DEAR AUDIENCE! As the holidays approach, a lot of us get the sense it is time to pause for a moment in preparation for the year to come. At the end of the year, it is nice to consider what life has given us, what knowledge we gained, and what skills we have learned. This is also an excellent opportunity to put into words what we want to receive and achieve over the next 12 months. Things are no different as this pandemic year full of unexpected challenges draws to a close. In fact, it is perhaps even more important to look back honestly and take stock, because 2020 has shed a new light on everything. Here at Müpa, we have always insisted there is nothing more valuable than time spent with loved ones. This will never change, which is why we consider ourselves extremely lucky to be able to work for you to deliver these precious moments. We continue to believe that the greatest gift we can give each other is the magic of experiences shared. The year 2020 perhaps made all this more apparent than ever. We have never been more certain of the important role the power of performing arts plays in all our lives – in sustaining us, carrying us through difficult times and lifting us out of the dayto-day doldrums. We know this all too well as we have experienced first hand what it is like to have to live without this spiritual nourishment for so many months. What had always seemed natural – sold-out concerts, and the energy and cathartic pleasure of live performance – is now a rare moment of joy against a backdrop of careful safety precautions. Many of the things that were previously part of everyday life have become a cause for celebration. As we can learn how fragile life can be, we have learned to appreciate the little things.

And what I feel now is eternal gratitude. I am grateful to our outstanding artists, who have adapted to this situation with patience, humility and good faith as they looked out, often wearing masks, onto an audience separated by the necessary distancing requirements, or created wonderful moments in front of the camera. I am grateful to my colleagues, the remarkable Müpa Budapest team, whose members have shown astonishing flexibility, creativity and exemplary mental strength from day to day to ensure your safety to make it possible for you to experience the replenishing power of art. Above all I, and we, are grateful to you, the legendary Müpa Budapest audience that has formed into a close community around us. We can’t thank you enough for encouraging us on every forum and platform, for sharing your love and support, and for accepting the changing circumstances flexibly, and with understanding and empathy. Your support means a great deal to us and we can promise in exchange – as a new year’s resolution – that we will look after you and each other, and together as a community find new ways to create these precious and jubilant moments day by day and evening by evening. Stay with us in the winter months and keep up to date with the latest information and developments, and we will continue to work towards giving you countless more wonderful experiences in 2021. In every respect. Csaba Káel CEO

OF CONTEMPORARY ART

LUDWIG MUSEUM

TIME MACHINE. A NEW SELECTION FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LUDWIG MUSEUM

88

The time machine is a device existing, as of yet, only in theory that can whisk our physical selves into the past or the future. Rather than concerning itself with the possibility of time travel as explored in science fiction, however, this exhibition examines the relationship between time and art from various perspectives, treating the works themselves as a time machine that makes it possible for us to travel in time in our minds. The exhibition was put together amidst extraordinary circumstances, during a brief respite from the pandemic, meaning that the lessons of recent months could not be ignored. From the museum’s collection of around 800 pieces, we have selected works that reveal to the viewer different aspects – personal, historical, and in terms of the artist’s life and work – of time, from the individual point of view of the curator. BarabásiLab: Fake News. The spread of a piece of fake news on Twitter in the course of the 2016 American presidential elections, 2018, data visualisation

10 October 2020 – 21 March 2021

BARABÁSILAB: HIDDEN PATTERNS. THE LANGUAGE OF NETWORK THINKING This collection is being organised around presenting the past twenty-five years of research projects based on so-called Barabási networks largely linked to the work of physicist and network researcher Albert-László Barabási. By tracking the development and evolution of network visualisation – through a presentation of the key projects conducted by the Barabási research laboratory – observers can find a fine arts application for the comprehensive methodology. Through the use of state-of-the-art technology, the network diagrams and structures graphically interpret the hidden connections and interrelationships that underlie each of the phenomena under examination. The BarabásiLab’s research focuses on the search for mostly invisible interrelationships between things and phenomena and uncovering repetitive patterns that connect nature, society, language and culture. The network approach provides a comprehensive and universal method that can be used to examine almost any relationship (for example, the success of artistic careers) with scientific precision. By means of both virtual and actual data sculptures and augmented reality tools, representing data in three-dimensional space offers new possibilities for visualisation. The exhibition, part of the CAFe Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival, is a joint programme of Müpa Budapest and the Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art. Curator: József Készman

Tamás Konok: Bartók Duos (Moving Lines) No. 2 (2008)

10 December 2020 – 15 March 2021

TAMÁS KONOK 90

90

Celebrating his 90th birthday this year is the prominent painter Tamás Konok, whose geometric abstractionism constructed around narrow lines also resolves itself into lyricism. And we too are celebrating the career – nearly seven decades long and counting – of this Kossuth Prize-winning artist. After originally training as a musician, Konok ended up studying at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, where he earned his degree under the tutelage of Aurél Bernáth. In 1959, he moved to Paris. His experiences there led to his choice of abstractionism as the path forward. He opened his first solo show in 1964, at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum. In the late ‘60s, he started creating monochromatic relief collages, which were incorporated as ornamentation into various structures. This architectural work also exerted a great influence on his painting, which became streamlined and dominated by the use of lines. He gained French citizenship in 1970. His collaboration with Zurich’s Galerie Schlégl then led to a two-decade stay in the Swiss city, where he and his wife, sculptor Katalin Hetey, mostly resided and worked during that time. His first Hungarian exhibition took place in Győr in 1981, followed by another one at the Hungarian Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. The year 1995 saw a retrospective of his work to date at the Ludwig Museum. His regular practice and performance as a musician over the years has exerted quite a bit of influence on his work. As he has written, “The problems of how to perfect one’s technique and how to pay attention to rhythm and the individual lines of the parts involved, as well as how to interpret and summarise the entire work, are ones that are common to all the arts. I understood all of these things instinctively, and they helped me to develop my abilities as a painter.” Curator: Krisztina Szipőcs

SPRING PREVIEW

19 April 2021

MATSUEV AND FRIENDS’ JAZZ CONCERT The world famous Russian pianist Denis Matsuev has been a dear acquaintance, indeed friend, of Budapest audiences for 20 years, regularly performing at Müpa Budapest, including as the Artist of the Season in 2018/19. We have enjoyed his solo performances, concerto pieces, and chamber music production. We have heard how forcefully he performs Mussorgsky, his range of feeling as he plays Tchaikovsky and his poetic portrayal of the music of Rachmaninoff. Now, however, he is preparing to present something never-seen-before in Hungary: for the first time Matsuev will play a jazz concert with his musical friends from Russia!

28 April 2021

AVISHAI COHEN TRIO FEAT. ELCHIN SHIRINOV & MARK GUILIANA Three outstanding jazz musicians, all of whom have already appeared in Budapest to great acclaim – with Cohen and Guiliana also each having performed separately at Müpa Budapest, but never before together like this. From the current line-up for this trio led by Israeli-born double bassist Avishai Cohen, Azeri pianist Elchin Shirinov might be familiar from Cohen’s most recent album (2019’s Arvoles), and in the case of American drummer Mark Guiliana, it could be for the bassist’s best-known record, Gently Disturbed, from 2008. Each of them merits listening to independently as well, but playing together, they are unmissable.

WITNESSES

100 YEARS OF UNFORGETTABLE HUNGARIAN FOLK SONG One hundred years is a long time. Today, when we look back on the century that has passed since the Trianon Peace Treaty, we tend to think it better to do so in a dignified manner. Without complaining or making threats. Avoiding pathos and false self-pity. The Hungarians who remain in the parts of the country separated from Hungary in 1919 remind us of the struggles of the past century not only through their very existence, but also with the gems of our culture that they continue to preserve.

JAZZ LEGENDS

LEE RITENOUR & DAVE GRUSIN Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin have 11 Grammy Awards and 54 Grammy nominations between them – as well as a very special, almost telepathic working relationship that has produced a total of 17 joint albums. They are both extraordinarily successful and multi-faceted figures in American music, yet Lee Ritenour only came to Hungary for the first time on the invitation of the Budapest Spring Festival in 2014, while this is the first time the 87-year-old Dave Grusin will beguile a Hungarian audience with his wonderful artistry.

MÜPA BUDAPEST

Müpa Budapest is one of Hungary’s most recognised cultural brands and among the country’s most modern cultural institutions. The venue embraces the many branches of the arts in unique fashion by providing an equally fitting setting for classical, contemporary and popular music, jazz and world music, opera, contemporary circus, dance, literature and film. Müpa Budapest was created in 2005 to allow these disciplines of the arts to offer cultural events of outstanding quality to an exceptionally broad audience. The fundamental mission of the institution – while respecting artistic traditions both at home and in Europe at large – is to present new trends and directions and make them intelligible to all, and to provide a venue for high-quality experiences accessible to both the connoisseur and the wider general public. In addition to performances by artists from the domestic and international vanguard, Müpa Budapest initiates and supports the creation of new works. It is committed to nurturing international contacts, pursuing cultural objectives in Hungary, and popularising Hungarian performing artists abroad. Its key goals include ensuring that the young people of the coming generations grow up to become conscious adult consumers of culture in ever-increasing numbers. It accomplishes all this by presenting artistic events and services that inspire, stimulate dialogue and prompt inquiry, as well as creating original programmes founded on the value of experience, creativity and interaction.
