FOUNDER’S LETTER

California is magnetic. Anyone who lives here can’t imagine living anywhere else. People who visit almost always contemplate the idea of moving west once they experience what this amazing place has to offer. From incredible weather to indescribable landscapes, from the cultural scene that is taking the global stage by storm to technology breakthroughs that are changing the world, there are so many reasons to live here. And that’s not even touching on our obsessions with health and wellness, innovative cuisine and world-class wines. The allure of life in California has drawn many to our shores, including Hedi Slimane, who left the fashion capital of Paris to follow his passion of photography and life on the best coast. When he was put in charge of Saint Laurent a few years back, his decision to move his creative design office to Los Angeles from Paris made waves. The ripples can still be felt throughout the industry including, most recently, when he decided to show his Fall 2016 men’s show and part of his women’s collection at the Hollywood Palladium. C takes you inside said show, one of the hottest tickets in town, for front-row access to the drama (and serious postshow music performances—Beck and Joan Jett!). Another transplant to our shores is this month’s cover girl and part-time Ojai resident Emily Blunt. A fixture on the Hollywood scene since her star turn in The Devil Wears Prada, Blunt has proven time and again that she truly has the acting chops to sustain a long and successful career. We present her in spring’s neutral fluid suiting and prove you can still be a feminine force—even if you are borrowing your style a bit from the boys. And former Armani model Lara Harris has found happiness in the Hollywood Hills, where she and her family call a 1920s retreat, home. The onetime guesthouse of a property belonging to silent film star Rudolph Valentino, the abode has been lovingly preserved by Harris, who first fell for its quintessential California charm more than 23 years ago. Now with warmer temperatures headed our way, it’s time to turn our thoughts to a new wardrobe, including this season’s nautical trend (think stripes in a notso-obvious way). Even if you aren’t bound for a boat, the feeling it inspires might put you in an easy, breezy state of mind. It doesn’t get more California than that.

Gregg Renfrew “My home is such a happy place for me; a private spot in the middle of the city,” says Beautycounter founder Gregg Renfrew, who opened up her family’s Mandeville Canyon residence for “In the Clear,” p.48. “We designed it with family and entertaining in mind—I love that I can see everyone no matter where I am in the house.” The L.A.based beauty maven’s portfolio includes former posts as founder of The Wedding List and CEO of Best & Co. Greg Lotus Photographer Greg Lotus headed to the high desert to capture spring’s maritime looks in “Sun Goddess,” p.122, shot against nothing but “sky and white walls—elements that provide a horizonless aspect to the images. Nautical clothing tends to have strong, bold lines in the design, so I knew immediately I wanted to shoot this with strong graphics and shadow in place,” says the lensman, who splits his time between Manhattan, Paris and Miami. Lotus’ work appears regularly in Vanity Fair, GQ and W Magazine. C SPOTS • A martini at the Sunset Tower Hotel • A weekend at Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur to recharge for the week ahead • Andrew Molera Loop in Big Sur for a hike with spectacular views

C 36 APRIL 2016

Robert Vetica The mod hair inspiration in this issue’s fashion story, “Sun Goddess,” p.122, was “taken directly from the runway,” says celebrity hairstylist Robert Vetica, owner of his namesake salon at the SLS Beverly Hills. “I added vibrant red color, which we did the morning of. Coloring and designing wigs the day of the shoot is always exhilarating!” Vetica recently styled Daisy Ridley on her Star Wars: The Force Awakens global press tour and Cate Blanchett for this year’s Academy Awards. C SPOTS • L’Horizon Palm Springs for some R&R • Bottega Louie restaurant in Downtown L.A. for the best French pastries • Garde shop in L.A. for the most amazing selection of homewares

In search of perfect lightweight day-tonight statement earrings, Rebecca de Ravenel started making pieces herself. “One night, I walked into a restaurant in Beverly Hills after going to a party with a friend and a gentleman having dinner with his wife stood up and said, ‘Oh my goodness, I love your earrings. They look like sweets. What are they called?’” Off the top of her head, de Ravenel, in her French accent quipped: “Les Bonbons.” Et voilà! De Ravenel now produces the

whimsical, silk-wrapped baubles out of India and New York City in a rainbow of colors. Playful yet sophisticated, the earrings reflect de Ravenel’s sought-after taste. The stylist and interior designer, who has worked with Mark D. Sikes, grew up between the Bahamas and Paris (where her parents were antiques dealers) before relocating to Hancock Park last fall. “My fingers are crossed that this is the beginning of lots more to come.” rebeccaderavenel.com. •

ABIGAIL Turin Over a decade ago, Abigail Turin left a posh position at architect David Chipperfield’s London office, returned to her native California (she grew up in Berkeley) and co-founded her own architecture and design firm, Kallos Turin (kallosturin.com). Now dividing time between her family’s main residence in Pacific Heights and a polished beachfront address in Carpinteria, the designer is busy putting her signature style (“rigorous minimalism opposed by a layer of whimsy”) on projects from Montana to Punta del Este, Uruguay. In California’s most CONSIDERED HOMES, everyday FURNISHINGS are transformed into COLLECTIBLE objets d’art No longer restricted to the walls of a room, a cadre of young California designers is creating artistic pieces in a range of domestic mediums. Brian Hurewitz and his wife Mimi Jung (who also constructs large-scale textile weavings) launched furniture design firm BROOK&LYN (brookandlyn .com) in 2009 with a mission to “blend the new and the nostalgic,” says Jung. In addition to minimalist, museum-quality pieces commissioned for Dropbox’s new headquarters, the pair also designed Everlane’s recently opened S.F. studio. From his Glassell Park workbench, Doug McCollough (dmdm.us) is also sought after by the sartorial set—namely outfitting boutiques for Proenza Schouler (his brother is one of the co-founders) and The Line. Beautycounter empress GREGG RENFREW breathes new life into an idyllic Mandeville Canyon HIDEAWAY

Upon relocating from New York to California with her two young children (she has since had a third) for her husband’s finance job, Gregg Renfrew became obsessed with the environmental health movement. Realizing the cosmetics market was polarized by toxic products or “these really earthy, crunchy brands,” she decided to launch a savvy, safe beauty company (with a prescient social selling model) in 2013, banning an unprecedented 1,500-plus harmful ingredients from its products. Today, Beautycounter employs 85 people and bottles everything from sunscreens and lip gloss to a line of baby products, which launched this spring. “I never thought I would live on the West Coast, but I do really believe that Californians are more forward-thinking

C 48 APRIL 2016

than the rest of the country in terms of the environment and food…beauty for me was sort of the last frontier,” Renfrew says. As one of the leading faces of this movement, she reflects a considered, yet contemporary approach to clean living in every aspect of her life—and her family’s new house in Brentwood’s Mandeville Canyon is a prime example. Designed in the 1930s by Gerard Colcord, the newly refinished property was a horse ranch in its former life—you can still see the original stable doors in the outdoor dining room. Renfrew collaborated with Santa Barbara design/build firm Becker Studios and N.Y.-based designer Antony Todd (who was also called upon for Beautycounter office in Santa Monica and the family’s weekend home in Montecito)

That echoes everywhere from the zebra-skin rug and a wall-mounted Turkish kilim to the J.Crew button-down she’s matching with a pair of Chanel slingbacks and chunky gold jewelry. Modern abstract art is juxtaposed with vintage wooden bowls and artifacts from Africa (a nod to her husband’s native Johannesburg) for an eclectic mix, with no theme too overpowering. Is it all foreshadowing an eventual Beautycounter brick-and-mortar? “We’re thinking about it!” she assures. Until then, life and work settle into an enviable balance, and the impossible quest for a clean-living utopia is kept in check: “None of us is perfect, none of us has all the answers, but we do the best we can and I do believe that every choice should be a conscious one.” beautycounter.com. • KELSEY McKINNON

JIMMY CHOO 20th Anniversary Memento Trunk (from $65,000) and Creative Director Sandra Choi.

Sure Footed Since Jimmy Choo’s inception, more than 600 pairs of its A-list-loved shoes have walked the red carpet, covering more than 46.4 miles of step-and-repeat. To celebrate this long journey, Creative

Director Sandra Choi, who has been with the company since her uncle started the brand in 1996, developed Memento, a capsule collection spanning 20 of the house’s iconic shoe and bag styles. Editing two decades of glamour was no easy feat: Choi wanted sparkle (hence the Swarovski-bejeweled Storm), a selection of strappy sandals (her personal favorite is the Tizzy) and simple, classic shapes with a twist (see Romy, a new modern pump), to name a few. And, of course, she had to

include Lance, the brand’s most celebrityrequested shoe, worn by the likes of Jennifer Lawrence and Charlize Theron. “It’s my answer to the 21st-century strappy disco sandal—a shoe that looks elegant and glamorous, but you can dance in it,” says Choi. For the ubercollector, the complete Memento range is available in a handmade galuchat-embossed leather trunk— the ultimate shoe box, if ever there was one. $675-$4,950; 240 N. SOLID & STRIPED The Poppy slit dress in navy gingham, $298.

VENICE

RIGHT at HOME When childhood best friends Cydney Morris and Dallas Wand set out seven years ago to create L.A.-made vintage-inspired line Stone Cold Fox, the pair never dreamed top models like Candice Swanepoel and Miranda Kerr would be snatching up their silky, ultrafeminine threads. Now, the Venice Beach-dwellers have debuted their first brick-and-mortar, tucked away in an Abbot Kinney bungalow. It’s a veritable paradise for the boho set coveting exclusive festival season finds and spring’s romantic green lily-printed pieces and lace-inset dresses. Says Morris, “Stone Cold Fox is such a personal extension of our lifestyle—it grows with us.” 1629 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, 424-744-8677; thestonecoldfox.com.

Beyond the Sea Understated luxe swim line Solid & Striped and “It” Brit Poppy Delevingne are at it once again, this time with a sophomore range of nine ’70s-reminiscent tie bikinis, cutout one-pieces and après swim styles—from a woven chambray cape top to an eyelet robe— all inspired by the model’s recent travels to Corfu, Greece. As for Delevingne’s personal beachside covets: “The navy-and-white wrap one-piece is my favorite. I will top it with the gingham boyfriend shirtdress, inspired by my husband—he was fed up with me stealing his!” solidandstriped.com.

A New BRONZE AGE FENDI returns to RODEO DRIVE with a burnished BOUTIQUE devoted to COLLECTIONS for both men and women Karl Lagerfeld calls his Spring 2016 women’s ready-to-wear collection for Fendi a study in contrasts. The same can be said for the Italian fashion house’s new Beverly Hills flagship. The palette, meant to resemble the hues of Rome’s skyline, includes patinated bronze displays and a grand staircase made of Navona ivory travertine. A wall of 25,000 bronze spikes holds Baguette and Peekaboo bags, all designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi, cocreative director and a third-generation Fendi visionary. Throughout the new space, the materials pay homage to the house’s Roman heritage—it was founded in 1925, in a city rife with bronze sculptures, more than 2,000 fountains, and countless rooftop terraces with views of the horizon— but the design is thoroughly modern and geometric. The colors also subtly hint at the parchment hue, the natural leather tint used for bags and luggage, that be-

FENDI Leather Flowerland Dotcom bag, $3,300, Neiman Marcus, B.H.

came synonymous with Fendi’s chromatic identity as early as 1933. Inside the Rodeo Drive boutique, Lagerfeld’s spring looks, which he describes as “modern in a soft and feminine way with new volumes,” are toughened up by high collars. Venturini Fendi says the bold red or blue chiffons, silk cottons and leathers play against “very dark and natural colors like green and black,” and the stitching on each piece has the look of “very manual craftsmanship.” The pieces hang alongside photographs and archival sketches composed by Lagerfeld throughout his 50-year tenure as house creative director. Venturini Fendi’s accessories hold pride of place on the first floor, including new launches such as the Strap You (a removable leather strap that can be clipped to any bag) and the Dotcom (a structured leather tote with a keyhole opening that reveals a removable pouch of contrasting color sitting inside). Nearby, her Spring 2016 men’s ready-to-wear collection of soft T-shirts, Bermuda shorts, drop-shouldered coats and more—some in papal red— showcase the brand’s casual yet precise allure, an intangible finish that’s seemingly tailor-made for locals, but always informed by the house’s roots. 201 N. Twenty years after first working for designer Tracy Feith’s beloved (and now shuttered) eponymous surf-inspired label, New Yorkbased Winnie Beattie—who owns popular SoHo boutique Warm—has enlisted the West Coast tour de force to design her new dress-centric ready-to-wear line of the same name. “This collection was an ode to coastal California and French beach towns like Biarritz,” says Feith, noting the “light and breezy” floral and striped prints that permeate spring’s inaugural 70-piece range. The L.A.-made closet-pleasers in cotton voile and silk are heavily influenced by ’70s ladies of the canyon Joni Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt, and equally at home at the Hollywood Farmers’ Market or a dinner party in the hills. $500-$2,500; barneys.com.

Thermi procedures are the latest cosmetic innovations to join the fight against aging. Here’s what you need to know: All treatments are either minimally or noninvasive and use heat energy to target collagen and fat cells beneath the skin. • ThermiSmooth combats fine lines on the face and can improve the appearance of cellulite anywhere on the body by using temperature-controlled radiofrequency energy, which stimulates collagen remodeling. Results can last for up to 12 months after three to four sessions. • ThermiTight targets areas where there’s excess fat and loose skin such as under the chin and arms. Inserting a tiny probe, a controlled amount of thermal energy is applied to targeted tissue, essentially melting the fat while tightening the skin. Results improve dramatically over the course of six months. • ThermiVA uses the same radiofrequency energy for vaginal rejuvenation without discomfort or downtime using a special wand applicator, which is applied both externally and internally, to restore and heighten normal tone and function. “This will play an important role in helping many women reclaim their youthful feminine wellness,” says Beverly Hills dermatologist Harold Lancer, M.D. (lancerskincare.com). “Every single patient sees and feels improved results; it’s quite remarkable.” • ThermiRase reduces frown lines; however, unlike Botox, this effect is immediate, nontoxic and lasts anywhere from six to 12 months. After mapping out the nerves that stimulate muscle movement, a small needle-size radiofrequency instrument is injected into the skin and heats up the nerve in several locations, stopping them from working. Once the muscles relax, the worry lines go away. “These results are much better than injections that only last a short amount of time,” says plastic surgeon Z. Paul Lorenc, M.D. (lorenc .com), one of the first doctors in the U.S. to offer all Thermi options. thermi.com.

One of my favorite ways to entertain is the “elevated picnic.” I love the low table placed on a rug using pillows as seats. It’s inviting, cozy and lends itself to an intimate affair. When dining outdoors, I love having family-style bowls and platters to pass around. It also makes meeting new people more fun. I always use candles, of all sizes and colors. Getting the mood lighting right is absolutely key to dining outdoors in style. As for flowers, I suggest several smaller pieces running down the table. I’m obsessed with dusty peachy tones right now! Accent your guest’s name tags with a little floral. It is so sweet and it makes a lovely takeaway at the end of the evening.

Nathan Turner of Nathan Turner Inc. INTERIOR DESIGNER

If your table is in direct sunlight or in a hot, humid area, swap out flowers for something heartier like beach grass or palm fronds. Always have a backup plan like throw blankets on chair backs or space heaters readily available for unexpected temperature drops.

The small details make all the difference—things like place cards and menus are a chance to have fun and be creative implementing your theme. A good host ensures their guests are comfortable at all times. For instance, if it’s dinner on the beach, have a supply of flip-flops available in case a guest shows up in heels. Just like your flowers, your food should represent the party’s environment. Outdoor entertaining is always a little more casual, so choose a menu that reflects that, and definitely have fun with a signature cocktail.

For the outdoor table, I love soft, layered linens—more than traditional table linens. Add a handmade floral bundle from the garden or local flower market as place settings meant to be taken home after. If you’re attending a dinner, don’t forget the host! A thoughtful gift is the perfect way to thank them for what was surely a lot of time and energy put into the gathering (we design many of our gift boxes with this specific gesture in mind!). Always think seasonal. When it comes to food and drink, get inspired by the flavors and ingredients of the season. It just feels right when you’re gathering outside to be enjoying things that feel fresh, bright and local.

True Romance For designers Carly and Matthew Morgan, LOVE and marriage go together like DESIGN and fine ART APRIL 2016 C 85

DESIGN When Carly and Matthew Morgan welcomed their daughter, Cookie, nearly two years ago, it was a call to arms to launch their furniture line, Only Love Is Real. “I was like, ‘It’s time to do what we feel most passionate about, so that our daughter is raised watching her parents do what they love,’” says Carly of the impetus behind embarking on the venture with her husband, Matthew, who previously worked as a sculpture fabricator (Carly’s resume includes jewelry label All for the Mountain and running the Malibu Canyon lifestyle fair Mercado

Sagrado with partner Heather Culp). The Topanga-based couple’s conceptual pieces are crafted with the laws of sacred geometry in mind (“all of the angles in our work are divisible by three,” says Carly) blending mystical philosophy with high-art execution: from Slanted and Enchanted, a triangle-happy walnut étagère, to Old Friends, a fanciful bench featuring sculptural resin cones resembling mountains. “I was inspired by my own experience as a mother, creating magical nurseries and bedrooms for my children, Jack and Sophia,” says Monique Lhuillier of the jumping-off point for her whimsical new Pottery Barn Kids collection. The fashion designer also referenced her personal home decor, as well as her bridal, ready-to-wear and accessories collections, for the range of unabashedly fanciful offerings, which includes a butterfly chandelier that takes cues from a draped beaded necklace, bedding emblazoned with a hand-painted floral pattern, and storybook-perfect tulle bed canopies—all rendered in a calming palette of silk white, blush, gray and mint. There’s even a mural by Los Angeles painter Gabrielle Carey, modeled on an original work on display in Lhuillier’s son’s room. “My life is about living with passion,” she says. “And I design the way I live.” potterybarnkids.com.

REINVENTING THE WHEEL

“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve let go of what’s unimportant,” says ceramic artist Dora de Larios. “Now I’m just following my curiosity and bliss.” At age 82, the Los Angeles native has garnered dozens of public art commissions, created dinnerware for the White House and produced an enormous body of sculptural work influenced by her interest in mythology and her Mexican heritage—yet she has remained relatively below-the-radar. De Larios’ artistic roots go back to her studies at the University of Southern California in the 1950s, under such luminaries as Vivika and Otto Heino and Susan Peterson; her then-marriage to architect Bernard Judge (the couple lived at the Schindler House in West Hollywood); and, the establishment of her first studio in 1957. Working contiguously on elaborate figurative works and minimalistic functional objects, de Larios’ unique oeuvre is finally getting the attention it deserves. Since 2012, the artist, her daughter, Sabrina Judge, and de Larios’ son-in-law, Aaron Glascock, have been creating limited-edition wares for their line, Irving Place Studio, or IPS. Feast of Eden At TAWLA, a Silicon Valley marketing-guru-turnedrestaurateur shines a new light on eastern MEDITERRANEAN cuisine Written and edited by LESLEY McKENZIE APRIL 2016 C 91

MENU Azhar Hashem wants to change the way people think about the Middle East, one bite at a time. As the force behind the Mission District’s incoming Eastern Mediterranean eatery Tawla (named for the Arabic word for both table and backgammon—a game popular throughout the region), the budding restaurateur plans to celebrate flavors and ingredients from Greece, Turkey and the Levant, including her native Jordan.

additional help from culinary-minded family members, Hashem has crafted a thoughtful menu that emphasizes refined, traditionally home-cooked dishes, from tahini-braised meatballs to summer squash blossoms with mint and warm yogurt. She also tapped the mixology team behind hospitality and design firm Bon Vivants to create a wine- and beer-driven

drinks menu, and to hone a wine list that showcases bottles from the region, as well as similar varietals grown in California. Equal parts modern and inviting, the space echoes common decorative elements from the area, such as a coffee-cup installation that climbs up a wall, and a patio that is a nod to the Mediterranean’s alfresco leanings. And thanks to San Francisco’s forward-thinking approach to sophisticated cuisine, as well as the abundance of readily available, locally grown ingredients (not to mention purveyors like Belfiore in East Bay who are handcrafting items including a Syrian cheese for the project), Hashem believes the city is the perfect backdrop for her new venture. “A big part of my inspiration comes from people’s understanding of the region this restaurant represents, and the role food can play in helping them gain a more complete picture,” she adds. “I hope it will cause them to see it in a frame that I helped create.” 206 Valencia St., S.F., 415814-2704; tawlasf.com. •

“Food has a very special role in terms of people of different cultures and backgrounds coming together,” says Hashem, who moved to Massachusetts at the age of 16. “I love feeding people, and seeing the happiness that comes from experiencing something new and awesome while satisfying a basic need,” she says. Though the role of restaurant owner seems to be a natural fit for Hashem, she took a roundabout way of getting there: After earning a degree in computer science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by a liberal arts degree from Wellesley and a business degree from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, she immersed herself in the Bay Area tech scene, including seven years at Google spent marketing new products. “There was a moment where I was thinking about what my next step was going to be and I wanted to do something kind of closer to my heart,” says Hashem, who thrived on her mother’s cooking growing up. But it wasn’t just the launch that had the likes of Jessica Alba, Cher Coulter, Kim Gordon and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley turning out for the celebration. The Galvan team tapped West Coast restaurant sensation Alma, which opened its temporary outpost inside The Standard, Hollywood late last year, to prepare the menu for the evening. “It’s inventive, fresh, delicious and young in spirit,” explains Harrison of chef Ari Taymor’s approach to food, which was evident in a menu of standouts including slowroasted chicken with walnut, pear and chicories, and lettuces with mushroom tartare and brown miso. The artfully arranged plates proved an ideal accessory to the hostess’s ensembles—including Holmgren’s elegant jumpsuit and Harrison’s highcontrast cocktail dress. “It’s one of the perks of designing an evening brand,” says Haas. “You always have the perfect outfit to wear.” alma-la.com. •

Any of the 40 suites at Amangani (aman.com) make a prime setting for a ski getaway in winter and a hiking retreat in summer with natural wood-and-stone interiors that evoke the outdoors. We’re partial to the top-floor Spring Gulch suite for its expansive balcony with panoramic views. If you have more classic tastes, the historic Jenny Lake Lodge (gtlc.com) in Grand Teton National Park is a study in rustic refinement, Old West style—cozy log cabins with handstitched quilts and wood-burning stoves. In our own neck of the woods, there’s some exciting news out of Yosemite: Rush Creek Lodge (rushcreeklodge.com) marks the park’s first resort opening in over a quarter century, offering a contemporary new vantage point for taking in the Giant Sequoias. And while the Ahwahnee Hotel remains as iconic as ever, with a past clientele as varied as Queen Elizabeth II and Leonard Nimoy, the 1920s-era lodge is taking on a new identity (following a legal dispute): In March, it was rechristened the Majestic Yosemite Hotel (travelyosemite.com). Breathing ROOM When former venture capitalist Andy Rappaport and his wife, Deborah, noticed San Francisco’s rising rents and subsequent driving out of artists and galleries, the duo sought to keep the creative class in town. Fueled by their passion for the arts, the business savvy pair launched Minnesota Street Project. Located in the industrial Dogpatch district, the project cleverly generates income to support the concept while also bringing together the many players in the art stratosphere. “We wanted to demystify the art-going experience,” says Deborah, “and create a place where emerging and established artists mingle with collectors and families and academics and novices.” Scouring the city for warehouses, the couple zeroed in on three buildings on Minnesota Street. The first, a 35,000-square-foot space designed

by Mark Jensen of Jensen Architects, now includes skylights, original concrete slab floors and 10 contemporary art galleries, including Casemore Kirkeby. The second building opens in May, offering studio space for 27 permanent artists of many stripes, from photography to video. Nearly 300 artists applied for the reasonable rent-controlled spots. “Artists desperately need affordable spaces and a group studio building is a good way to do that because of economies of scale,” she explains. Finally, a 15,000-square-foot, climatecontrolled storage space for art collectors to house their works generates extra income to offset studio rents and other costs. More plans in the works: a lecture area, restaurant and bar that will open in the fall. What’s next? “First, sleep,” says Deborah. minnesotastreetproject.com. •

“You should see what I’m wearing right now,” confesses Emily Blunt. Just five days ago, the expectant actress stole the show as a presenter at the Oscars, flaunting her new silhouette in a custom blush-colored Prada gown. But today she’s in New York, sitting in bed in flannel pajamas, talking on the phone. “There’s not a piece of Prada on me,” she says with a laugh. These days, Blunt is not only juggling a high-profile career, but her growing family, too. Married to actor John Krasinski since 2010, Blunt, 33, gave birth to their first child, daughter Hazel, in 2014. Now, with the arrival of their second baby on the horizon, Blunt is ready to take a well-earned break from the spotlight in the final months of her pregnancy. “The first pregnancy is the most self-indulgent thing in the world because you get massages and prenatal yoga and hypnotherapy CDs. During this one I forget that I’m even pregnant. I’m

The Left Bank met the left coast in a glam, grunge and bohemian heaven on earth at Hedi Slimane’s presentation of his Fall 2016 men’s collection and Part I of his women’s collection on February 10 at the Hollywood Palladium. It marked the first show the provocateur has staged in Los Angeles since moving here in 2008 and taking over as creative director of the house he renamed Saint Laurent in 2012. Over the years, L.A.’s adopted son has made no secret of his infatuation with L.A.’s streets and beaches, where he’s discovered and photographed so many models, including next-gen celebs Dylan Brosnan (son of Keely Shaye Smith and Pierce Brosnan), Dylan Lee (son of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee), Jack Kilmer (son of Joanne Whalley and Val Kilmer) and Lucia Santina Ribisi (daughter of Giovanni Ribisi). For this momentous occasion, the head of the new-fledged fashion capital was right at home. The show-before-the-show unfolded on the sidewalk, where stars aplenty arrived in sheer lace dresses, sweeping capes, shredded jeans, teddy jackets and tiaras, taking selfies under the marquee where “Saint Laurent” glowed in lights. Inside the storied Streamline Moderne concert hall, a venue that has played host to Frank Sinatra, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and more in its 75year history, the space was thick with rock royalty—all of them Slimane’s muses, too. Justin Bieber hugged a curly-tressed Lady Gaga and met grunge godmother Courtney Love as Grace Coddington looked on. Ex-spouses Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet posed with their genetically blessed daughter Zoë Kravitz and her boyfriend, Twin Shadow. Sam Smith caught up with Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. Mark Ronson and Beck were a matched set in pink tux jackets, and Linda Ramone and J.D. King held court in dueling pilgrim-sized hats. The show also marked the 50th anniversary of the Rive Gauche collection, created by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966. He was the first couturier to launch the modern concept of ready-to-wear and in doing so, set a course toward the democratization of fashion. Casual interpretations of his couture pieces were aimed at younger customers and sold out of his Left Bank store. Slimane has similarly challenged the

establishment by moving his atelier from Paris to L.A., changing the house’s name and logo, and catering to the rock ’n’ roll set instead of to critics. But all anyone was thinking about after the light show signaled the start of the main event was how incredible these clothes looked against the West Coast backdrop, and how toe-tappingly good the soundtrack was (“She’s Gone,” by Montreal band PyPy). Slimane nodded to Rive Gauche by replicating its historic 82-musical-note print on a handful of pieces. But mostly he referenced himself, consolidating his own legacy (for a future label, perhaps?), starting with the first men’s look. The razor-sharp, black tuxedo harked back to the androgynous, slim-line silhouette he pioneered in the early 2000s at Dior, worn with the fedora that Saint Laurent has made a men’s street-style standard in recent years. Other Slimane signatures came fast and furious—leopard-print silk cowboy shirts, fringed tapestry jackets, brass-buttoned officer coats and metallic boots. An amped-up glamour permeated every look, including a beaded “cosmic” tuxedo, and the pièce de résistance, a gold-dipped mink coat. Although it was technically the men’s collection, there were plenty of women’s looks, too—and they were equally arresting, with lightning-bolt, tiger-stripe and python-patterned embroideries. Slimane worked a midi-length silhouette, with velvet capes or strong-shoulder jackets, worn with silk bow blouses, belted culottes or slim skirts, and high boots. The staging was a vast improvement over what he had previously done in Paris: The runway was in the round; models walked with purpose, and ample lighting brought into focus the extraordinary craft. It was Slimane’s most sophisticated collection since taking over the house, presented amid rumors that contract negotiations are at a standstill and he could be leaving. He even took a rare bow. Was it a farewell or a new beginning? The question was still unanswered when he presented his first women’s couture collection at Paris Fashion Week in March. Only time will tell. But as the after-party roared into the night with live performances by Beck, Father John Misty, Joan Jett and more, it was the best example yet of how to stage a major fashion happening in L.A. •

Twenty-three years ago, when Lara Harris was a young model, actress and recent transplant from New York (by way of Paris and her native Chicago), she fell in love with a romantic house in the Hollywood Dell. “It was the guesthouse of the larger home next door, which once belonged to [silent film stars] Rudolph Valentino and Pola Negri, and is really the grand poohbah in the neighborhood,” she says, pointing out of her oversize living room window to the remains of a winding path that connects the two properties, built in 1923. “When I first moved in, I treated it like a crash pad. All of the details, including the wood floors and the plaster details on the walls, were original, and my goal was really just to stay out of the house’s way,” Harris recalls. “Over the years, [interior designer] Schuyler [Samperton] has been helping me figure out how to live here.” Samperton transformed the property from a well-preserved rental into an exquisite family home. “Back in the day, everyone I knew knew Schuyler, and we eventually met when a mutual friend made us co-godmothers of her young daughter,” Harris says. “She’s now one of my oldest friends.” Samperton helped Harris remodel the house gradually, beginning with the kitchen and bathrooms, after Harris bought the rental property in 2000, installing stunning saffroncolored drapes in the dining room, and intuiting her friend’s changing needs. As Harris’ life has shifted over the last two decades, from being a top model for Giorgio Armani to acting to graduate school and now to her career as a practicing therapist, the space has also transitioned from a single woman’s (occasional) party house to a family home. Harris and her husband, Ned Moulton, an investment banker and father of three teenagers, met seven years ago in New York and subsequently made this their full-time residence. “I knew how much Schuyler understood and appreciated my home, and I love how she highlighted the inherent personality of the architecture,” says Harris, referencing the intricate plasterwork throughout the house, a wall that flips to reveal a hidden closet, and the charming original wood floors that are worn down to the nails and

need to be treated with care. “The house is cozy but minimal,” says Samperton, who added Moorish Mediterranean details like custom dining chairs upholstered in Peter Dunham’s Samarkand fabric, and side tables with bone inlay details. “We played with neutrals and textures, like an old leather chair and worn rugs that have personality and soul.” Evidence of Harris’ glamorous history is on view throughout, with framed photographs of her from the likes of famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe propped up against the wall, and portraits by esteemed artists such as David Salle and Billy Sullivan. “I’m always worried I’m veering into Norma Desmond territory,” she jokes, referring to the over-the-top taste of Sunset Boulevard’s fictional character. But the elegant, understated address reads like anything but a museum or an ego palace. “Living in an old house like this is a commitment and a lot of work,” she reflects. “It’s sort of like a relationship. And it’s the longest relationship I’ve ever had.” •

“I knew how much SCHUYLER understood and APPRECIATED my home, and I love how she highlighted the INHERENT PERSONALITY of the ARCHITECTURE.”

LET’S BE BLUNT CONTINUED FROM P.114

“It’s sort of been necessary to both of us to have a confidant who understands your perspective, your position.” And though the two have yet to work together, Blunt doesn’t rule it out. “I think we would prefer it to be something where we’re not married or boyfriend and girlfriend. Our chemistry is not up for public consumption. We’d like to do a play. That would be cool.” Home is wherever work takes them but Blunt definitely feels like she belongs on this side of the pond, where she’s spent the majority of her adulthood (in 2015, she became a dual citizen). Nevertheless, the young family tries to escape to their home in Ojai as often as possible. “It’s really magical and peaceful. It’s certainly a respite from the city,” she says. And when in L.A., she loves strolling down Larchmont Boulevard and having lunch with friends at places like Alcove Cafe & Bakery in Los Feliz. Until Blunt starts filming her next project (at time of press she was rumored to have been in talks to star as Mary Poppins), she’s soaking up every second with her soon-tobe family of four. “It’s quite a juggle with children, especially young children who are now able to vocalize, ‘please don’t go.’ I don’t want to feel torn,” she says. “When people say, ‘what do you want to do next? Who do you want to play next?’ I really absolutely have no idea. I love the surprise element of the job. I love to be surprised, and love to hopefully surprise.” •

Capturing the Golden State of Mind

NANCY REAGAN in the Red Room at the White House dressed for the Inaugural Ball in a gown by California designer James Galanos, January 1981.

C California

First Lady Nancy Reagan was, first and foremost, a great American—but it’s impossible not to think of her as a great Californian as well. She moved to Hollywood in the late 1940s and went under contract to MGM, where they trained her—as they did all of their stars and starlets—in the art of dressing, diction, poise and grace, the public-faced attributes befitting a star. They certainly didn’t need to train her in the manners department. She’d already conquered that in spades. “There’ll be a return of dignity,” Nancy announced as she planned her tenure at the White House, showcasing, among others, California-style gurus including Ted Graber for interiors, Jimmy Galanos for dresses, and David Jones for gardens, flowers, holiday festivals, and tables at her legendary state dinners to which she invited Sinatra, Travolta and Bette Davis. California titans of industry—the “Kitchen Cabinet”—paid a lion’s share of

the bills. The result? A legendary dose of Hollywood glamour for all the world to see. Like Jackie Kennedy’s East Coast chic before her, Nancy Reagan’s West Coast élan defined an era of optimism, prosperity, the triumph of good over evil, and a great America. After one of many lunches I had with her at Hotel Bel-Air— the chopped salad, named for her, and miniature chocolate chip cookies—Nancy and I walked to the car. We paused on the bridge to see the swans, the gardens, and the beautiful light pouring down—one of those Los Angeles moments that even Walt Disney couldn’t have dreamed up. “What a day this is,” said Nancy, taking time, quite literally, to smell the roses—and the lilies, agapanthus, azaleas and tulips in full bloom. Arm-inarm, she looked me in the eye: “How lucky are we to live here?” • ALEX HITZ is an American celebrity chef, cookbook author, socialite, philanthropist and founder of The Beverly Hills Kitchen.
