S! GREETING The 2017 Fall Program and Adult Learning Guide is full of activities to bring out the G.I.R.L. (go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, & leader) in all Girl Scouts through quality programming led by competent, inspirational, mentors. Over the years, watching girls grow into confident, collaborative, and experienced leaders through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience has impacted my life and pushed me to continue my work with the utmost importance. We believe that girls need to experience the “can-hardly-sleep-because I’m-waiting-to-the-next-day” feeling by participating in quality programming that offers them the tools needed to become successful leaders in their communities. As my retirement approaches, I'm overwhelmed with pride. The evolution of our girls into women of courage, confidence, and character brings joy into every part of my life. I ask that you share the Girl Scout message with a friend, co-worker, classmate or family member and ask them to support the girls of central Indiana by participating in Girl Scouts. Invite them to make a difference in a girl's life and to get involved by visiting girlscoutsindiana.org. Although my career is nearly finished, there will always be girls with a desire to lead and make a positive impact on our world. We must encourage and provide them with the tools necessary to succeed and follow their dreams. The world needs more G.I.R.L.s! Thank you for your time and devotion to Girl Scouts of Central Indiana. Warmest regards,

Deborah Hearn Smith Chief Executive Officer girlscoutsindiana.org

LADDEr of LEADErShip As Girl Scouts take journeys and earn the awards, they’re climbing a ladder that lets them be leaders in their own lives and in the world! Pass it on!

Ambassadors raise their voices to advocate for issues they care about.

Girls move dreams forward! Girls use sisterhood to better themselves and the world!

Seniors have a vision and lead the world closer to it.

Cadettes develop the relationship skills they need to be leaders in their lives and in the world.

Juniors learn that leaders need power—their own, their team’s, and their community’s.

Brownies go on a quest to find the three keys to leadership.

Ambassadors learn that leaders aim for justice.

Girls put the ME in media.

Cadettes become leaders in clearing the air!

Girls try on roles and realize their opportunities in life are limitless.

Juniors bring energy solutions to their lives and the world.

Designers, if you show these separately, I guess you have to add the brown outline around the center one two. But if you show them assembled, and as it will actually appear when award patch is put together, the central patch has a blue border that matches the background. I’ve thinned the border a bit from what will appear on the patch--due to their sewing constraints.

Brownies take the lead in saving Earth’s water.

Girls explore their place in the wide world of girls.

Girls learn they can care for animals and themselves. Daisies learn that leadership blossoms in the garden.

Seniors find out how their leadership can benefit Earth.

Program activity descriptions

How to use this guide Through Girl Scouting, you can do anything! The activities in this guide are designed to help you try new things. Use theses tips and tricks to help you and your troop plan for a year of fun and adventure.

1

Look through the guide on your own, selecting program activities that interest you.

You don’t have to attend all program events with your troop. Many of the events are perfect for you to attend on their own. Highlight or sticky note programs you are interested in, and share these opportunities with your parents or caregivers.

2

Create your plan for the year on your own and with your troop.

You can also find out more about special Girl Scout dates, program ideas and receive additional support by following us on social media.

@girlscoutsIN Join the conversation! @girlscoutsIN

3

Discuss which Girl Scout Journeys and badges you and your troop are interested in earning.

If you are a Girl Scout in grade 5 or above, you may want to create a longer term plan to help you earn higher awards. Use the Ladder of Leadership on page 6, along with your Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting to help you make decisions.

4

Look for program activities that compliment your troop's plan.

If you see a badge icon-like this one-in an activity description, you will earn a badge in this activity. If you don’t see one, that doesn’t mean that you can’t make a connection yourself, and use the skills you learn towards a badge.

5

Create a budget for the year that matches your troop's plan.

Check out page 9 for more information on the Fall Product Sale Program. Use the money you earn to pay for all that you do in Girl Scouting; from fun program activities to paying for your annual membership.

6

Register for fun program activities!

For council-sponsored events, check out page 11 for registration procedures. For community sponsored events, see the event description for details. Register quickly to reserve your spot!

7

Attend the activities you and your troop register for and debrief afterwards.

As a troop or on your own, reflect on your experience, and use your observations to make decisions about future events. Share your photos with us on social media-we love seeing you and your troop participating in fun adventures!

Activities registration procedures Registration closes two weeks prior to each event or when the event is full, unless otherwise noted for all council sponsored activities. Each troop is responsible for providing enough adults to meet Safety-Wise ratios. Girls registering individually should be accompanied by an adult. Only registered Girl Scouts may participate in council activities unless otherwise specified in the program description. At times, the number of adults able to attend will be limited to the Girl Scout Safety-Wise adult-to-girl ratio. Due to limited space, non-Girl Scout siblings/friends (tag-a-longs) are not permitted unless specified by program description.

Register online Visit girlscoutsindiana.org to register for each activity.

From there, you will register on E Council: • Pop-up blockers will prevent the registration form from appearing. Disable your pop-up blocker to register. • Make sure all names and addresses are entered correctly. • Once your registration has been submitted, you will see a pop-up window that tells you your registration has been successfully completed. This means that your registration has been submitted; it does not mean you are automatically accepted for the event. After the placement date, you will receive correspondence from the council indicating whether or not you have been selected to attend. • Confirmations will be sent to email address submitted with event registration.

Register by mail Mail the completed registration form to: Girl Scouts of Central Indiana Attn: Program Registration 7201 Girl Scout Lane Indianapolis, IN 46214

August 8 Registration opens at 9 a.m. Refund policy Cancellations must be received in writing 15 days before event to receive a refund. No refunds will be issued for any purchase less than $5.

Registration policy All participants must be registered in advance. You may register by mail, fax or online. All registrations must be accompanied by payment in full unless otherwise indicated. Registration can be mailed at any time and will be accepted for any event that is not filled to capacity.

program activities What Daisies Do • Grades: K-1 Don’t we all wish we could look at the world through a Girl Scout Daisy’s eyes? Everything they do—from planting a garden to putting on a skit to proudly adding that first petal to their vest—sparkles with that "first time ever" newness! Along the way, they’ll use their Daisy exuberance to help others—and they’ll never forget how that feels. Every Daisy meeting is an adventure filled with giggles, energy and excitement.

Day of the Dead Grades: Family Office Code: 2050

El Dìa de los Muertos – The Day of the Dead - is a traditional Mexican holiday with ancient ties to the Aztecs. Its subject matter may be considered morbid by some cultures, but its celebrants approach The Day of the Dead joyfully. It is viewed as a time when souls of those who have died rejoin their families to rejoice together. Unlike Halloween, this celebration honors the lives of the deceased and celebrates the continuation of life with a belief that death is not the end, but rather the beginning of a new stage in existence. The museum gives visitors a chance to learn about the traditions and history behind El Dìas de los Muertos and to participate in the celebration. Safety guidelines 1. Follow the Safety Activity Checkpoints. Instructions for staying safe while participating in activities are detailed in the Safety Activity Checkpoints. Read the checkpoints, follow them, and share them with other volunteers, parents, and girls (as grade-level appropriate) before engaging in activities with girls. These are found at girlscoutsindiana.org in the volunteer section of our website. 2. Arrange for proper adult supervision of girls. Your group must have at least two unrelated, approved adult volunteers present at all times, plus additional adult volunteers as necessary, depending on the size of the group and the ages and abilities of girls. Adult volunteers must be at least 18 years old and must be screened by the council before volunteering. One lead volunteer in every group must be female. 3. Get parent/guardian permission. When an activity takes place that is outside the normal time and place, advise each parent/guardian of the details of the activity and obtain permission for girls to participate. 4. Report abuse. Sexual advances, improper touching, and sexual activity of any kind with girl members are forbidden. Physical, verbal, and emotional abuse of girls is also forbidden. Report any suspected abuse or neglect to the Indiana Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 800.800.5556, and contact Diana Keely, director of program, at 317.924.6856 to alert the council that you have made the call. Under Indiana law, each citizen of Indiana is considered a “mandated reporter” and State law requires the Department of Child Services to protect the identity of the reporter. 5. Be prepared for emergencies. Work with girls and other adults to establish and practice procedures for emergencies related to weather, fire, lost girls/adults, and site security. Always keep handy a well-stocked first-aid kit, girl health histories, and contact information for girls’ families. 6. Travel safely. When transporting girls to planned Girl Scout field trips and other activities that are outside the normal time and place, every driver must be an approved adult volunteer and have a good driving record, a valid license, and a registered/insured vehicle. Insist that everyone is in a legal seat and wears her seat belt at all times, and adhere to state laws regarding booster seats and requirements for children in rear seats. 7. Ensure safe overnight outings. Prepare girls to be away from home by involving them in planning, so they know what to expect. Avoid having men sleep in the same space as girls and women. During family or parentdaughter overnights, one family unit may sleep in the same sleeping quarters in program areas. When parents are staffing events, daughters should remain in quarters with other girls rather than in staff areas. 8. Role-model the right behavior. Never use illegal drugs. Don’t consume alcohol, smoke, or use foul language in the presence of girls. Do not carry ammunition or firearms in the presence of girls unless given special permission by Girl Scouts of Central Indiana council for group marksmanship activities. 9. Create an emotionally safe space. Adults are responsible for making Girl Scouting a place where girls are as safe emotionally as they are physically. Protect the emotional safety of girls by creating a team agreement and coaching girls to honor it. Agreements typically encourage behaviors like respecting a diversity of feelings and opinions; resolving conflicts constructively; and avoiding physical and verbal bullying, clique behavior, and discrimination. 10. Ensure that no girl is treated differently. Girl Scouts welcome all members, regardless of race, ethnicity, background, disability, family structure, religious beliefs, and socioeconomic status. When scheduling, helping plan, and carrying out activities, carefully consider the needs of all girls involved, including school schedules, family needs, financial constraints, religious holidays, and the accessibility of appropriate transportation and meeting places. 11. Promote online safety. Instruct girls never to put their full names or contact information online, engage in virtual conversation with strangers, or arrange in-person meetings with online contacts. On group websites, publish girls’ first names only and never divulge their contact information. Teach girls the Girl Scout Online Safety Pledge (at www.girlscouts.org/help/Internet_safety_pledge.asp) and have them commit to it. 12. Keep girls safe during money-earning. Girl Scout cookies and other council-sponsored product sales are an integral part of the program. During Girl Scout Product Programs, you are responsible for the safety of girls, money, and products. In addition, a wide variety of organizations, causes, and fundraisers may appeal to Girl Scouts to be their labor force. When representing Girl Scouts, girls cannot participate in money-earning activities that represent partisan politics or that are not Girl Scout–approved product sales and efforts. girlscoutsindiana.org/volunteers

Tools and tips for writing successful nominations Nomination guidelines The nomination should be results oriented, measurable and include real impact stories. GSUSA has designed the guidelines and provided examples on how to write nominations that demonstrate measurable impact. It does not need to be difficult; some simple numbers will do. Some basic questions to ask and answer as nominations are written include How many? What? How? Who? Keep the 3 keys to leadership, Discover, Connect, and Take Action in mind. Here are some examples: • “Brittany has been a leader for several years.” How many years? What kind of leadership qualities does she bring? • "She has retained girls in her troop.” How many girls has she retained? • “Her troop participates in service unit events.” What events specifically? How many events? • “The troop has done many community service projects.” How many projects? What are they? Who have they served? Who benefitted? What need have they met? • “The girls in the troop have benefited from their community service.” How have girls benefited from their service? What skills have they developed? What have they learned?

Mission

Vision Girl Scouts strives to be the premier leadership organization for girls and experts on their growth and development. Goals Each local council sets their own goals based on national goals, initiatives, and direction. Each service unit within Girl Scouts of Central Indiana has annual membership girl recruitment goals which are communicated to the service unit manager and/or service team through the community engagement manager assigned to the service unit. In addition, the service unit manager and/or service team is responsible for setting other additional goals, for example, planning a specific number of events and activities to recruit a specific number of girls. The community engagement manager and/or service unit manager can help you find out the goals. Mission delivery Thriving mission delivery grows and sustains membership through volunteer delivery of the GSLE using the national portfolio. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) The three keys to leadership: girls discover themselves and their values; connect with others; and take action to make the world a better place. At Girl Scouts, everything centers around the girl: activities are girl-led, which gives girls the opportunity to learn by doing in a cooperative learning environment. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting Girls at every grade-level have a Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Through fun activities, girls can earn a variety of badges to build the skills and gain the confidence they’ll use to change the world. They can even develop and complete activities to make their own badge. National Leadership Program through Journeys At the core of the GSLE are national leadership girlscoutsindiana.org/volunteers

Why do you volunteer?

President’s Volunteer Service Award

I volunteer because I had a fabulous leader when I was a kid and all my favorite hobbies come from Girl Scouts....I want to provide that experience now to my troop as their leader and share my scout knowledge with other leaders.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is part of the Points of Light and is a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. As an affiliate of GSUSA your local troop or service unit can register to be a Certifying Organization. Go to presidentialserviceawards.gov to learn more about these awards and how to become a Certifying Organization. Use GSU003 as your ID when registering.
