Sylvie Van Der Vaart Video: Watch Footballer's Wife Show Off Her Skills

0 of 10

Have you ever found yourself wondering whether footballers' wives are as good at football as they are?

I actually wouldn't be surprised at all if you haven't. After all, if you're like me, that means you're content to just marvel at the ridiculous beauty all of them seem to share.

Nevertheless, Sylvie Van Der Vaart, the beloved wife of Dutch footballer Rafael van der Vaart, got a chance to show off her impressive football skills in a recent video. As it turned out, she was good enough to merit a full-blown slideshow.

So without further adieu, meet the lovely Sylvie Van Der Vaart.

Roots and Beginnings

We'll get to the video of Mrs. van der Vaart's mad skills in a second.

For now, how about a proper introduction?

Like most other football wives, Sylvie made a name for herself as a model. And like most other models, she got into modeling when she was a mere 18 years of age.

If you're curious as to how exactly she got noticed, I would like to direct your eyes to the attached picture.

Television!

It didn't take long for Sylvie to find her way into television, where she got her start on stations like FoxKids and TMF, a music station. It was through TMF that she gained notoriety by interviewing the likes of Britney Spears and Australian singe Kylie Minogue.

As you will see in the ensuing slide, a background such as this means one can't be camera shy.

Mad Skills

At long last, it is time to deliver on our promise.

It's a little grainy, but the woman in the video is indeed Mrs. Van der Vaart. As you will see she's pretty nifty with a football (or "soccer ball" if you're not into the whole international thing).

Some people on Youtube are suggesting that this video is a fake, and that the ball is actually CGI. I don't know about you, but the fact that these people are taking the time to comment on a Youtube video suggests that they can't hope to duplicate her talents, and thus have no idea what the hell they're talking about.

In other words, it's awesome, and those who would kill the buzz should be shunned forever.

Along Came Rafael

Sylvie was recognized as the Netherlands' Sexiest Female in 2003. Coincidentally, she hooked up with Rafael van der Vaart, then of AFC Ajax, that same year.

Naturally, it didn't take long for them to become the premiere couple in all the Netherlands, and one of the most famous football couples in Europe.

And let's face it, bums like you and I would kill for distinctions like those. Unless of course the person reading this is a footballer with an insanely hot wife or girlfriend, in which case it's just me.

Wedding Bells

5 of 10

You know you're famous when your wedding is broadcast live on national television.

Such was the case with Sylvie and Rafael's wedding in June of 2005, and quite a few people around the Netherlands tuned in as well.

To put things in perspective, can you remember the last time an American athlete's wedding was broadcast live?

    Neither do I.

To Germany!

The Van der Vaart's also ended up moving to Germany in 2005 when Rafael went to play for Hamburger SV of the German Bundesliga league.

The move caught many surprise, as many expected him to sign with a big-name club like AC Milan. Regardless, Rafael ended the season as the team's top scorer.

The move worked out for Sylvie as well, as her star caught on in Germany as well, and she is still highly-regarded there to date. My sources tell me that being famous in Germany is awesome, so good for her.

To Spain!

In the summer of 2006, the Van der Vaart's welcome their first child into the world, as Sylvie gave birth to Damián Rafael in May.

In 2008, after a couple seasons in Hamburg, the van der Vaart's were on the move again, as Rafael was transferred to Real Madrid. He was nominated for the Ballon d'Or later that year.

For the record, Ballon d'Or is Euro-talk for "super awesome footballer."

The New Beckhams?

8 of 10

Through all the traveling and changing of addresses, the press liked to refer to the Van de Vaart's as the "new Beckhams."

First of all, if you don't get the reference, do me a favor and hit yourself with a stick?

If you do get it, however, you might be wondering if being likened to David and Victoria Beckham is a good thing. I'm not so sure myself, but then again I'm the reclusive type.

2009: Not The Best Of Times

In June of 2009, Sylvie announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and that she had undergone Surgery the previous month.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid wanted to sell Rafael, but he refused to budge because Sylvie was undergoing cancer treatment in Madrid. Good man.

Sylvie was eventually declared cancer-free, and Rafael transferred to Tottenham Hotspur of the EPL in 2010.

Other Activities

That about gets you caught up on the Van der Vaart magical mystery tour, as Rafael is still playing for Tottenham. He also had a hand in the Netherlands' run to the final in the 2010 World Cup, which was fun while it lasted.

As for Sylvie, we should not that she's had various television obligations in recent years. She's been a judge on Das Supertalent, the German equivalent of Got Talent. This past year, she finished as the runner-up in Let's Dance, the German Dancing With The Stars.

These days, it would appear that her next frontier could very well be the internet, as that video could very well go viral. That will also be fun.
