The owner of this amp chose to have his level controls bypassed, to keep the signal path as clean as possible.
I like big numbers!
The speaker terminals shown are not original. Vintage amplifiers often come equipped with binding posts that will only accept a small-gauge wire (about 16 AWG). The SPEC-2 is one of those amps, so the original binding posts were swapped with posts that will accept a much thicker wire.
The SPEC-2 uses six output transistors per channel; 3 paralleled NPN devices and 3 paralleled PNP devices. Several of them are visible in the photograph above (mounted on the aluminum-coloured heatsinks near the back panel of the amplifier).
Some amps that have four main power supply filter capacitors have an independent power supply for both the left and right channels; some don't. The SPEC-2 doesn't. Instead, it uses 2 x 15000 uF in parallel for both the positive and negative supply, respectively, for a total of 30000 uF per polarity. That's 60000 uF total. That's alot of storage! Independent power supplies are not the be-all and end-all; we've heard exceptional amplifiers with both shared and independent power supplies.
Pioneer has manufactured a plethora of audio components: power amplifiers, integrated amplifiers, preamplifiers, receivers, tuners, CD players, tape players, turntables, equalizers, loudspeakers, and more! Like other audio companies, Pioneer's golden era was arguably the 1970's, and Pioneer components from the 70's are very popular with audiophiles and collectors.

The Pioneer SPEC-2 power amp. At 250 watts per channel, to the best of my knowledge, the SPEC-2 is the most powerful stereo basic power amplifier Pioneer ever produced. You can check out more of the SPEC's specs here.
It is not, however, the most powerful hi-fi component Pioneer ever made. The Pioneer SX-1980 receiver eclipses the SPEC-2 by a small amount.
The SPEC-2 is a solid, robust-sounding, audiophile-grade amp. I doubt anyone ever regretted purchasing one.
