The list doesn’t end there – Quake II also features enhanced models, restored AI behaviors, enhanced cinematics, improved effects, and both single-player expansions – Mission Pack: The Reckoning and Mission Pack: Ground Zero. The enhanced Quake II also includes Call of the Machine, an all-new expansion for Quake II from the team at MachineGames. Even once-lost assets from the game’s original development have been resurrected, with animations once left on the cutting room floor polished up and added to the game.

A blast(er) from the past

Savvy PlayStation historians may recall Quake II’s first foray into consoles, the 1999 port released for the original PlayStation console. Built to accommodate console hardware at the time, the 1999 release of Quake II introduced id Software’s trademark FPS combat to many PlayStation fans and even included novel features like support for the official PlayStation Mouse peripheral.

24 years later, Quake II’s enhanced release on modern platforms brings the original and complete Quake II experience, enhanced for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in collaboration between id Software and the extremely talented team at Nightdive Studios. While the 1999 version port holds a dear place in our hearts, this enhanced release reintroduces Quake II with a wealth of improvements taking advantage of modern PlayStation hardware.

Enhanced on modern platforms

Experience updated graphics supporting 60 frames per second and 1080p resolution on PlayStation 4, with up to 4K resolution enabled on PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation 5 systems. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players can also enable gyroscopic controls for Quake II via SixAxis support, allowing for motion aiming to augment the control sticks during gameplay. PlayStation 5 owners can also witness eye-searing gameplay speeds up to 120 FPS on supported displays.

The enhanced Quake II brings old-school gameplay powered by present-day tech.

Play co-op and multiplayer

Quake II’s legacy isn’t just its pulse-pounding single-player campaign: For those who have landed a rocket jump or two in their day, Quake multiplayer is a way of life.

Fight united against the Strogg in 4-player online or local split-screen co-op, then take things to the arena and settle scores in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch or Capture the Flag modes with up to 16 combatants (plus bot support for both Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch). Play with or against friends on a variety of platforms with crossplay support, and see for yourself how Quake II’s multiplayer defined the era.
