A first-generation iPod has sold for $29,000 USD via Rally.

According to reports, the 2001 model was still placed in its original sealed packaging and was purchased by the parents of the owner — who was a teenager at the time — as a Christmas gift for $399 USD at an Apple store that had just opened in their hometown of Plano, Texas. “He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with it,” Rally co-founder Rob Petrozzo shared. “So he put it on a shelf and then, inevitably time passes.” The owner came across the historic piece, which was still in the original blue Apple store bag, while cleaning out their house following the death of his father. “It really is a time capsule,” Petrozzo added.

The iPod and was initially sold through an LLC created by Rally in December 2021. The iPod was the LLC’s only asset, and was listed with 5,000 shares sold across 360 investors at $5 USD per share. Earlier this July, a private collector acquired all the shares for $29,000 USD and became the sole owner of the first-gen iPod.

Elsewhere in music, Travis Scott’s UTOPIA debuted at No. 1 on this week’s Billboard 200.
