreira and the people she helps, which include pensioners, were led to believe they could use Faught and her ex-husband’s house in Richwood as a safe haven. They showed up at the house, and according to Faught the gate was closed so they proceeded to throw all their belongings over the wall.

It was raining that day and Faught decided to open the gate, something she now describes as the “worst mistake of my life”. Soon just under 20 people lived in the house with Faught. “We had an agreement they would only stay for two or three months, but they still live there today,” says Faught. “They totally destroyed my home. They made a workshop out of it and it now looks absolutely disgusting.” According to her she now has a large un-

paid utilities bill (including an approximate R40 000 water bill) and a “filthy” house in which drugs are being used. Parreira fumes when she hears these allegations. “What?” she exclaims. “She owed R30 000 on that water bill before we even moved in! The agreement was that we pay water and electricity, which we have done, but since August last year we’ve had to make do with a trickle of water, since it has virtually been cut off. V To page 2.

And then as far as the drugs go,” she takes a deep breath, clearly incensed, “has she got the nerve and audacity to say that? That woman and her son sit with the people smoking dagga. I had to turn a blind eye because it wasn’t my house, but hers.” On Monday the two met in court over charges of assault, theft and intimidation. According to a relieved Faught, these charges were thrown out of court. She does, however, still have charges of theft against her that were made by Parreira in Atlantis. Faught, her son, and Parreira’s NPO have been working land on a Mamre state farm. This venture has been going well for the NPO, with funds from several fund-raisers being invested in equipment to turn their agricultural efforts into profit. The equipment, such as donated gas bottles and solar panelling, were stored in a Wendy house on the property. According to Parreira, only she, Faught and Faught’s son had keys to the Wendy house. “After Brenda and I had an argument, I went to the farm two weeks later and saw several items were missing. There were no signs of a break-in. I asked her son where my stuff was, and her son turned to me and

I have three witnesses to testify to that,” says Parreira. She immediately opened a case of theft in Atlantis. “Daar was net een klein probleem – die geld was by die Waterfront by ’n vrou. Ek skat dit was so R300 000.”

Dive unit boosted by addition of new boat One of its areas of expertise is a dive unit with staff who are fully trained as divers. The engines of the newly acquired rescue rubber boat are new-generation and have a 95-litre fuel tank capacity. The boat can accommodate six crew with their diving gear, multiple patients, and is rigged to do resuscitation (CPR) on board. Currently the unit consists of 24 qualified divers and 10 skippers and this year the City will boost the staff complement by training an additional 10 divers and 10 skippers. The new vessel will add to the unit’s current fleet of two rubber ducks, three jet-skis

and an aluminum boat that is used on inland water bodies and in flooding situations where debris might cause damage to a rubber-hulled boat. The new boat will bring the tally of rubber ducks to three. “We have invested quite heavily in our specialised services so that we can offer the best possible service to our residents. This is but the latest example of our efforts and shows our commitment to creating a safer city by equipping and training our staff to deal with whatever situations may arise,” says mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith.

Local schools honoured for top matric marks ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

Parklands College and Bloubergrant High School were both honoured at the recent 2014 National Senior Certificate Awards. In the Excellence in Academic Performance category, Parklands College excelled by finishing in 18th position in the province and in the category of Greatest increase in the percentage of Bachelor’s passes, Bloubergrant High School finished in fourth place. As a result Parklands received R10 000 and Bloubergrant received R15 000 for the purpose of teaching and learning support material. “No outstanding results come without hard work,” said Western Cape education minister, Debbie Schäfer, at the award ceremony “I would like to thank all the teachers, principals, district officials and their support teams for their hard work and commitment to education in the Western Cape.” This is the third year in a row that Parklands College was acknowledged as one of the Top 20 schools in the province. “The criteria used for placing on this merit list are the pass rate, the percentage Bachelor Degree (BD) passes and the percentage mathematics passes. It is indeed an incredible achievement to be singled out from around 400 secondary schools in the Western Cape,” says Parklands’ Secondary Faculty’s principal, Sylvia Steyn. They have maintained a 100% pass rate since the school’s first matric class in 2000. “All of our 2014 matrics passed with entry to tertiary studies (80 with entry to BD and six with entry to Diploma Studies.) Ural Jo-

nathan Alp, who achieved 10 distinctions overall, also achieved in the top 1% nationally in Advanced Programme Mathematics. We are most proud of the class of 2014, who between them achieved 181 subject distinctions. Thirteen learners achieved an aggregate of 80% or more,” elaborates Steyn. The head master at Bloubergrant, Denver Walbrugh, is also over the moon with the school’s improving results. The greatest increase in Bachelor passes category is judged by comparing the number over the period of 2012 to 2014. The criteria also include consistency in the number of Grade 12 candidates over the three year period. Bloubergrant’s percentage of Bachelor passes increased by more than 20%. The school also achieved a 97.2% pass rate. “I was very surprised when I got the phone call,” says Walbrugh, who attributes the award to “hard work and commitment by the educators”. “I also think it comes down to the learner making the right subject choices. The parents should listen to the educators when it comes to this.” Walbrugh says the school will now aim for a 80 to 90% Bachelor passes for 2015/2016. Schäfer concluded her key note address at the awards by giving all the learners of today and tomorrow some valuable advice. “There is only one place where success comes before work, and that is in the dictionary. Work hard, learn from your mistakes, never lose your integrity, and never give up. Also, be careful how you measure success – work out what is important to you, and do not compromise on it. And most importantly, be modest.”

World design project sees Dunoon space rejuvenated The construction of a clubhouse, which is part of the redesign of urban space in the northern sports precinct of Dunoon, is at an advanced stage. It is expected that this phase of the project will be completed before the end of the current financial year. The City of Cape Town will then look at ways to connect the northern sports facility with the community hall through a more direct route. A feasibility study for the development of an innovation and learning hub as part of this development is currently underway. Dunoon’s location, characterised by a main transport route and access to job opportunities, makes it a popular area. It is close to Killarney Business Park, the adjacent farms, Parklands and Montague Gardens, which offer job opportunities. It is also situated on a main transport route and serviced by the MyCiTi feeder and trunk buses which connect this bustling area with the central city and the nearby towns. This urban space project is linked to the local area planning initiative which has been designated as a World Design Capital 2014 project because it is changing lives

through design. “The planning and design phase for the northern sport facility started in 2011 and the first phase of construction began in 2012. This project has shown that progress is possible when design and community collaboration come together,” says City mayco member for energy, environmental and spatial planning, Johan van der Merwe. “Various political parties, private firms and the community have partnered with the City to ensure that a holistic and inclusive approach has been taken with the design and construction of this space. By creating inclusive spaces, we are unlocking opportunities for vulnerable communities and enabling redress through increased investment, heightened awareness, and committed collaboration,” says van der Merwe. The main components include drainage to the sports fields, a skateable forecourt, a climbing wall and a slide, the construction of a retention pond, spectator seating, hard and soft landscaping, an informal basketball or netball tree, mixed-use hard courts, a mixed-use synthetic surface court, a spray park and a changing room, office facility and clubhouse.

The Sector 4 Community Police Forum subforum will be hosting their first Annual General Meeting for this year on 11 February at 19:00 in summer Greens Community Hall. The CPF requests all residents to make a special effort to attend the meeting.

The organisers believe that by uniting as a community, the sector can become a safer place for all residents. V For more information contact the chairperson, Mor né Avenant, on 072 443 7874.

MyCiTi a transport leader in Africa An independent survey has recognised the City’s MyCiTi bus network as leading the field of African public transport systems. The Siemens African Green City Index refers to the investment in the MyCiTi Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) network being rolled out to historically under-served areas in the metro. As a result, Cape Town is among the top cities in the index for the length of superior forms of transport such as BRT lines. The continued expansion of this network is crucial to empower previously disadvan-

taged communities and ease the pressure brought by rapid urban development. The report specifically mentions the historically underserved West Coast region, the prevalence of minibus-taxis and private vehicles, and the poorly maintained rail system. It is these challenges that led the City to implement the service first in the West Coast region first, particularly to Dunoon and Atlantis. The expansion of the service to the Metro South-East is also a necessary development.

Oystercatcher chicks counted on walks Under the auspices of the Friends of Blaauwberg Conservation Area (FoBCA), walks for youth to count Oystercatchers take place every second Saturday throughout the summer months. The last of the two December Oystercatcher Count (OCC) walks along Blouberg Beach yielded not only sightings of new oystercatcher chicks, but also some new eggs

and a seal pup. Despite the high spring tides having reached right into the vegetation fringes in some places, it’s thought that no eggs had been washed from their nests. The seal pup would likely have been one of several which annually at around this time of year make their way across to Blouberg Beach from Robben Island and other islands in the area. Sometimes, exhausted by the swim, they land up on the beach and may spend a couple of days resting and recovering their strength before returning to the sea to swim back again. Their presence is a good reason for dogwalkers to ensure their pets are on leads on the beach. It’s important that members of the public don’t interfere with the seal pups unless they are physically injured or entangled by fishing line/plastic - in which case they should contact the SPCA on 021 711 4158/9 or after hours on 083 326 1604). Youth – local and visiting – are invited to join the next OCC on the morning of Saturday 24 January. V Contact Heinz on hnzgeiger@gmail.com or 073 225 3174 for more information.

Cape youth can get smart about careers Matriculants should use the City’s career guidance services. Very often matriculants wait for their final results before deciding on a career path. In some cases, it becomes quite late to try and find a tertiary institution that can accommodate them. Added to this is the dilemma of which field of study to pursue. “We would like to remind matriculants and potential job seekers that help is at hand,” said the City’s mayoral committee member for corporate services, Xanthea Limberg. “The City’s SmartCape facility can be accessed at more than 100 libraries across Cape Town. New users can register at the library to make use of the facility immediately. “Each user is allowed one free session per day for a maximum of 45 minutes and can use this time to do some research on what is available to them. “Should extra time be needed, this can be arranged with the administrator and would depend on the demand for the SmartCape facility at the time. The time limit helps to manage the high demand for the facility during peak usage times.” In addition to the SmartCape service, the daily newspapers are also available at the City’s libraries. Currently there are over 360 000 registered SmartCape users across the city, with just over 90% who are active and make use of the facility regularly. This initiative has proved useful for learners doing research for projects, job-seekers looking for employment opportunities, entrepreneurs starting

The project has been recognised for its innovative effort to connect residents with free public access to computers, when the City received the Access to Learning Award by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Fellowship for aspiring entrepreneurs The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation offers individuals with entrepreneurial potential an opportunity to develop as responsible entrepreneurs by applying for a university Fellowship opportunity. “The foundation invests in a long-term legacy of greatness through inspiring and developing individuals who will become high impact, responsible entrepreneurs who are capable of shaping and transforming the future of Southern Africa,” said Anthony Farr, CEO of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation. Fellowship opportunities are available for Grade 12 learners, with applications closing on Thursday 30 April.

Applications for first year university students closes on 31 August. The foundation supports degrees in commerce, engineering and science (excluding medicine), law or humanities (majoring in politics, philosophy or economics). The fellowship opportunity provides candidate fellows access to a community of likeminded individuals, exposure to thought leaders, mentorship, entrepreneurial mind-set development and full university funding. New system to help new pupils find a place at school As about 109 000 Grade 1 pupils start “big school” today (Wednesday), the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says its new information management system for school admissions will help ensure no child or parent is disappointed and shown the door at any school. “The system allows us to see which schools are full and which still have space for pupils,” says Millicent Merton, a WCED spokesperson. “The system helps us identify problem areas where certain schools and grades

are overcrowded. It also assists the department to see where in the province there is (a request for) space needed in schools.” Merton says there are requests for space in schools in urban areas and the metro. “Space in schools that achieve great academic achievement are especially in high demand.” Parents who are yet to apply to a school, should contact the nearest school as soon as possible, she says. “After the holiday there may be space available due to cancellations.”

The City of Cape Town’s naming committee has recently recommended that Table Bay Boulevard be renamed after former president FW de Klerk. The proposed renaming of Table Bay Boulevard in honour of former president FW de Klerk received overwhelming support during a comprehensive and city-wide public participation process. This process took place over a 30-day period from 1 to 31 October last year, during which residents, role players, interested parties and community organisations were invited to air their views. “We are encouraged by the number of residents who participated in the public consultation process. Although the public consultation process is not a referendum and therefore not about numbers, we do note that the overwhelming majority of those who participated supported the renaming proposal. “The naming committee has now recommended to the executive mayor and council that Table Bay Boulevard be renamed to FW de Klerk Boulevard. Ultimately it is the council that is responsible for the final decision,’ says the chairperson of the City’s naming committee, Brett Herron.

Bands, braks, food and fun to be found at market The first Century City Natural Goods Market for the year takes place on Sunday 25 January, offering an array of free live entertainment for all ages, including the band The Time Flies, free train rides between 11:00 and 13:00, and a jumping castle. Be sure to pop over the bridge to Intaka Island for an “Art on the Island” exhibition, accompanied by wine tasting. While there’s an entertaining menu for visitors, the market gives shoppers time to celebrate the bright side of life with a glass of organic bubbly while browsing around the great selection of quality products and delicious food, kept cool and safe under Bedouin tents. The on-site clubhouse has seating facilities and offers coffee and tea, and a bar is provided for alcoholic drinks. Visitors can also enjoy boat trips from Intaka Island to Canal Walk. For dog lovers, African Tails will be hosting an adoption day with the cutest mutts and puppies. Trading hours are between 09:00 and 14:00 in Central Park, Park Lane in Century City. V For more information email naturalgoodsmar ket@gmail.com or phone 021 531 2173.

Action Forum to hear what bothers residents The Western Cape Action Forum (WCAF) invites all members of the public, and particularly the citizens of Table View, Parklands and Sunningdale, to a public meeting on 28 January at 19:00 at Leibrandt van Niekerk Hall (Table View Hall) in South Road. Local ward councillors, Western Cape minister for community safety Dan Plato, councillor Andre Fourie, the Metro Police, Table View Ratepayers’ Association and other representatives will apparently also be present. The purpose of the meeting is to provide a platform to the local citizens to publicly voice their questions regarding vagrancy, loitering, taxis, illegal street trading and any other problem issues in the area. LEAD ARTICLE

School term marks a sad day for moms A tear glistens on the mother’s cheek. It is her child’s first day in school and the fear of the unknown grips at her heart. The father doesn’t cry, although he too professes that it is a sad day. The idea of having all this free time on his hands is daunting (and so wonderful he can cry). He will be going back to work in a week, so that gives him about 30 hours of freedom. The mother looks at him and gives him a reassuring hug. “We will get through this love. Our little one is growing up so quickly!” She wipes away the tears. Why are men and women so different? A mountain of books has been written about this well-researched subject, so this article will have no moments of profound clarity. What it will do, just in time for the start of the new school year, is emphasize how becoming a mother changes one’s outlook forever. Most men (and yes, I am one) would remember how devastated their wife was when her pregnancy leave came to an end. They would also recall how relieved they themselves were to go to work every day. It’s not as if they were never going to see their child again. Author JD Salinger summed it up when he concluded: “Mothers are all slightly insane.” He forgot to add, as one unknown auther did: “Being a mother means that your heart is no longer yours; it wanders wherever your children do.”

Agree with need for store closure So glad to read Victoria from Durbanville’s letter (“Stores should let staff be at home”, Tygerburger, 14 January). I was absolutely disgusted that not only was Checkers Durbanville open on Christmas day but so was their bottle store next door. A friend of mine asked a Pick ’n Pay staff member in a mall about working on a Sunday and she said they were forced to work then. When Christmas Day and Sundays are not treated with respect, how can we expect this country to be blessed. The people who are Christian should be with their families. It is the breakdown of family life that is the centre of our social woes. Shame on all those Supermarkets. I personally will never ever buy anything from that Checkers bottle store again. MAM Email

Weet nie of dit was omdat jy skuldig gevoel het nie, maar jy het gesê: “Is jy my man, my seun?

ANNALIZE Ridgeworth

Online sale leaves pensioner stranded While Gumtree may be a good way of buying and selling used or unwanted items, one will get genuine sellers, but one will also come across ‘the not so genuine sellers’. Just recently my son bought a cylinder head for my little Golf. The seller insisted it was a 1600 head, but when the mechanic checked it, it was actually one for a 1400 Golf. The seller said it could be returned and he would refund the money in two days’ time. But after numerous phone calls, that two days has now become almost two weeks.

It goes to show that the old saying ‘not everyone can be trusted to be genuine’ still stands. To that “not so genuine seller”, just know there’s a senior citizen stranded with no wheels! DISILLUSIONED SENIOR CITIZEN Belhar

Disgusted by pastor locking family out It is amazing how members of our society, including politicians, and now even this pastor, will willingly give their word and make an agreement in writing and then later turn around and break it (“Home owners shut out by pastor, Tygerburger, 14 January). He agreed in writing to vacate by 31 October, and still remains in occupation of the premises. He and his ilk are a disgrace to society and I cannot understand how he can have the gall to represent any religion at all. There was a time when a handshake sealed an agreement and neither party would break that agreement. Today unscrupulous people duck and dive and use loopholes in the law to gain advantage over others. The Squatter law was designed to assist poverty stricken homeless people who occupied vacant land. To give them some measure of rights over the powerful landowners. It was designed to stop bulldozers from clearing people from the land without recourse to the courts. It is high time that the lawmakers got their act together and changed these squatter laws. In addition, some attorneys delay court proceedings by forgetting to appear in court, losing documents etc, with the object of giving defaulting tenants occupation of the premises for, in some cases, many years. Universities are looking for gamblers The MRC Unit on Anxiety and Stress Disorders at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town seek participants for a research study on gambling disorders. At least 50 percent of South Africans gamble in one way or another. However, it does become a problem when they start spending too much time and/or money gambling. According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey of 2012, four to seven percent of South African adults are problem gamblers, whereas approximately one percent of the population suffers from gambling disorder. Problem gamblers who find it increasingly difficult to resist the urge to gamble despite negative consequences, such as financial and/or relationship difficulties, might be suffering from gambling disorder (sometimes referred to as gambling addiction). Gambling disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterised by the uncontrollable urge to gamble despite serious consequences. Individuals with gambling disorder may continually chase losses, hide their behaviour, lie about where they go, how much they spend or owe, accumulate debt or even resort to fraud or theft to continue gambling. The research team is looking for persons with gambling disorder or with problems related to their gambling behaviour and for healthy control persons (for comparison) who are interested in participating. the team that heads up Blouberg Beach Cleanup, hosted a fun intercommunity soccer tournament in Joe Slovo Park recently, where over 100 players from Langa, Dunoon, Phoenix, Joe Slovo Park and Brooklyn took part. The emphasis was on fun, meeting people from other communities and forming new friendships. All players were given a Christmas bucket of love which included healthy, nutritious food items.

Bible given sign for the deaf CLAUDI MAILOVICH Delegates of the Reformed Churches in South Africa recently sat in silence as a sign language linguist and researcher informed them about the development of a new Bible in South African sign language. Ananda van der Walt, a translator for the Hands with Words project, told them there is a huge need for ministering among the deaf community in South Africa. “We do not have people in South Africa who can directly translate the Bible into sign language,” Van der Walt explained. She said this is the first attempt to translate the entire Bible into South African sign language. The Jehovah’s Witnesses are the only ones yet to have translated the Bible into sign language for their deaf followers.

For the deaf who use sign language, to have to read the Bible in another language is very difficult. Lisa Craye, executive director of Hands with Words, said they aim to launch 32 evangelical Bible stories by the end of this year. The plan is eventually to provide the deaf with the full Bible in sign language. “It is going to take us forever to translate the Bible,” she joked. Since the project started in 2013, they only managed to translate 16 stories. Craye says the reaction from the deaf community after seeing a draft of the Bible’s creation story in sign language, was incredible. “It was the first time they have ever heard of and read the story.” – Translated from Die Burger

Tips for cycling on Table Mountain trails M

ountain biking has become a popular recreational activity in the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP). For mountain biking enthusiasts, or those new to the sport, here is what you need to know to enjoy mountain biking in a national park. The TMNP is governed by national legislation under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act (NEMPA). It states all activities must be regulated by the management authority to protect endangered species, habitats and ecological systems. An Environmental Management Plan (EMP) is also developed for each activity in the park, including dog walking, mountain biking, horse riding and recreational fishing. A rigorous stakeholder engagement process was followed and rules and regulations for each activity were decided. A fee was calculated based on the SANParks Wild Card System and relative environmental impact of the particular activity, excluding the biking trails. Various national job creation programmes provide funds to maintain the vast mountain biking trails available for every level of mountain biking. Many of these trails were developed with the input and financial support of the major mountain biking associations that enjoy the park. The cost for mountain biking in the TMNP is R460 per year and includes unlimited access to ride in this natural wonder

Mountain biking in the Table Mountain National Park includes unlimited access to ride in this natural wonder and World National Heritage site. PHOTO: BLOG.BIKERIDR.COM and World National Heritage site. Family cards for mountain biking will be introduced soon. To ensure and protect the park’s natural assets, self-regulation among user groups has become one of the park’s law enforcement tools. This has proved very effective. Almost two million mountain users enjoy a variety of activities per year. For more information and a list of sale outlets for TMNP’s My Green Card, My Activity Permit or Wild Card call 021 712 7471. Small festival shows a big heart GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

T

here is nothing small about the writing of Adam Small. His words have been empowering generations since the 1960’s and a new production at Artscape breathes new life into his words. Applauz Arts Initiative in Association with Artscape is hosting Celebrating Adam Small…A Festival of his work at The Arena until Saturday 31 January and it is a mustsee for all ages. Natalia De Rocha, along with Kurt Egelhof and Camillo Lombard, who were responsible for the music, must be praised for this project which is a fitting tribute to the legacy of this important writer. There are two parts in the production, the first part being Celebrating Adam Small the Man which is a showcase of some of his poetry and plays. Who knew that these works, which we were introduced to as youngsters, would still mean so much 40 years later. Small made us aware of the injustices of apartheid with his words and stories of how it affected all facets of our lives in all communities. Now, those stories are being told to a generation that sometimes can’t comprehend the bitterness it created.

Solitude: One needn’t look too hard to find reasons to live in Cape Town. This photographer describes the scene at Table View beach as a “beautiful, warm, windless evening”. It was apparently 30 degrees Celsius when she left the beach that evening. PHOTO: DES FEATHERSTONE

The cast of the Adam Small festival are ready to take you into a journey of words and music that gives more insight into the writing of one of South Africa's foremost poets and playwrights. PHOTO: HANNES THIART

The youthful cast take you through some of his best hits, including Kanna He is Coming Home with it underlying themes of the abuse of women in our society at the time, although I think the original Kaapse Afri-

kaans or mixed version would have worked better. In this section, Lauren Hannie shines as Makiet even though the young cast do justice to extracts from Orange Earth and Joan-

ie Galant Hulle. The second part of the production (both can be seen separately) is Adam Small BeJazzed and here the words of his poem, Ko’ Lat ons Sing, come to life as the words of Small get the jazz treatment. A quartet (From Lombard’s Cape Music Institute) led by Dillon April on keyboards provide the perfect backing for the music provided for Small’s poetry. There is an abundance of Cape flavours in a jazzy-ghoema style that adds to the production and give new meaning to his poetry. In this section the poetry dedication to Small by Siphokazi Jonas is a major highlight. It also added to an emotional moment for the poet as he was moved to tears afterwards taking the microphone and announcing: “Now I can die happily!” Guitarist Keanu Harker shines with confidence, not only as a guitarist, but as a vocalist he brings a special touch to making the words of the poet come to life. These performances, Adam Small the Man starting at 18:30 and Bejazzed at 20:30 are running until Saturday 31 January with bookings at Computicket. A must-see for all ages, especially the younger generation who need to know and understand the talent that resided in our communities in the apartheid era.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A FIRE BREAKS OUT • Dial 107 (Landline) and 021 480 7700 (Cell) for fire emergencies. • Remain calm. • Turn the electricity or gas supply off. If you cannot turn the gas off, get out. • Use a blanket or wet towel to smother the fire. • Close all windows and doors behind you to cut off the air supply. • Use water to put out wood, paper and material fires. Use sand to put out paraffin or oil fires. • Crawl below the smoke and hold a wet cloth over your mouth and nose. • If your clothing catches fire – stop, drop and roll on the ground. • Help those who you can to get out. Forget about your belongings. Once you’re out, stay out.

ith her bright blue hair and inspired fashion, Blaauwberg’s Gabbi Katz is challenging the stereotypes around beauty. By day, Gabbi is a successful businesswoman, but away from the workplace, she becomes The Blue Haired Betty, her pin-up model persona. With a little help from her supporters, Gabi hopes to become the first South African to compete in the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend international pin-up contest in April. For Gabbi, being a pin-up girl is about a whole lot more than pretty clothes and poses. She says a modern day pin-up girl is a combination of old-school values and the strong will and mind of a 21st century woman – prim and proper with a rebellious streak, which she believes is also an apt description of herself. Gabbi made her first foray into the world of pin-up modelling as a form of artistic expression when she moved away from performing on stage. “The ‘cheesecake’ pin-up style of modelling fits my quirky and silly personality well,” she says. Having always led an alternative lifestyle within the borders of being a “straight-andnarrow kinda girl”, Gabbi says pin-up modelling gave her a place where she felt she belonged. Pin-up models go hand-in-hand with the Rockabilly lifestyle, a perfect fit for the “betty” who loves old-school rock ‘n roll music, fashion and the “style and class of this by-gone era”. Gabbi says she “truly got into it” when she started posing for the Milnerton-based clothing label, Miss Happ and now she uses her position in the pin-up community to pro-

mote the Rockabilly lifestyle and challenge people to “dare to be different”. She will be attending the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend as the brand ambassador for Miss Happ who will be showing their spring/ summer range at the Viva Las Vegas Fashion Show. Since she was going to the festival anyway, Gabi says she entered the pinup contest in a pure “why the heck not” moment. “I was absolutely amazed at the response and support I received as soon as the announcement of the public vote was made on the 5 January,” she says. In fact, she’s gained so much support that she’s in the top six of over 100 contestants. Her goal now is stay within the top six during the competition’s public voting stage to guarantee her spot at the Miss Viva Las Vegas Finale which will be hosted in Las Vegas on Saturday 4 April. Stanley’s music no art imitation LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

J

ohannesburg-based singer Stanley June does more than just imitate art. TygerBurger caught up with him while he was touring Cape Town recently. Stanley describes himself as an “ordinary next-door guy” who likes making music and performing, but when it comes to music, he’s an all round creative. Besides writing and performing his own songs, he also produces his own music videos, creates his own album art and runs a studio where he records and produces his own music. “I love the entire process of just putting everything together, working from the starting point to the finished product,” he says. Like other artists, he isn’t always happy with end product, but knows that the music will lose its intimacy if he keeps hammering away at it.

Great tour This is Stanley’s third Cape Town tour and he says this trip in particular was “exceptionally great”. He had the opportunity to play venues like Die Boer in Durbanville and the Barleycorn Music Club in Claremont where he played to an audience of “listeners” instead of a drunken crowd who happen to throw an ear to the stage every now and then. “People really sat down and all their attention was focused towards the stage.” Stanley says the response he got to his music were positive and he feels he had more of a connection with Cape Town audiences this time round. While Stanley says the Cape Town and Johannesburg music “scenes” have a lot in common, he finds Capetonians more open to musicians from outside the city. Stanley’s music is heavily influenced by classic rock. “I’ve always loved the old school, rock ‘n roll with loud guitars and screaming vocals.” But there’s also a softer, more dynamic side to his music. His fans range from 10-year-olds to people in their 60s and 70s who all enjoy his brand of rock with an “acoustic core”. Follow up Being an independent artist, Stanley says he doesn’t have access to mainstream stores, but despite this his debut album, Imitating Art, which was released in 2013, is doing well through online platforms. He is currently working on a follow up al-

bum which he hopes to release by the end of the year. “I’ve learnt so much in this year of performing that I think I’ll take an entirely different approach to the new album.” Instead of producing music with a commercial market or radio in mind, Stanley says fans can expect his next release to be more guitar-driven with more instrumentals.

Behind the scenes While many artists get their “big break” on radio, Stanley has made use of online platforms such as YouTube to gain exposure. “I like to video record everything that I do.” From “behind-the-scenes” videos to clips of live performance, his YouTube videos give his fans a chance to see the “face behind the sound”. Stanley hopes to release at least two or three new official music videos this year, with the help of a production company this time. “You are very limited to what you can do with just a tripod,” he jokes. Also on his “to do” list is another Cape Town tour this year, but for now fans can visit www.stanleyjune.com or www.facebook.com/StanleyJuneMusic to stay up to date with what Stanley is up to. The ninth Cape Town International Summer Music Festival begins this week. Sponsored by the City of Cape Town and presented by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO), the festival runs from Thursday 22 January until Thursday 12 February. The CPO’s principal guest conductor, Martin Panteleev, will be on the podium for the four concerts in the season which will all take place at the City Hall in Darling Street. Inspired by a true story, John Pielmeier’s Agnes of God will be on stage at the Masque Theatre from Thursday 22 January. The production is loosely based on a real event that happened in 1977 and tells the story of a novice nun who gives birth and insists that the dead child was a result of an immaculate conception. A psychiatrist and the Mother Superior of the convent clash during the resulting investigation. The play was adapted for screen in 1985 for a movie that starred Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft and Meg Tilly. For its run at the Masque Theatre, Agnes of God will star Shane Kleyn, Pilar Pringiers-Spinnox and Halima Beale. The play is directed by Philippe Pringiers. Agnes of God runs until Saturday 24 January. Performances start at 20:00 on Thursday and Friday and 18:30 on Saturday. Tickets cost R90. Call 021 788 1898 during office hours or email bookings@masquetheatre.co.za to book. V Tickets cost R90. Call 021 788 1898 during office hours or email bookings@masquetheatre.co.za to book.

ILLEGAL DUMPING WILL COST YOU A CLINIC. The City of Cape Town spends nearly R350 million every year clearing away rubbish from illegal dumping spots ranging from empty land to sewers and blocked toilets. That’s money taken away from the development of things like clinics, parks and libraries in Cape Town. So help us by dumping your waste at one of 25 legal drop off sites around the city. To find your nearest site or to report illegal dumping, call 0860 103 089.

TYGERBURGER Milnerton 27

Sport gets extreme at new indoor venue S

outh Africa’s Premiere Action Sport festival will showcase the best in local and international athletes when Ultimate X 2015 flips into its new home at Grand Arena, GrandWest Casino on 27 and 28 February. Six years on, Ultimate X will once again deliver on its promise of bringing extreme sport lovers a host of spectacular stunts such as FMX, BMX and skate as athletes compete for a prize of over R150 000. With more thrilling action than ever before, festival goers can expect nothing less than a bigger, better, faster and more epic Ultimate X. The festival brings with it a fresh flair as the Grand Arena is transformed into Afri-

ca’s first indoor, floodlit, pyrotechnical lazer extreme sport showdown.

Stoked When asked about the event, Ultimate X owner and mastermind Markus Museler said they were “stoked” to be taking Ultimate X into the Grand Arena. “This is going to change the face of action sports in South Africa,” said Museler. Spectators will experience a never-beforeseen Indoor Action Sport blowout with, as always, Africa’s best skate and BMX park. There are limited seats available so be sure to get yours now!” Added discipline features will include Trials MX/Mtb biking and blading. 2015 Athlete

Ambassadors Alastair Sayer - FMX, Stuart Loudon - BMX and Martin Stoffberg - skate, echoed each other’s words and had this to say about the festival: “We always look forward to receiving the invite to Ultimate X and making our way down to Cape Town for undoubtedly the best X event of the year. The Ultimate X team always exceeds our expectations by organising such a world class event. We are looking forward to the change of having the event indoors with a sold out arena.”

Hot party As with previous years, Ultimate X will have a host of international superstars in each discipline. Some of the major names

are Maxime Charveron (France), Louis Taubert (Germany) and a Freestyle MX rider whose name is soon to be released. The artist entertainment line-up will include some of South Africa’s hottest bands and DJ’s. They will take to the stage, bringing the crowd legendary performances at the event, as well as an after party to close off South Africa’s largest Extreme Sport Festival. Doors open at 18:00 and close at 22:00. Prepurchased tickets ranging from R150 to R250 are available at Computicket. Tickets for children under 10 range from R100 to R175.
