Honor Blackman, Pussy Galore in ‘Goldfinger,’ Dead at 94

Bond Girl Honor Blackman has died at age 94, The Guardian reports. The actress was well-known for playing Pussy Galore in the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger and for her role as Cathy Gale in the British TV series The Avengers. Blackman died of natural causes not related to the coronavirus.

In her eight-decade long career, Black starred in roles including the goddess Hera in Jason and the Argonauts and Laura West in The Upper Hand, as well as parts in musicals like The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and Cabaret.

In a statement to The Guardian, Blackman’s family confirmed her death. “As well as being a much-adored mother and grandmother, Honor was an actor of hugely prolific creative talent,” they shared. “With an extraordinary combination of beauty, brains and physical prowess, along with her unique voice and a dedicated work ethic, she achieved an unparalleled iconic status in the world of film and entertainment and with absolute commitment to her craft and total professionalism in all her endeavours she contributed to some of the great films and theatre productions of our times.”

More recently, Blackman was performing as herself in her show Honor Blackman, which her family described as a reflection on “her astonishing life, her beginnings, her family, and her rise to stardom with her usual sense of humour and perspective.” She also appeared in contemporary films Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), Color Me Kubrick (2005) and Cockneys vs. Zombies (2012).

Blackman, who was born in London in 1925, began acting after studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She got her first roles after completing her studies there, and her breakthrough role came with 1962’s The Avengers. Blackman learned judo for the role and even wrote a book about martial arts, “Honor Blackman’s Book of Self-Defence.” Her talents helped land her the role of Pussy Galore in Goldfinger in 1964.

Blackman was married twice. Her second husband was actor Maurice Kaufmann, died in 1997. She is survived by their two adopted children, Lottie and Barnaby, and grandchildren Daisy, Oscar, Olive and Toby.
